Deathloop

I really like the setup of having no savegames, but I've also had the game crash on me  twice, when I was quite some way into a particular segment of the day. It's spectacularly annoying to lose all your unique weapons, residuum, trinkets, and info because the game locked up, especially after I spent a good 45mins Goldeneye-ing my way through the complex with a silenced nailgun.

I'm enjoying the hell out of this, but might put it on hold until a patch comes out.

I’m quite enjoying it but it hasn’t got its hooks in me like the Dishonored series.

What I do like is that it encourages you to play differently from their previous games by just using whatever weapons and powers you find on each run, although I have found a way to save some of them now after I die.

I’m basically just ignoring what the game is telling me to do and messing about, that’s where the fun in their titles comes from.

It seems to open up a bit more once you’ve done a couple of missions, giving you more free rein.

The menus broke when I tried to change resolution. Now I've got a weird box taking up the top left eighth of the screen, kind of like a console.

If anyone knows how to scroll down the visuals menu let me know. It's not down, or mwheel down, or S, or pagedown.

Nevermind, restarted and it was OK. Still runs like crap even with DLSS. That's enough of that

Really getting into this now, it’s still Arkane but it’s different. I think the thing with their previous games is that despite being told you can play them how you want, I always went for stealth. I think with this it will be possible to do that as well, but to begin with at least I feel you’re encouraged to go around killing everyone, the only thing you need to worry about is staying alive - but otherwise I’m just letting loose with whatever I can lay my hands on.

I’ve just done Charlie’s mission, that was brilliant.

Also I tried ray tracing but it just isn’t worth it, the game looks gorgeous anyway in 60fps mode and it’s much more responsive and playable which is way more important when everything kicks off.

Had my first ever session on this last night. So far I'm on the fence but I'm planning on having a good session tonight in hopes of finding the mojo.

What I like

The visual style is unique and pleasing

The actual concept is intriguing

Voice acting is on point

Actual controls feels responsive

What I don't like (so far)

The level design/world layout is a mess

The map isn't very helpful

The menus are a bit cumbersome to navigate

The AI of the bog standard NPCs is really bad, these are some of the dumbest NPCs I've encountered in quite a while

As I've probably only scratched the surface (I've only done the tutorial area and the next one after that, after you find your flat) it's too early for me to be too harsh. I remember having similar "issues" with the Dishonored games and they turned out great once I got settled in properly. I'm crossing my fingers that'll be the case for Deathloop as well because the narrative does tickle me.

There’s a map? I actually think the UI is really good, everything is there if you want it all nearly catalogued, as such it’s easy to go back and access clues that you’ve found etc. And I like that everything is pretty much in the menus whilst the onscreen UI is clean and uncluttered.

Also think the level design is great, Arkane are really one of the few developers that design them in such a way as offer many different routes and play styles. As a sandbox it’s cool, and I bet it really opens up once you gain more powers. Love the way you can get up of roofs, through windows, down alleys, it’s very much like Dishonored in that sense - they make use of the entire 3D space.

Kind of sad that their next game is that online multiplayer vampire game, but maybe they’ll do something interesting there too. In saying that the one thing I’m not bothered about in Death Loop is the invasion thing. I understand that it’s to add tension but so far for me it seems scrappy.

Yeah, in each zone you can pick up a map. To access it you need to go to the menus and select the zone you're in and move the cursor to the map. It doesn't show you where you are on the map or any points of interest, it's just a old fashioned static map.

I’ll say one thing for this game, when you break someone’s neck, you really break the fuck out of their neck. I mean, it comes right round. There’s no ambiguity there. That neck is 100% broken. A complete writeoff.

I turned it off on PS5. You still get Julianna invading, but she's AI controlled and it's not quite so much "I don't know the map as well as... oh I'm dead".

I had the same problems on PS5, a year ago. I don't think a patch is coming, unfortunately.

For those who just starting this I would say that whilst the main storyline is very linear and signposted, there's a fairly decent backstory that can pieced together by going off track and following various clues and breadcrumb trails.

None of it is essential but figuring out stuff like 'turning a valve in the morning will lead to a door being left open in the afternoon, which in turn gives you access to a room that explains a cool bit of the mystery' was pretty fun.

Haven't done much gaming this year apart from Elden Ring because of a big house move/renovation project (never again) but currently making a pig of myself with this, Prodeus and Metal Hellsinger, all thanks to Gamepass. Deathloop is my favourite out of the three but fuck me is it good to come back to games after a bit of time off.

Good to see you back @Uncle Nasty I moved house this year and all, takes it out of you doesn’t it!

I’m enjoying Death Loop as well, hell of a game.

I have a question about weapon infusion. I I shell out the residuum and infuse a weapon, does that mean it's mine forever? So if I go into a mission and chuck it away and leave with a different one, can I just reselect the original weapon from the loadout screen? Or does infusion just mean you keep it if you loop?

You keep it. Which is why when you get some OP gun and infuse it, there's not much incentive to use anything else

Sorry, do you mean you keep it whatever happens, or that you only keep it when you loop?

Whatever happens. It will then be available on the gear select screen in mission select.

Quite enjoying this but finding it quite difficult. Also a bit confused, I though the game reset you to the beach after you die, but you continue where you leave off but with all your gear gone.

Atmosphere etc is spot on as seems usual with Arkane games though

Just keep playing and exploring a lot, and doing things at the right time. You’ll see.

@K

I don't think that's the case.

If you drop an infused weapon and leave the level without it it will only then be available again after the day resets. You'll only get it back in the morning.

If that's so, apologies for not pointing that out. It makes sense logically as you're not accessing the time loop within the same day.
