I was just playing Batman on FCE Ultra and it reminded me how ace I thought the ability to walljump was back when I first played it on the NES.

Do you know which game first used the technique of allowing you to bounce off a wall to perform a jump in the opposite direction? And which other games use the technique?

Mario 64 is the most obvious one, great fun to once you got it, also sonic heroes uses it for some parts of the levels, although they've made it so sonic sticks to the walls to allow you to do it.

Tony hawks underground also allows you to do it.

Ninja Gaiden was the first wasn't it?

Huzzah! I'd forgotten about that one. I just had a go at it and memories came flooding back :(

Both it and Batman have 1989 as their year of creation in-game though - I wonder which came first?

Edit #1 - I forgot about the 1988 arcade version - did it definitely have walljumping? Ah, I'll fire up the XBox and see myself anyway :(

Edit #2 - Hmm... it has a backflip move when you run against certain objects, but I'm not sure if that really counts as walljumping ;) PS: How the feck did I forget about this version, having lost so many 10p coins to it?

How old is Kabuki quantum Fighter? That also had walljumping

1990, according to it's intro (NES).

Edit - There is a move where you can grab certain platforms and swing, or climb certain walls, but I haven't been able to walljump in it.

I think it's probably its hardest in Super Metroid, the exact timing and changing directions.. that got drilled into me by the end of the game. In fact when I was doing wall jumping in Mario Sunshine and Prince of Persia I was doing the direction thing but you're not meant to and it made them fall off the walls :( so I had to force myself to stop to make it easier ;)

Double Dragon III had the first wall jump I ever saw, though it wasn't there to allow you to jump platforms so much as to hit oponents behind you.

Which version is that? I've been jumping into walls in the NES version and trying all sorts of stuff with no luck.

I haven't played Prince of Persia yet, but the walljumping in SMS was great but woefully underused - there were bits in some of the void levels where you had to use it to reach higher platforms, and that was about it. More void levels, please!

The arcade version, I remember as I was really impressed by it, and I'm pretty sure the spectrum version had it too. Oh, and didn't Guy in Final Fight have it too?

Yep, and it's amazing how ACE Strider still looks ;)

Investigating arcade DD3 now...

Edit - Yep, you can bounce off the wall for a flying kick. Pity the game is so terrible compared to the original Double Dragon.

In Mario Sunshine and PoP you just use the jump button, it's much much much easier than Metroid for sure ;)
