Also - I LOVE how 'hidden' things are, like cave entrances and the like.  You'll just be mooching, and as you chase down an opponent, you realise something that didnt even look like ANYTHING from a distance is actually a gap in the mountain.  Magnificent.

Popped in to say exactly this. Found a cave not far from the start:

Spoiler

Just a grotto, with a tiny entrance that I could easily have missed, containing some wolves. Killed them, and then found a fog door. Some sort of a Beastman boss with moves like Orphan of Kos! Super aggressive but a small health bar, so he went down

So far I’m finding lots of Bloodborne similarities in the enemy design, but also in things like the visceral attacks you can do:

Spoiler

Discovered this on a beach past a giant (who I eventually killed - again, reminded me of the Church Giants). There are some hideous octopus balls there with large health bars. Got behind one, hit it with charged attacks, and noticed it staggered, with a big fountain of gold spewing out of its face. BAM! Visceral attack ftw!

This all pleases me greatly. It’s like Dark Souls and Bloodborne mashed with BotW.

Oh, and I’m dying so much. That fucking Golden Horse dude, what a cuuuuuu…..

Got cocky killing all the weak trash overworld then got my arse handed to me in a catacomb boss fight. Stepped through the fog with 5000 runes like it ain't no thing. Mistakes were made.

Don't be deceived by the many easy kills, this is still a bastard.

The open world/exploring parts of this are fantastic, and so much fun. And the little spots of Dark Souls-esque more closed off design areas are also brilliant.

But my God the bosses are frustrating. I am sure they are way harder than they have ever been in any of the games? I managed to SL1 both Dark Souls 1 and 3, so I am pretty good... But I must have had about 50 attempts on what I think is the first main boss (Margit), and I dont seem to be getting anywhere. The only weapon I have is a crappy battle axe +2 which is barely scratching him. I can pretty much do his first phase without getting hit, but phase 2 seems overly punishing. Has anyone got any tips?

If it's true that you can take your save from PS4 to PS5 then I may opt for the PS4 version for the stable framerate and hope the PS5 is fixed/better at some point in the future.

Lots of websites reported that was the case based on the Japanese FAQ

Another "wait a few months for patches" AAA game.

Lovely.

What's the chances they fix the performance issues soon? I would rather hang off than play a hitching mess.

Well, being brutally honest, I can't think of a From game that got patched up into a significantly better technical state after release. Generally, what you see on launch is what you get. Technically, at least. No doubt there will be some balance patches down the road.

I can’t think of a single instance of a From game’s performance being improved after launch other than them allowing you to cap framerate or by a Pro or next gen console being released.

So just hang on for the Series XX and you should be golden.

If people bombard the BandaiNamco Twitter enough they will look into it. I  assume it's getting massacred on Steam and some 'moderation' is taking place.

The obvious scapegoat for the stuttering is this Easy Anti Cheat stuff. Maybe the cracked version of the game will reveal what's going on.

Jump attacks, charge R2s  you need to break their posture.  I only know this from a network test vid I listened to last year :)

So tempted to get this.  Hated Demon Souls.  Bloodborne was much better, but still too difficult for me.  Got about two thirds of the way through and lost interest. Is this going to convert me? The premise sounds amazing.  But I think I know the answer to this already, sadly.

Honestly, I would say no. The first main boss is harder than almost anything in any of the other games, IMO. Exploring is a lot more fun, and much easier than in the other games.

There's such a huge overworld etc with so much to fight and explore without getting caught in a death loop when retrieving your runes, and although opponents can be a challenge they've deffo been designed for people to farm. So unlike previous games you can farm and spec up but not in a fairly limited way, you can explore massively and farm. You're never going to be bored spec'ing up in this, unlike how some people could become in previous, more linear Soul's games.

You can enjoy low level play for days I'd imagine. Just exploring the fantastic world without ever having to fight a boss, if you don't go through any fog gates that is. You ever get killed overworld etc just make sure to make a beeline for your runes and then avoid what killed you and take another route to pootle on.

This choice is deffo what From was alluding to at the game being more accessible, you can just farm and spec up in a massively more interesting, varied and free way.

It's such a fucking stunner. I'm truly in love with it.

The slightly anxious but excited look on his face is exactly the same as mine today as I look for the postman.

Do what I am doing and watch Lamb as a distraction!

Doing so has taught me that the Icelandic for Lamb looks a lot like (You) Died:

I mean…I’ve only played for three hours, granted, but in that time I’ve seen rain storms, wind storms, lighting storms - big weather effects type stuff - and not had any noticeable frame rate issues on the series x. I don’t usually notice these things anyway unless it’s running like a proper dog, and this certainly isn’t whatsoever.

Also people saying it looks like a 360 or even original Xbox game…stop smoking whatever you’re smoking. It’s a From game, so the graphics are always going to be a bit jank, but get over yourself.

Not according to tons of people commenting on era and here.

"Tons of people commenting here"

OK THEN!

I think everyone has mentioned the choppy framerate but it's not so bad to be anywhere near unplayable. And one person can't connect to a server. That's tons of people? Why are you being so antagonistic in this thread, you've been low level trolling in here for days, it's like you can't bear that other people are excited and having fun in a game you might not enjoy so you're just being a negative dick about a game you haven't even played. Maybe you have some personal issues you need to deal with, low self esteem or depression or something. I sympathise if that's the case but don't take it out on us. Stop trying to create drama in here, if you want to denounce the game for technical reasons maybe start a separate thread for it but let us have our moment of fun in peace.

I was having a similar problem late last night with a starting katana that I hadn’t upgraded. Like you I was able to get through the first phase then it would all go wrong. 20th attempt I remembered I could summon so once I had him halfway I introduced him to a massive jellyfish, which distracted him perfectly. 😇

I would agree with almost all of that, but im not sure about the farming part. You just dont get enough souls from normal enemies to make it worthwhile. We need a Shrine of Storms 4-1 area.

Yeah, farm is probably the wrong word there, perhaps gather. Although I'm sure there will be a few bountiful spots to discover that still fit the description of fairly easy overworld mob to farm.

Jesus, ring of Avarice and you know what and that place is insane*. A bit too much in fact. Wouldn't turn down similar, mind. Well, a little less fruitful, maybe?

EDIT* Thinking of later on in DeS 4-, though 4 overall is good too, but later....woah.

Spoiler

Monolith Forest + Storm Ruler = ridiculous amount of Souls.
