So I’ve been wandering around and exploring off the beaten path now for about 10hrs and......I’m bored rigid. There’s just nothing of interest to see or do in the world. The most I’ve managed to find is some Goblins fighting some Knights in a prescripted battle that reappears everytime I go past that location. It’s as if that’s supposed to be impressive or something, even though it’s now old hat in every other game. Comparing this to BOTW is ludicrous. What that game did so well was creating a huge, immersive, believable world and then it filled it with varying stuff to do. Its systems overlapped brilliantly creating an emergent type of gameplay. This just feels empty and ridiculously big for the sake of it. And this is coming from someone that loves wandering around games. Spent hours on Cyberpunk recently just mooching around.

The game feels like it’s years behind the curve and trying to incorporate stuff from more recent games.....the open world, stealth etc. It’s telling that the most fun I’ve had so far is when I was just sticking to a more linear path like the old games. Best bit in the 10hrs has been the tutorial and early little dungeon.

Now going to go back to the main path and do that because there’s absolutely no worthwhile reason at all to explore around as far as I can see.

I know it's fresh and the excitement is high, but calling the exploration of the open world unparalleled in gaming is a bit OTT. World of warcraft had all the same mystery, freedom, sense of dread when bumping into higher level baddies and it was released over 15 years ago.

Calm down!

This is light years beyond Breath of the Wild.

Is it normal after about seven hours to still be using all the same equipment you started with?

Potentially, from what I've played the equipment you find early on is not much use to a magic user for example.

Certainly in the other games you can play the whole game with the starting equipment

I'm not an open world fan, I prefer a tightly regimented experience which From do so well. The way the areas used to join together was genius at times. It also had that element of claustrophobia and dread which this doesn't have.

Elden is a very upbeat and generous game so far. Long way to go though!

Could you spoiler some examples?

Spoiler

Wandering around the world, no horse. Stumble on a ruin, nothing much about. Seems utterly dead. Destroyed remains laying on the floor. Keep walking, hear a rumble, this absolutely huge fuck off thing born of flame and earth just rises from the dirt with a weapon the size of a fucking house swinging wildly, can barely get out of its range, panic sets in. I summon Torrent, leg it out of range, let it swing, barely missing me and I charge in, sword dragging by my side on the ground and swipe at both legs, dismount and use two swift strong attacks to stagger it, chop away, it rises, swings, sends me flying about 20 feet.

Absolute fucking insane battle, out of nowhere, completed unexpected. Heart racing, spectacle off the scale.

Not a patch on BOTW unfortunately. The overworld is empty, there is little environmental interaction, you can’t explore to the same extent because there is no swimming or climbing.

Not to say it isn’t worth playing, it’s just From aren’t Nintendo.

Who said that? I avoided all the reviews. It’s not just OTT its also complete bollocks. So far this has been one of the emptiest and most pointless open game worlds I’ve encountered. It’s like say Skyrim but without a story, and no quests or anything of note to find or do in it. There’s just been endless amounts of enemies to one shot. It’s also crazy that In 2022 most of those enemies just stand stationary on the spot waiting for you to trigger them. Really at odds with the open world design. Crazy thing is, it looks like I’ve only wandered around a ludicrously minuscule amount of the first bit of map too, which is bigger than many whole games. What’s the point?

I’m guessing when you do discover something it’ll be a dungeon that contains standard Souls gameplay. Which again makes the BOTW comparisons daft. That had intricate puzzles, complex dungeons, varied combat, quests, mazes, riddles to solve, treasure hunts, tasks to complete etc. It was loaded with varied content. This just seems to be a humongous world with chunks of standard Souls gameplay scattered over it.

How the fuck do you beat this first boss? I'm just not having fun.

I'm not even underpowered. Followed a thing on YouTube to get an advantage early on and it means fuck all. I summon a wee guy outside the boss and also summon my own wolves and I can't get the cunts hp bar by half way.

Do we think there's anything like World Tendency or Hollowing is in this? There must be a penalty for repeated death other than dropping your runes. Feels like I'm getting off lightly for dying. Things are very different at night. Enemies are transformed into different species. Is this a day/night thing or triggered by other events, perhaps?

The loading screen hints mention a madness effect similar to Bloodborne. Has anyone experienced that yet?

Has anyone killed any of the NPC Invaders yet? I killed one in the river and got a really tasty looking weapon drop, of course my stats don't let me use it yet. Met the equivalent of Mildred too but no way is she going down yet.

Does the horse get upgrades? Anyone seen anything like that?

Pyro seems very effective so far.
