The game is recommending high settings which is allowing me to hit 60 on my 1440p monitor, but GeForce is suggesting they should be lower.

The GeForce recommended settings for pretty much everything are usually terrible, in my experience. On my rig I find for a lot of games they particularly like recommending insane levels of anti-aliasing while setting everything else to Low. I don't even dare look at what they think I should be running for Flight Simulator.

OK - I looked. They've recommended turning literally every single setting down, or off, and lowering resolution. Given that I thought the game was running pretty well, this is obviously nonsense.

Yeah I've set everything on ultra and am now tweaking stuff to hit the magic 60fps

I had everything set to High and it ran fine in low density areas. Geforce is telling me nothing should be higher than medium, with some settings at low or even off.

If anything needs to be set to high, it's the clouds

I've read some comments saying that turning off the live data settings (weather/traffic) can improve performance so that may be worth a shot @Isaac

This is one of the most fabulous gaming experiences of the current gen.  Yes.. it's so simple & also so pointless, but what a riot it is to fly over one's house.

The tech that is powering this game really is quite something hope it be used in other games

Can you fly from any airport? I want to take off from Bournemouth as i was supposed to be flying to cyprus today

yes, you just have to find it - if you don't know the code to search on then zooming in close on the area of map should pop it up.

Our tiny local airport at Oostwold (NL), with just a grass runway, is even in it. 37000 airports are in this, mate. If it's got a air traffic tower and an airport code (EHOW in Oostwold's case), it's in there. 8-)

Just did all the landing challenges, feel like a pro at landing now, as long as I'm in third person, it's so much harder to actually do it with the constrained awareness of a cockpit, and having to actually check the instruments rather than just the UI.

Pleased with this, #355 in the world, first try!

Are people making mods for this yet? My dad's a fan of the old war planes like the Spitfire, but plays IL2 Sturmovik which looks a bit shit these days compared to MS Flight simulator. Might be able to get him playing this if there's the option of flying a Spitfire.

All clear off Florida at the moment!

(Immediately after I took the last one of these, I came out of active pause and the plane fell out of the sky )

Try further south towards Cuba / Dominican Republic...

I’ll be curious to see how many are still interested in a couple of weeks.

I’m loving it at the moment and think it’s great but it is just take off and land as far as any game aspects go. The rest is kind of just an interactive 3D google maps.

I suspect it’ll be something great to have to dip into occasionally but, as excited as I am to play it right now, once I’m up in the air that’s kind of it until I come back down again. It’s enthralling now, but that can’t last for long can it?

It seems like an amazing curio to pick up and look at from time to time rather than anything in particular, which is fine and I should probably stop trying to define it.

well yes, it’s a game that 95% of us wouldn’t buy at full price, but 0.5% of gamers/flight geeks go nuts over.
but it’s also an amazing advert for Microsoft’s cloud and bing maps.

incidentally, Microsoft rejoined the leading geospatial standards organisation this week (which is spending a lot of its time thinking about cloud, cloud processing apis, simulation and big data). I somewhat doubt that it’s a coincidence.

Doing the LHR-HND redeye - except now I’ll be bright-eyed & bushy-tailed and having slept very nicely on arrival thanks - as I’ve taken off, set the auto-pilot and gone to bed! Should get up and have had breakfast in time for landing.

And I flew partway through Africa earlier today.

This ‘game’!

I used to love doing the 'learning centre' things in FSX, but it looks to be completely absent from this release.  I know there are a handful (8?) super basic lessons, but the learning centre in FSX was truly in depth, going through all the instruments to the point I felt I actually understood how to do an 'IFR' landing.

Despite the graphical fidelity, it feels quite empty compared to the old versions?

Some people go mad for simulator games. Once I was in a large electronics store in Dortmund and took this photo:

This was only part of the section dedicated to the genre, IIRC it went on out of the frame for a section at least as long again.

IMO flying a plane is much more interesting than driving a truck, so I think it's safe to say some people will be sinking hundreds of hours into it.

Heard a storm in the (real life) distance earlier, so I went and found it!

And trying to get back home I think I almost got my head around how VOR works.

Can anyone help? I've got keyboard & mouse control but when I select basic controls from list it just shows me a greyed flight controller?

Cheers

Maybe try a different USB port. Had the same with my flight stick not registering.
