Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

I think that guy I was stuck on before can be beat with a bit of luck. I keep accidentally bringing the messages up on screen in the middle of mad combat and its distracted me a fair few times, I managed to get him down to a quarter health with just 1 flask used and then I opened the message screen up and it broke my attention as I tried to fumble to get rid. I'm giving him a pass for now but I'm a lot better than I was earlier today!

TLDR:

As you were… nothing to see here.

Though Bell bearing carry over to NG+ is appreciated.

I have heard that they’ve removed the money bird in Mohgwyn Palace and that the small ledge to do the infinite drop for rune gain has been also removed.

Also Rivers of Blood has been nerfed apparently.

I’m pretty sure that’s unconfirmed and you’re safe for now until people carry on testing.

Some other takes from this:

Moon Light Greatsword R2 special tracking is fixed, so an enemy that isn’t like a hairswidth lower than you would’ve escaped unscatched, and you can now safely use the skill on an incline now.

Ice Spear nerf so it doesn’t bypass shields is quite big for PvP… so Fingerprint Shield got a buff then.

Had another bash at Mogwyn last night, probably the easiest of my boss roadblocks (bearing in mind I'm fighting without summons). Looking for some more advice on what I could do to up my melee damage as that's the main factor in having to survive for so long. I can get him to phase 2 with about 6 or 7 health flasks but it takes a while - and his attacks do big damage in phase 2 so its easy to burn through the flasks. Increasing my DPS will help me finish the fight faster.

I'm level 134 with these stats. According to online, this boss should be do-able at level 120-140, however presumably that's with summons.

Spoiler

Vigor - 40

Mind - 21

Endurance - 19

Strength - 17

Dexterity - 47

Intelligence - 9

Faith - 45 (50 with talisman)

Arcane - 15

Currently my most damaging weapons are, in order:

Spoiler

Treespear +25   (Str D, Dex C, Fai D) - holy weapon

Winged Scythe +9   (Str D, Dex C, Fai C) - holy weapon but causes bleed even on Mogwyn after a while

Vyke's War Spear +9  (Str D, Dex B, Fai C) - fire weapon

Guardian's Swordspear +24  (Str E, Dex B, Int D) - I use cold ashes on this to cause frostbite

As suggested here I've started using Golden Vow and experimenting with Darkflame blade and Dragonbolt blessing to increase DPS but if there is an improvement its very minor. I have Flame give me Strength but that only affects fire DPS as far as I can tell. Should I stick with these incantations or are there any others I could try for melee boost?

As for Talismans I should have most of them up to this point in the game. Currently I'm using the Faith +5 one, weight lowering, robustness boost (to help with blood loss) and stamina boost. I could use a Dex +5 talisman to increase output a little, or Lord of Blood's Exultation which increases with blood loss in vicinity. However I don't know if the effect only triggers if you suffer a HP loss from the bloodloss.

I have runes I can use to level up (or I can farm). I can respec if necessary - for example putting more points into Faith or Dex (all my weapons are Faith/Dex based). I don't really want to have to though if I can optimise using equipment/incantations instead, unless you think my stats are too wonky for these endgame bosses.

The last resort is using spirit ashes but I'm keen to try and do these last bosses solo if possible. If that means having to level up more to compensate, so be it.

Thanks for any pointers, build wizards!

You have a decent amount of Faith so I'd suggest:

Seal: Gravelstone Seal +25

Incantation: Ancient Dragon's Lightning Strike

Talismans: Lightning Scorpion Charm, Flock's Canvas Talisman, Godfrey Icon, Winged Sword Insignia

Physick: Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear/Spiked Cracked Tear

Neck the physick before going in, use Mohg's Shackle to get up close and a full charge of lightning strike should melt him.

Thanks guys. What tear @Alask? If you mean the psychik ones I should have them all by now.

Yes I have the shackle and have been using it to get to phase 2 faster. I did a rejig before I saw these posts and have been making better progress. I put on the +Faith and +Dex talismans along with the Lord of Blood Exultation, and the resist blood loss talisman (+1). Been popping Golden Vow and using the Guardian's swordspear with frost. I am doing a bit more damage now, as well as decent amount of damage when frostbite procs, and am getting to phase 2 much faster which is helping me learn the attack patterns. Got him down to 1/3rd HP just now, so I think I might be able to do it. If I still struggle I will try out a lightning focused build as suggested, cheers!

I had to go google it because I can't remember what it's called. Purifying Crystal Tear is the one, it's stops one of his curses from doing shed loads of damage to you when it's triggered.

I was able to kill him before phase 2 really gets going. Get his damage down by about a quarter, use the shackle and then unleash everything you can at him, including as he goes into the transition to phase 2, and don't stop attacking whilst he's inflicting the AOE damage on you. It then comes down to who melts first!

I have now watched a half hour video from vaati explaining the plot. It's almost like he played a different game! I must have paid zero attention to the story details. I like how he ended his video saying it was Froms best story, and I'm sat there thinking I couldn't even follow his video.

Am thoroughly enjoying using the Starscourge Greatsword’s gravity roar skill to flush out ambushers. It’s also just very amusing to periodically do a big shout, especially when I call in my mimic buddy and we’re both running around a boss going RRRRRRAAAAARRRRRRRR.

This has been my NG+ sword almost all the way through. Love it.

Just wanted to try something different than a sword really, as I used a katana all the way through NG. But swords are just so much fun in this.

Got Mogwyn solo in the end, woop! Although it took about 4 hours of extra play tonight. Thank god for Youtube keeping me company whilst I toiled. I'll post a video at some point. Then decided to give Maliketh a go, high on my victory - and got absolutely destroyed in phase 2 multiple times. I've been trying to use the special parry but think I'm going to have to give up on that, the timing is too tight and its also unclear which moves you can use it on. Its a bit disheartening that it takes a while to get to phase 2 and then you pretty much insta-die after an attack phase or two, even with all the optimisations and now being level 140 since Mogwyn's fall. This might be the boss that makes me use spirit ashes, we'll see.

