Sleaford Mods on now. Find them a bit embarrassing.

Confidence Man are straight up incredible.

Yeah. Really invigorating and exciting. Visually and sonically they were something else. Very impressed.

 

I love the new music discovery aspect of Glastonbury, even watching from a safe distance on iPlayer.

 

Supergrass are okay but kind of anonymous. They lack that special magic that would have elevated them to headline status. Hardly any chemistry or vibe to them.

 

Potential Mary Chain/Primals crossover with Gillespie later? Drums for Some Candy Talking perhaps?

 

Really strong lineup this year I thought, one of the best I can remember.

supergrass were the last band I saw play live in 2020. They were amazing. They’re also twenty years past their festival sell by date, for the obvious reason that that’s the point they were at their peak.

still a lot better than Sam fender though.

 

(tomorrow I see elbow are playing, and even as a fan of elbow they only really have grounds for divorce and one day like this - and grounds of divorce only really works live: the recorded version is tame)

Confidence Man, Wet Leg and Bonobo were great at entertaining the crowd. Just watching St. Etienne and it's a bit sad, Sarah Cracknell's voice hasn't aged that well but still has that hints of what it used to be. Probably a bit unfair but seemed a bit cabaret.

you mean lyrics full of innuendo, repeated over one note, with the occasional I-IV-V guitar riff doesn’t work for you?

(I listened to there twenty minutes of songs for two hours earlier in the week, and they were fine, but it is music by numbers attached to an ok lyric, whereas ellish is interesting on both counts)

I love that Chaise Longe song, was great seeing that snippet on one of the shows. Little Simz is the best I’ve seen so far I think. Is that Khruangbin on iplayer? I dig their stuff so I’d like to see that.

Shame that the sound was so bad for the Primals, it was better later on but still a mess. Bass player was very nervous and Innes' guitar way too loud. Screamdelica material sounding horribly dated. Can't stand that record now but still love the Xterminator/Evil Heat tracks. Beautiful Future is a great track but sounded weak last night.

 

Jesus and Mary Chain proved that moody indie shoegaze is a young man's game. Depressing for all the wrong reasons. The fuck has happened to William? He didn't even sing his lead vocal on Darklands and obviously hated being on camera. They were my band at at college but seeing them last night was like watching your grandad wheezing out his last at a hospice. Jim sounded awful, stiff and awkward. They looked like what would happen if Jo Brand and Paul Whitehouse formed a band with their indie mates.

@Uncle Nasty You're right, the Screamadelica stuff did sound dated. Come Together was awful. I still enjoyed their set, but even the closing stomping Rocks sounded tame.

 

Caught up with Supergrass and Wolf Alice today. Thought the former were okay but seemed to lack energy, whereas Wolf Alice were immense. God I love Ellie.

 

I don't know who I need to watch to see a performance full of joy, energy and enthusiasm. I need something like Janelle Monae from a few years ago. Her set was astonishing

Confidence Man and Blossoms.

 

I bailed on the Primal Scream set before the encore. Couldn't get through Come Together and couldn't face Movin' On Up and Rocks.

All the old man stuff I expected to like - Sleafords, Mary Chain, Primals, Supergrass etc really didn't move me and made me a bit depressed, but the younger bands I'd never even heard before made me check out a load of new music.
