Thor 4: Love and Thunder - 2022

Because I like superhero films in general and love cinema, is the short answer.

 

I didn't enjoy a reasonable amount first 3 phases either, but the interconnectivity kept things interesting and, like I said, was unique. Plus those original characters held a lot of interest for me.

 

I was actually looking forward to this (as I was Dr Strange, and Spider-Man and...) and I do go into each one looking to enjoy it (the same with the TV shows) but - and I accept this is probably the rose-tinting coming into play - this phase has just felt all over the place and over-stuffed with potential new characters, setups, overarching themes etc and feels, sloppy?

 

The next 3 due out - Black Panther 2, Ant-Man 3 and GotG3 - will be a test of my resolve I guess, as I hated all three of their previous entries and so I'm really not enthused about any of them.

I was up for this after enjoying Ragnarok but I found Love and Thunder a bit of a slog.

 

It was noticeable that the humour hit a bum note nearly every time. The cinema was pretty full but there was nary a titter.

Got exactly what I wanted from it. 
 

Thor went from B-tier scrub to Best Avenger. The character is played perfectly for laughs otherwise he would be a boring suoerman type.

Yeah, the humour is very poor. It's all deflationary so there's not much to laugh at. And I think Korg is unfunny is every film - doesn't help.

I don't think you're wrong at all. I used to read comics, mainly Marvel, throughout the 90s and early oughts and the MCU's already falling into the EXACT same pattern that made me give up on them. 

 

Plots getting too intricate yet simultaneously messy, time travel/alternate universes to fix expensive and unpopular decisions and - most egregiously - way too many interdependencies on anciliary titles (in MCU terms, these are films but - especially - the TV shows). 

 

Superhero comics are naturally just gonna repeat their core concepts over and over, and I've long said you have to pick 'your' era of a team or hero and know when that era's over and drop away gracefully. 

 

I'm not at that stage with the MCU as I like (prefer, actually) the weird, disjointed, out-there stuff that swings for the fences. It may be getting close, though 😕

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Was engaged and the 2 hours didn't drag, but no desire to watch again - not even any "big moments",

 

Really felt like it needed someone to reign in a lot of it - "less is more" can be important.

 

Felt very much like a film that the people making it had lots of fun - but that didn't translate to the viewer.

 

Bale is disturbing AF though

I didn't really get Thor's arc:

His relationship with Jane was meant to have been between Thor 1 & 2, is that right? So this baby craving he's had was meant to have been with him since then, even though his desire for peace only happens in this film? Felt a bit contrived, to say the least.

 

Also, him suddenly deciding (or being forced) into being a foster parent didn't really make much sense, let alone Gorr instantly being okay with bringing his daughter back from the dead on the off-chance that Thor wanted to play baby daddy for the rest of time.

Also, unrelated, when did he get his eye back? Have I forgotten something from another film?

 

I felt the film missed a trick in building Gorr up as a big bad - it was all tell, don't show, which meant he never really felt much of a threat. Still, he was suitably creepy when needed.

The whole thing just...existed, didn't it? I can't really say there were any memorable moments, it tried too hard to be funny all the time (though I did like the Stormbreaker jealousy) and the whole Zeus skit was 

 

I'm not sure quite what to make of it really, other than it's a disappointment 1-2 coming off the back of Dr Strange. At least Black Panther 2 looks relatively interesting!

No, between The Dark World and Ragnarok:

 

At the end of the first film, Earth is cut off from Asgard. In Avengers, Thor and Jane don't meet. They reunite in The Dark World.

 

In Age of Ultron, Thor and Stark are comparing their girlfriends' career achievements. Then in Ragnarok we find out they broke up.

I watched Doctor Strange a few weeks ago and thought it was a bit shit really. I'd seen that the reviews for Thor 4 were a bit meh so had low expectations.

 

For the first half hour or so I really did think that the multiple attempts at failed humour were missing the mark and spoiling it but then.....

Jane Thor turned up in what was one of the best "new" character intros in the MCU. Mjolnir splintering into lots of projectiles to cause chaos and then reforming with a satisfying series of clinks was awesome.

 

The film then found its feet and the jokes started working along with the action.

 

Zeus was great. I had no idea he'd be a complete tit though, I was expecting some majestic and enigmatic deity level character.

I don't understand why people have an issue with his accent, he is a Greek god after all.

 

The scene where the kids are given the power of Thor for the big fight was cheesy but massively entertaining.

 

Good to see that Jane made it to Valhalla and so did Heimdall.

 

Basically, I loved the cheesiness and came out of the cinema smiling. It got off to a bad start but absolutely redeemed itself after a short while.

 

One weird thing though:

The day time scene after the night time fight where Jane Thor is introduced, the one where Thor & Jane are first talking about their relationship.

 

Both of their faces were proper weirdly CGI'd. Not just smoothed out but almost as if the studio had badly superimposed their faces onto another actor, like that AA advert from a few years ago where the kid sings Proud Mary.

It was weird. The camera was on Natalie Portman and it looked like some instagram filter was turned up to the max, but then the shot changed to Hemsworth and it was just as bad, if not worse. I asked my Mrs if it was just me and she thought it was bizarre too.

I don't remember any visual issues with the scene you're talking about, but there was one soon after that where I thought some of the effects looked weird:

The scene where they're walking together through Omnipotence City, towards the camera. I can't remember exactly what it was that looked off, just that I noted that something about the effects was distracting me - I think it might have been Jane's mask.

Yeah, that scene has an entirely CG'd mask which looks strange — before it dissolves and you realise why it was. Seems a weird choice to do it for a long tracking shot, but I suppose the live-action cartoon feel that these recent Thor films has makes me give it leeway.

Yep- caught that straight away too. No clue as to why they did that- my theory is that they originally filmed the scene wearing actual prop helmets- and then CGi'd their faces on later. Not sure why they didn't just reshoot the scene.

Totally with you on this. I noticed it too and it was very off putting, like overly done and very amatuer looking skin smoothing. Thankfully it didn't seem as noticable through out the rest of the film.

And it's still a stinking pile of shit. I got as far the Sif scene before turning it off tonight. It's all acted like the plays that ape the movies. This is easily the worst film in the MCU, its worse than Iron Man 3.

I’m a comics fan first but I mostly love the MCU and genuinely enjoyed Ragnarok for all its comedy leanings. This though, is toss. Hemsworth (or maybe it’s all Waititi) has turned Thor into a full-on buffoon. It feels like Waititi has nothing but contempt for the whole thing. Bale was great but he is the only redeeming thing out of the whole exercise. 
 

I’ve been watching them all in order again to coincide with Marvel Calls and watched Winter Soldier last night. This film is barely a clagnut on Steve Rogers arse. 
 

@Thor don’t diss IM3, it’s a masterpiece compared to this. Way better than I remember. Downey Jr drips with charisma Hemsworth can only dream of.
