So BBC saying Barnsley have survived but they finished in the bottom 3. Does that mean Wigan are 100% getting the points deduction this season then?

What is this weird feeling? I'm happy the Swans won but I wasn't really bothered about us getting into the playoffs as I don't think the squad's really in a strong position to push for and survive in the Premier League right now.

I share your feeling.  The squad isnt good enough for top level and our owners certainly arent.  I wouldn't worry though, Brentford will hammer us over two legs.

The nightmare is that we somehow scrap past Brentford only to find Cardiff waiting for us in the final. Then we have to support the Swans going for it!

I’m glad you did it as a) it was a mad night and b) we may finally discover the answer to how on earth would they play Cardiff vs Swansea at Wembley without the M4 looking like Fury Road and London burning down.

 

Its very odd though to be in the play offs again and not be immediately in nothing matters bar football mode and sorting tickets and not talking about Wembley with my mates, but also needing to talk a little bit about the possibility of Wembley again.

I would be amazed if not, as it would leave the football league open to all manner of lawsuits from clubs who have suffered the same fate and been relegated in the past.  It is open and shut really that if you drop into administration you are docked 12 points, every team knows it so Wigan don’t stand a chance of overturning it.

I dunno, Brentford are really going to need to pick themselves up after throwing away their chance and you’ll be in a massive high.

 

Our games against Fulham will be interesting as Fulham shouldn’t be too down about missing out and they won it two years ago, plus they took us apart a couple of weeks ago. But, honours have tended to be fairly even the last few years with us tending to get results at home against them.

 

They do have two ex players of ours though and much better fore power, but ignore they aren’t on form and our boys are......

Also - I always put money on us to finish top 6 to finance the play offs (take the winnings and put it on us winning he semis to finance Wembley).

 

I did it this year - am now £100 up, but no point lumping on against Fulham unless I want a giant new tv for the final if we get there!

I remember the season the Swans got promoted to the Premier League last time, Cardiff were also in the playoffs but ended up falling short to Reading. There was a lot of weird talk then about how Swans fans would have to avoid travelling on the M4 for fear of meeting Cardiff fans on the way there or back. If it actually happens that we both end up in the final this year, it'll probably coincide with a second covid wave forcing everyone to stay at home.

Yep I would bet good money against Brentford going up via the play-offs, as they have done exactly what we (Leeds) did last season and it takes some getting over.  
 

In retrospect they would probably have been better off not running us and WBA so close with that awesome 8 game winning streak.

I guess it’s possible that fans from both sets of clubs would go to London for the day as unlike the other play off finals this season then the pubs will be open, but I assume the Met will quite happily deal with a couple of hundred fans from each team.

 

Im not sure I could even deal with watching it on the telly.

I couldn't make the playoff final at Wembley when we went up a few years ago and it's probably just as well since I had to turn the TV off once the penalties started because I genuinely thought I was about to die from the palpitations. I didn't know we'd won until my dad rung me in tears. He doesn't even support Huddersfield

 

I guess that's what spending decades thinking something won't ever happen will do to you though.. If it happens again I'll probably be all dead inside having sampled that poisoned chalice once already.

Anybody got a readily available stat of how often the team who finishes third goes up via the play-offs?  My guess is it will be less than 25% of the time, which you would expect to be the base level given 4 teams compete.

Exactly this.  Who knows what can happen once you are a Premier League side (Just ask Leicester fans).  Jeff Bezos for example might suddenly decide he fancies owning a Premier League team, stick a pin in a map & hit Swansea!!!!!!

What an evening.  Never have I been so pissed off at a side that finished in the top 2.  Dodgy defence, too many touches, general moaning about lack of urgency.  Feels like we scraped victory from the jaws of...victory?  Weird feeling.  Maybe I’ll replace it with another.

Depends on how you finish third.   Leeds were heartbroken last year, Villa were the form side going into the playoffs and they won it.  The year before Fulham finished third but deep down they probably knew they weren't going to get automatic so they'd have gone into the playoffs mentally prepared.  I think the same will probably be true of Brentford. Yes, they could have pinched an automatic spot but they've been in the playoff positions for ages and I don't think it will feel like they've blown it so they could go in full of confidence.  I suspect it will be a Brentford - Fulham final if things go to form, but it's wide open this year.

Oh I'm certain if Leeds ended up I the playoffs we'd have not gone up.
