I'm a supporter of VAR.  But using it for shit like that is a fucking joke.

They do need to look at that rule with the goalie on the line. That needs to be ref judgement and not a VAR call.

However Scotland should never have been in a position for that to matter. They only have themselves to blame.

Two retaken penalties in the tournament now. It's bullshit. It didn't correct something unfair, it's just ruining the entertainment of a game.

We went from cheering an amazing, tense moment to just complaining for about five minutes. Leaves a bad taste.

Oh well... I'm glad for England but I enjoyed watching Japan and I'm glad they're both through.

The keeper gains an advantage by coming off the line when a penalty is taken. There are rules against doing it and referees very rarely act upon the rule.

VAR is either in or out in my opinion. You can't pick and choose, if the ref doesn't penalise the encroachment it's a clear and obvious error.

Again I am a huge supporter of VAR, but they shouldn't be using it for those things. The rules for the goalkeeper is fine, but it shouldn't be VAR checkable it has to be up to the official. I like the use of extra officials behind the goal, like in Europe, so they should be checking for goalkeeper position. It is the over use of VAR that will give those who oppose it the ammunition they need.

I had Nigeria Vs France on 36-1 earlier in the week with £12 on it to end 0-0. I really hate VAR and that new rule.

They'll have players staggering the kick next season to ensure the keeper is forward of the line.

Hitting the ref with the ball is also going to cause some comedy moments.

The problem is that the rule has been open to interpretation for a hundred years.  Now, VAR can decide if a players knee is offside and according to a black and white interpretation, a goal is now disallowed.

I've said it before, the VAR implementation has been done by someone who wants it to fail.

I suppose you're right about it being all in or not.

I am not convinced that the distance she was at, made it particularly unfair as a rule.

It's hard to say. I'm fine for var when it comes to fouls because it feels important to check some dirty play. On the other hand, the loss of momentum while the VAR check happens can get boring and frustrating. The psychological torment of it all, purely from an entertainment point of view, is it making the game better? (I dunno lol, just got into football).

I am not looking forward to penalty shootouts if we have to waste three minutes between every single penalty checking if it's OK.

There was farce all over the shop - Scotland conceding two from such a comfy position, then VAR for being so pernickity about a minor infraction, then the referee for adding on less time than she took reviewing the decision in the first place, infuriating both sets of players.

Were penalties broken in the first place? Was there widespread clamour for a global crackdown on keepers being an inch or two forward when the ball is finally kicked? Were there just not enough penalties being scored, embarrassing strikers the world over?

Yeah, it's the letter of the law, but isn't a penalty better when the procedure is closer to a guideline in spirit?

I’m amazed at what VAR is being used for now.

Is the ref asking for any of these reviews or is everything now scrutinised by the VAR officials and they relay what should be disallowed/retaken when the ref was perfectly happy with what happened or didn’t see an infraction?

Not sure where this ends nor how it can be sustainable if it’s hard to hold anyone to account nor understand where/why/when VAR might kick in.

Just caught up with what happened in the Scotland match. It’s a watershed moment because I’m sure that goalkeepers have been off the line like that more often than not for every penalty I’ve seen taken and refs have just ignored it like tonight’s would have without VAR.

The law is an ass when it comes to moving before a penalty is struck. It's practically impossible for the goalkeeper get that timing right, if they are going to persist then they need to tie wherever restrictions are imposed on goalkeeper movement to the referee's whistle.

Good news. VAR will not rule on goalkeeper movement in the Premier League apparently.

Still sucks for the WWC though. Will the VAR / penalty thing be applied in shoot-outs? Penalties could take about 40 minutes to complete...

Who decides what bits of VAR to decide on for each competition?

Are we going to have different VAR rules for the Prem, the FA Cup, European games, etc and how are spectators going to have any clue what might be up for scrutiny?

It sounds that arbitrary. Which is just about to be expected. The FA didn’t exactly set a good example with their inconsistent use of VAR in last season’s FA Cup. Football gonna football.
