I'm confused what to do just at the character select screen. I don't know what some of the attributes mean. 😁

I take it just focus on vigor and endurance as I'm guessing they are health and stamina?

Fuck it, vagabond seems ok.

Vigour to certain extent, but endurance will get you out of far more trouble in the end as it dictates how many times you can consecutively dodge and the speed at which you can do it while carrying gear.

PS4 version has arrived - might just intsall that and have done with it as it sounds like that's still a locked 60.

Do what I did and try a load of classes to see what you like. There's a great camp of soldiers near where you get your horsegoat to practice on that's a great place for someone inexperienced (Like me) to practice basic combat. There's options for stealth, stance breaking and a tougher guy in the middle if you feel like chancing him.

I'm sure there's also lots of beginner guide and videos about the place as well. Eurogamer pointed me at an easy to get weapon that didn't take me long to grind the stats for. Also explore. There's shit to find and do everywhere. Torrent can get you out of a lot of trouble in a hurry since you can mount up in half a second during combat.

Also right at the start when you get to the ghost in the chair next to a hole in the ground. Drop down into the hole. That's a combat tutorial

Last night I got the same vibe from this as I got from Darksiders 2 when it released right before the 360 era came to an end.

From Software’s tech is done.

They need major engine work and to ditch the PS4 gen for their next game.

Not a commentary on the design or gameplay of the game but to have a big game like this that doesn’t look all that special and doesn’t hit constant 60 on new gen is as bit laughable.

No thanks! I'm playing this on PS4 and it's fantastic, I honestly don't care if perhaps the graphics are a little low-fi , this game is all about the action, the world, the atmosphere.

I've been trying to buy a PS5, in a half-hearted way, for most of the last year. They just aren't available if you don't have time to be constantly hunting all over for them, or aren't willing to pay over RRP. If this hadn't come out on PS4 I would be really pissed off with From.

I have got a gaming-spec PC with a RTX3060 card, but fuck sitting up in my office and playing this on a 23" monitor with tiny speakers and a wired controller, when I could be playing it sitting on my sofa on my 65" 4K with Sonos Arc.

Running the PS4 version on the PS5 and its great. After making some progress I loaded up the PS5 app and tried it out from the PS4 save - urgh - a good resolution bump, but janky AF and loads of pop-in I just didn't notice at all with the PS4 one.

Someone said the PS4 version looks better than DS3 and I'd agree, looks fantastic. I won't be going near the PS5 version unless they fix it - but I can't see that happening - It's FROM.

Load times at the moment are excellent on the PS4 running on PS5 - no issues

I'm about 2 hours in and loving it. My only nitpick is the music on the open areas - the cymbal crashing does my head in, reminds me of all of those reality TV docs with the dance of the sugarplum fairy music and the constant cymbal crashes between scenes. Other than that, its all gravy

It has a lot in common with DS, but it feels different in mood somewhat - so far. I have had one or two excellent WTF/laughing events happen so far

That's what I was wondering - got a few minutes to go before PS4 is installed. Really not worth the trade off, then?

Your results may vary depending on taste, but I wanted a 60 fps experience over anything. I've got a 48" OLED TV and the PS4 version on PS5 looks fine to me - you can enable HDR in one of the menus

Yeah I've been playing Horizon and keep hitting L3 to sprint too.

Bit of an underwhelming start for me, I'm only about an hour and a half in. On PS5 the graphics are pretty disappointing so far, especially after playing Demon Souls remake. I just made it out of the training area and so far, so Souls. I did think the character creator was pretty awesome, I spent ages making my guy. I do appreciate the intro to various playstyles. One thing that did impress me though was:

Spoiler

Opening the doors from the training area and being presented with the landscape. Wow!

However, I've never been impressed right away with any of the Souls games, except the Demon Souls remake. Normally the sense of 'this is great' creeps in after a few hours. I'm really excited to start exploring and from the reviews it sounds like this world is deep and full of handcrafted secrets. Decided to start off as a Confessor as I've never used Faith in Souls before, even though healing seems boring to me, on the plus side you get an assassin spell which makes your footsteps quiet and reduces fall damage. So maybe I'll be starting off as a kind of ninja priest?

Going to play more today and uncover the meat of the game.

Played the PC version for a few hours and not seen any huge technical issues, been smooth and reliable throughout. I know with PC's there are a zillion potential factors that an individual machine and software coulda fucked up but not seeing anywhere near the issues people were saying.

So if you have a decently powerful PC (I think a modern fast CPU is probably doing some lifting framerate stability wise) you should be fine!

The scale is impressive, but the thing about this series of games, is that the actual game, the real game - is tiny. It's the little area of trees where you left your runes and the enemy that repeatedly killed you. It's a little blue number that shows your new sword is better than your old sword. It's that one attack that has a longer wind up than the others and you keep dodging into. It's the loop, the lovely, comforting, engrossing Fromsoft loop. But here there's just more of it, and it's in every direction, not just a choice of three of four as with DS. And when you do look up from consuming runes, or smithing, or picking some flowers, the scale is still there.

I think it's just sinking in how much of my life is going to be scrabbling around in this world for the forseeable.

PC version. No particular tech issues yet. A few dropped frames but gsync vrr and all that. Went Samurai so I could use swords and bows from the off as that's always my souls default. Absolutely loved the first few hours. Went off and explored straight away. Got merked in a dungeon that I was obviously completely underlevelled for. Found some cool bits and bobs. Now I have to tear myself away for my kid's 7th birthday party. Fucking yay. Lol.

Little underwhelmed with this so far. The jarring frame rate when you spin the camera is just not what you’d expect from a AAA game and the graphics are actually pretty ugly.

It’s also open world but you can’t climb, it feels too restrictive. And the lore and writing is just about what I would expect from recent GRRM output.

I’ll stick with it but I’m not feeling the 10/10 best game ever reviews I’ve read. I just don’t feel a real compulsion to spend my day playing it.

Geforce 3080, 32GB Ram, Ryzen 5800x. Constant freezing of up to a second, even on menus. No ultrawide support so playing at 3840x1600 with two giant bars on the screen, sigh. Looks pretty grainy and ropey. The "fixes" are all junk, people are trying random things and then noticing the freezes get better as the shader cache is built up.

If you're cursed, like me, this information will save you a lot of time: you can freely re-customise your character's appearance after getting access to the Roundtable; look for a mirror near Fia. So, no more endless restarts after getting into the game and discovering your character looks off.
