Back from seeing this. It's just......dull. I feel like we're living in a post Top Gun Maverick world so I need my blockbusters to be extremely exciting, and this just wasn't. Maybe I'm done with the MCU?

Post credit scene spoilers below.

Spoiler

We really going down the Z list of characters before we get F4, XMen and Galactus aren't we? At least I've heard the name Hercules before I guess.

Considering the awesomeness that is the Jason Aaron comic book run, it's a shame they chose to double down on all-out campiness I feel. Fine for the She-Hulk series but I'd like for Thor to carry a bit more gravitas.

I agree, but Chris Hemsworh is such a limited actor, dumb surfer dude is all he can play really.

Just back from this - not as good as Ragnarok.  The flow and pacing are off partly because it keeps changing tone.

But lots to enjoy and really really funny, but it doesn’t quite work.

And me and my eldest were very pleased with the mid credits

Spoiler

Roy Kent!!

I only caught a whiff of reviews and impressions beforehand but with expectations managed I enjoyed that. It was certainly better than Multiverse of Madness.

It’s mid-tier Marvel but they’ve made so many it’s in good company.

Enjoyable mid range MCU but no where near as good as Ragnarok. I thought some of the jokes wore very thin very quickly and didn't think the emotional beats hit at all. I really enjoyed what Chritian Bale was doing but don't think we got enough of him at all and he's just going to end up in the pantheon of villians we'll all forget about as time goes on. There was still plenty of laughs (mainly from Korg) and some lovely visuals, although how many side shots of Thor jumping into enemies do we need? Feels very one trick. After how much I loved Ragnarok and all of Taika's other work, I'm a little dissapointed.

I feel so broken. As a card carrying MCU apologist for many years, this latest MCU phase of films just isn't hitting for me at all (outside Spider-man), which is a shame because I really thought going into the weird, cosmic and multiverse direction would be really exciting and fresh.

I don't do half star ratings on letterboxd so whilst I think Shang-Chi, Dr.Strange and Thor are better films than Black Widow and Eternals, I didn't feel like they were 4 star films or the latter 2 star films. So they all just sit there in the middle really.

I'm enjoying the TV stuff way more than the films right now.

Just back.  Meh.

It all feels so pointless really.  Where's it going?  Is it meant to be funny or serious?

The baddie felt like he was out of a different film.  Russell Crow has added another supendously stupid accent to his portfolio (I think this is worse than Les Mis).

Spoiler

Was it a joke or a tragedy that the children got taken in the night?  I can't tell because they played it both ways.

The whole thing needs a new nexus point and much as I'd like to say otherwise, I just don't think they have the cast or the stories to get me to care enough.

A few days removed and the more I think about it, the more I think I hate this film?

That spoiler sums up my main issue.

Spoiler

It was hard to take anything seriously when everything was leading up to a punchline, and often not a good one. When Natalie Portman is lying on the flor dying, I was genuinely astonished that Taika didn't throw in a gag at the end. I imagined him sitting behind the monitor doing that meme where the kid is desperate to say something, trying his hardest not to throw in a goat screaming.

I cared about nobody and nothing in this film. But at least Christian Bale was good, though that may be because it felt like he had stepped in from a completely different movie.

I think my days of seeing these films in the cinema may be done. :(  Aside from Spider-Man, these last batch of Marvel films have been "poor" to "alright".

I pretty much agree with the general sentiment in here. It relies too heavily on humour, to the point where it undercut everything.

I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it, and it was very funny, but that’s all it was.

Been to see it this morning and thought it was pretty poor. Thor as a character seems to just be becoming more stupid and oafish in every film of his own he’s in. Doesn’t really seem believable to me, everything he’s been through and all it does is make him more childish and unaware?

Film was ok, but one thing it definitely was was the worst Taika Waititi film to-date, and that’s my own biggest disappointment.  My personal theory is that he’s in a stunning mid-life crisis, and it probably all sounded great to him and Rita Ora after a few lines.

Spoiler

We’re just watching Ted Lasso, so the post-credits scene was really surprising in that respect!

I loved Thor Ragnarok and have really enjoyed all of Taika Waititi's filmography. But, apart from a couple of moments, I found this to be a big disappointment. It reminded me a bit of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 where they just ramped up the bits that people liked about the first to 11 and in the process destroyed what made it work in the first place. It never has a moment to breath and it’s constantly undercutting any moments that might have any actual gravity by inserting more and more jokes (usually retreading the same comedy beat for the Nth time), whether they're appropriate for the moment or not. How the hell are you supposed to give a toss about the stakes when none of characters seem to care that much. I remember Ragnarok and his other films being far more adept at juggling tones. The stories about the current visual effects studios crunch in Hollywood are real as the special effects in this were all over the shop. My main feeling after coming out was that I wish I'd bought a ticket to see Top Gun: Maverick again instead of this overblown weightless CGI nonsense.

I didn't care for this. Bale was great when he was on the screen, but he wasn't on for that long. I thought a lot of the humour missed and like most people, outside of Spider-Man, this phase has been average at best.

I kinda feel a little bad for Bale giving it all as always and ending up in this of all mcu films.

I genuiely thought that getting a juggernaut in like Bale to play a baddie might have meant seeing him spread across various films, especially with his character being one that can kills Gods.

I really liked what he brought to the role when we did get to see him on screen.

This was fine. It didn’t have the strong theme and character stuff that glued Ragnarok together so robustly but its instinct to go for the absurd or a joke about Thor juggling his current and past relationships carried it. The ending didn’t land nearly as strongly as it probably should have.

Spoiler

The black and white planet was a nice gimmick and a cute riff about black and white cuts of movies. Probably the best joke was “Have you seen Event Horizon?”.

I like the MCU but haven't caught up, last thing I watched was Falcon and the Winter Soldier (which I never finished) but out of the blue have had two friends from completely different social groups text warning me to not watch this under any circumstances - nobody has ever messaged me anything like that about any movie before. I'm sure I'll watch this one day on Disney+ so no spoilers please but.. is it really that bad? THOR 2 BAD? I loved Ragnarok!

It’s not nearly that bad. It’s perfectly fine, just disappointing considering what the same team achieved last time out.