Had a quick go on Malenia as well. I'm pretty much fine and can get her to half HP until she does the move of doom, which looks like you might be able to roll survive (with a lot of HP damage) if you time the rolls in each flurry perfectly. Next boss will probably have to be the dragon then, and I can spend the runes from that on a few more level ups for Maliketh. Its a bit disheartening to look online and see the suggested level for him is as low as 90-120 depending on where you look, but it seems like spirit ashes take a lot of the heat in phase 2, so solo is a different affair. I also saw a lot of people calling Maliketh bullshit and impossible, but tis always the way with From games. Did anyone here do him without ashes?

In some downtime I was warping around random places and found a new small secret in Nekron, just goes to show its worth revisiting places from time to time, you never know what you might have missed!

Progress!

Downed both these guys today (endgame spoilers):

Spoiler

Dragon Plaxidusax at the base of the Farum ruins. This turned out to be much easier than expected, with the extra HP and damage resistance items I had equipped it only took a few tries. I was no longer getting one-shot by the fire attacks and that's all I needed to get through. An endurance test to be sure but patience and rolling through the evil swipes and dives were enough to succeed. The final phase where he starts teleporting randomly around was a bitch though, a few times I died just because you have no idea where he's porting in from and it breaks your lock on (which weirdly does work when he's teleporting after his dive attack). 200k runes in the bank, put an extra level into Faith and Dex. I also decided to max out my flasks for the task ahead, something I'd been holding off on but thought now or never!

And then down went Maliketh! I wasn't expecting to beat him so soon. It still took a few hours. I could reliably get to phase 2 by this point and had been experimenting with the best weapon/ashes combos to get the job done. This gave me a bit of time to practice in phase 2 and learn some of the evil attack patterns. Crucially though I learned the timings for dodging the most fatal combos. To begin with I was using my guardian spear with frost, but finally found out that equipping the spear with blood ashes with Seppiku (stab self to get increased bleed) was getting me to phase 2 faster. I gave up on the deflect item completely and just focused on evasion, playing quite aggressively to get in extra hits when he was on the ground. I was able to get him to maybe 1/5th health before I would mess up a timing (usually the downward dive followed by the delayed explosion) and get one-shot.

In my final winning run, I got very lucky. Due to my agressive play I actually managed to stagger him in phase 2 and get the crit in, causing a little extra damage. But in the next few hits I procced bleed on him (which I'd never managed in phase 2), and that took away the last bit of health leaving him with a sliver remaining. I went all in and managed to get lucky and get the last few hits in before dying. Phew! Levelled up a few more times and now I'm about level 143 with a few more points in Dex and Vigor 41.

Now I'm out on the ashes at Leyndell, how cool! Which begs the question (don't tell me) whether the Erdtree has burned before seeing as how half of it was covered in ashes earlier. One thing I missed in Leyndell pre-burial was a holy statue near the end of the city that had a cryptic game message on the ground in front of it. I guessed I needed a special emote to use but never found it. Anyone know what I missed there? Now its buried.

So aside from whatever is next, as far as I know for optional major content, all that's left is Malenia and the bloody Erdtree Guardian with the 2 knights in Haligtree guarding the door after the battlements.

Is the point of no return very telegraphed? Is it just a case of beating the Erdtree beast or whatever it is (haven't reached it yet but have seen the name online) or once I discover the final boss fight should I stop and mop up any loose ends?

The statue is part of Corhyn's quest if you want his ending. You would have needed a specific high level Incantation to activate it

Spoiler

After you beat EB, you are transported back to where you fought redacted. There will be a SoG. Rest here before you do anything. Don't touch/examine anything except the SoG otherwise you'll trigger one of the endings. You can ignore the actual final part and teleport back out to the world to clear up any loose ends but if you don't rest or at least activate the SoG, you can't teleport back to complete the game (this may have been fixed in a patch but I can't confirm)

After the ending you can also choose to jump into NG+ or go back out into the world

Thanks.

Spoiler

I don't think I know who Corhyn is so that's a bummer, guess its another NPC quest line I completely missed.

Also does anyone know if there is a way for me to get to the isolated Divine Tower now that Leyndell is in ashes? The teleport to it was via the side route past the mansion, but that's all blocked now. I have Moghs divine rune but now can't unlock it!

@Alan Stock Re: Statue. You need the Law of Regression incantation which needs 37 INT for some bizarre reason. When you're a faith build doing the faith questline, it's a bit of a 'fuck you'. Anyway, just watch this if you want to know what happens - https://youtu.be/9kpSyn5AE7g?t=617

And yeah, you can mop up after the final boss, you're not locked into the ending. It's a very similar setup to Sekiro.

Edit: You can warp to the Divine Bridge site of grace to get where you want...

He's the Faith Incantation merchant that you initially meet in Roundtable Hold. He then moves to various locations trying to track down Goldmask. The statue is pretty much the end of his quest

Now I'm nearly at the end, can someone tell me if I've missed a bit of Ranni's quest?

Spoiler

The next thing to do seems to be to get through a seal in the underground, after the star worm boss. But I need a ring or something for that which I don't have yet. Have I missed it somewhere or is it still to come? Currently I'm at (the real) Godfrey.

If you've beaten the Baleful Shadow in Nokstella, you'll have a key that opens a previously locked chest...

Location

Spoiler

The one in Lucaria next to Rennala

As above, but also

Spoiler

Go to the bonfire a little earlier on and you'll get an option to talk to something. You need to talk multiple times for the dialogue to progress. After doing this what's posted above is the next step
