Do you have to download the world updates separately on the PC version, or do they come as part of the broader process of patching/updating the game? If it's the former, how much space do they take up?

You have to go into the Marketplace and download them separately. It's a bit shit. I would hope Microsoft will streamline this for the console release.

They tend to be 10-15Gb or so IIRC.

Edit: Actually they may be a bit larger as I think that just be the map data but each update also  includes a load of other under the hood stuff which adds more heft to the DL. Updating the game is a bit of a frag tbf/

I fully expect to be bored of this after a couple of weeks and the cloud/weather porn has got old.

First sortie - crashing into ex-g/f houses

Second sortie - crashing into old schools/workplaces

Third sortie - visiting abroad places I've been irl.

Beyond that, dunno. Hope they add some kind of gamey structure to it. It does have landing challenges but I already know that all of my flights will be either aborted or end tragically.

I suspect this will be true of many, many people.

Unless you are really keen on learning how a plane works or just a virtual tourist like me then it might be hard to find reasons to fire it up. That said, almost a year on and I am still not tired of just chilling out soaking up the views for an hour or two per week.  That landing challenges can be quite addictive if you get into them and you will be getting better at (virtual) flying if you do keep at it.

@Uncle Nasty alas this probably won’t be an option for Xbox players, but there are other apps that can provide a career mode which can help. I’ve just set myself a goal of making deliveries to circumnavigate the globe with a little app called skypark. These all depended on hooking in to the SimConnect API though - no idea if that’s a thing on Xbox.

I fired it up this morning and I thought it was going to work... alas, you see a bit of in-engine stuff but then get that screen saying it's out tomorrow. Gah.

For those looking for a little direction, I noticed some of the achievements made reference to activities, weekly activities, and so on. There's also some fascinating ones, like get permission to land and then shut the engines off to land dead stick. There are also some landmarks to spot. Achievements are worth a browse if you're wanting to know the current game structure.

Playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 on a newly built PC, with my first ever joystick is one of the fondest gaming experiences I have. I used to make a cup of tea, plan a flight from NYC to London or somewhere (usually in a 747 in the rain) and it would literally restore my soul. Very envious of those of you who get to play this - I will just have to make do with watching all these videos for now!

They haven’t, apparently. To the level that some of the discovery tours require you to download world updates.

But console players: you really do want those world updates - they include better terrain, additional thematic buildings, more modelled airports etc. And if you’re in the U.K., a noticeably better London.

In terms of PC detail settings, what does the XSX run the game at? Not sure if they've said.

I only ask because I saw someone on Twitter earlier comment that the XSX does a better job at 4k than his PC.

It’s quite likely it does, given the pc performance improvements remain in beta till tomorrow.

Satellite imagery on the map screen is the absolute best thing to come from this update, however much extra performance we get.

Just today I wanted to fly by some volcanic plugs in the Sahara but, without a proper map, didn't have a hope of finding them. Tomorrow I shall go see them.

Floats and skis are cool too.

Load it. Download the U.K. update (I’m being repetitive, but if you’re in the U.K. you do want to do this). Stare.

I think tomorrow it’s “download the pc update, while downloading the content packs on Xbox” (mostly to take the console on holiday) then worry about actually playing it on Wednesday.

I can only see airport and aircraft updates.

A guy who was a good friend when I was at school is a pilot of private jets that you can hire these days - basically a flying taxi for rich people who aren't rich enough to own their own private jet. His Instagram is often filled with whatever destinations he's at, the Seychelles one day, Macau another, Dubai another.

This will be the closest 99. 999% of people get to his job.

Having never played a Flight Sim, but being a sucker for a peripheral, I’m trying to track down a Hotas One.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for months, why I was so short-sighted on purchasing the plastic tat up front is a real low point.

@Stanley Squirrels vids are great aren’t they. All his original ones for the PC version are still really relevant too. Particularly loved the one where he did a flight IRL then reflex it in the sim. Brilliant.

Ooh I’ll have to check that one out, and yes I think he’s brilliant, very easy to understand and his delivery is natural and relaxed.

I managed to get one from Argos, won't arrive to my local store till Thursday but it's only a few extra days to wait! Think I will wait, don't want to start it with the controller then have to switch over.
