It feels like everyone is so far ahead of me that we’re playing different games.

I think the only boss in the initial bit of Limgrave I’ve not done is the tree sentinel. I’m not looking for tips, just wondering if people fought him on foot or horseback? The former feels like I’m at a distinct disadvantage but the horseback combat is quite hit and run and tedious. I feel like I’m doing it wrong in both instances.

I fought it on foot but I was quite levelled up by that point. But yeah definitely agree with you about the horse combat, hit and running like that over and over does get a little stale. Practicing it on foot was more fun for me definitely. You can just keep popping back every few levels / weapon upgrades until it feels like the difficulty is right for you.

Thanks. I think I might give it a go on foot again this evening.

I’ve still not found a mage to teach me magic, either, despite playing for 8 hours. I can’t seem to find one in the Roundtable Hold. Just that kumbaya mf who wants to teach me hymns and that.

I’m at a Castle in Caelid. It’s the boss from Morne Castle + Crucible Knight. I can get the other boss out of there pretty quickly but one or two good hits from either of them and I’m dead.

What I’m finding weird is I’m barely doing any damage to Crucible Knight even 2 handing the upgraded Greatsword. Got 2 Talisman slots and switched to using one to recover Stamina and one that boosts attacks. May as well be using a butter knife. Is there some kind of stat or attribute that I should be looking at? Maybe I need something with Piercing or add something to enhance the sword I’m using?

I’ve beaten the one in the Gaol and another out in the world which had some different moves. They were both cool battles but no problem to take down.

That fight is optional. I only found this out after I did it. The way it comes optional is brilliant.

If you want to kill them, then I think you really need to try and kill the misbegotten warrior before crucible knight joins.

I was able to do it with a Claymore, it staggered the misbegotten warrior so it was quite easy to stunlock.

For the crucible knight, I was able to dodge almost everything fairly consistently, except the short range tail spin in his second phase. I just gave up trying to dodge it in the end and just took the beats!

The Night and Flame sword is hilarious, picked it up and thought it sounded cool so ended up respecing to use it.

In the boss fight at

Spoiler

Aziura Heros Grave I was able to take out the two Crucible Knights by giving myself some space in the arena and just firing the sword off.  Still dangerous as they close in quick and there's a wind up but the damage it caused was hilarious

People say this every time a new From game comes out. I’ve used my ash summons a few times when I couldn’t be bothered to persevere without them, but I’m in the last few areas and I’ve not encountered anything that couldn’t have been handled alone with a bit of effort. It’s exactly the same as the other games, it’s balanced for one player and everything else is there to alleviate the challenge. There’s never been a From boss that was “designed” to be fought with help.

Yeah having missed the jellyfish early on I was absolutely baffled by the love for it. I dumped some flowers into it when I eventually got it to get it to +6 and it’s rubbish. But I’ve got three that I like for different reasons, so I guess people just get used to it and like it. I have one that’s got a good number of buddies who spread out, one single one that actually does a lot of damage, and one that is just incredibly cute and I love it despite it being a bit useless.

My Jellyfish poisoned Margit at level 2 I think, and it was the poison that finished him off. Similarly it allowed me to cheese the Red Dog with arrows while it was being used as a chew toy. Whatever works!

There are so many ways to skin the cats in this game I don’t know why anyone would just bang their head against a wall trying to do things the “right” way. I watched Limmy kill the Crucible Knight in Evergaol with a series of perfect parries using the buckler. And last night I killed him using the Zweihander’s Stomp and Uppercut, plus whatever buffs I had to hand:

Very scruffy fight, but I’d spent ages trying to learn his moves and dodge roll, so when I found that the L2 weapon art makes him miss me (most of the time, and especially on a slope) I grabbed the win.

Tonight I shall be either tanking magic damage in a Four Kings style DPS race, or cheesing Rennala with arrows. Or using any other means at my disposal. What I won’t be doing is endlessly whinging about “Poor Design” because I’m too stubborn to try the various tools on offer to me. ;)

Strong disagree.

They're all doable solo of course but I've always felt From has had co-op firmly in mind when designing many of them.

I’ve never fought a single Fromsoft boss in co-op.

I think you’re both kinda right though. I think they have the option of co-op in mind when designing it, but I think the base level is “We’re making this so you can do it on your own, but here’s a load of other options if you find that too hard”

I think O&S in Dark Souls were designed for coop.

Obviously you can do them solo, but I think the point of them - the big design idea behind the two guys attacking you at once - is to hammer home how hard it will be to defeat a boss when there's a second boss you can't focus on, which is alleviated when there's a second player (or NPC) distracting the other boss for you.  The Gargoyles on a smaller scale too, I guess.

O&S are like a showcase for the idea of how much easier this fight would be if you had someone else in the room on your side.

Respecced last night, was using a Faith build with the Blasphemous Blade, but I was only really using 1 spell, and that spell scales much better with a different seal.  Made sense to change my stats towards that

Lets see if I made the right choice with the next boss I face, but early testing seems to bode well

Now to find this hard bitch everyone is talking about

Yeah - I think the reason so many bosses have AoE attacks is to make it so it's never a pushover simply to gang up and bully them to death. Watch co-op fights and you will see it's usually the case that if one player gets knocked down by a big hit, all of the players around the boss will do, too.

I completely agree with this - I think they are intended to make you engage with the summoning mechanic, at least on a first play through.

Pretty happy with my gear and stats now, think I’ll probably be good to go through the last section or two. Fantastic game.

You should swap those Vigor and Endurance stats around.

I don't normally pump HP in Souls games, and as long as i can't get 1-shot i'm happy. But the enemies in the late game areas of Elden Ring, hit like a fucking truck! So needs must.

by the sounds of it, you're approaching it from clearing up an area before moving on... I'm at the academy now but I've just been hoofing it past big baddies

Huge.

Any downside at all to this?  (aside from I'd feel bad as they mostly seem quite chill)

To come back to this, i have killed a bunch of them, and  checked the absolution place, and it says i dont need absolution...so...no! it would appear!

Some of them hit back pretty hard though! lol

SO, Kill the nomadic travellers, take the bell to round table, dont have to bother travelling around to find them!

HP is needed for sure, I have 10 levels left to hit the 150 assumed Meta, at least 5 of those are going into HP

I have poked around various other areas, particularly the Weeping Peninsula, and completed Castle Morne, but I'm trying to get the most out of Limgrave before moving on, as it feels like a bit of a tutorial area and the other two areas I've been to - the Lakes and that red and barren place (the one where I posted a vid of an NPC being killed by a giant dog) are a bit scary. Well, the lakes aren't scary, but felt a bit more unsafe than Limgrave so I'm just pootling around and enjoying Limgrave before going off to learn a new area which will probably require lots of horrible deaths.

But I'm about level 24 now, so thinking about giving that wet hen, Magrat Garlick a good kicking.

one of the things I enjoy is going places where I think I might not be powerful enough and bolting past enemies to unlock the map - quite often you'll stumble across some awesome loot, and you'll find graces along the way.  There's no disadvantage to just pushing your luck other than losing runes which you can easily get back.  It only becomes proper tense when you're in a 'dungeon' level like the castle where it's much more like old school Dark Souls.  There's plenty of ace stuff even in the weeping peninsula, and if you've *properly* explored it, you'll have ended WELL out of the way on the map!
