Just watched the alien movies again and feel in the mood for an alien game... I only remember playing Alien vs Predator and being shit scared by it, is the second one better?

(there's a Alien vs Predator movie trailer and special at apple trailers site)

First one was miles better. More or less instant death lurking round every corner, a soundtrack that reminded you of it, and enemies who not only appeared in different places each time you played, but were capable of using the environment to their own advantage.

Second was disappointing, scripted and a half-life rip off.

I just installed the first one and am very underwhelmed after hearing from so many people that it was a better game. AvP2 is definitely not a brilliant game, but from what I can tell, it's FAR more atmospheric and creepy - the early Marine missions are the only ones worth playing, but they're really good; the first level where you don't even see an alien or a Predator, but just hints of them, then the nextlevel where the shit hits the fan and you're running for your life... and the next level where you're doing the exat same thing, but on a 10x scale! After those missions it becomes much worse, but for what it's worth it's not too bad (they even got some good "My door ain't working!" tension going).

Maybe I'm just dissapointed because AvP wont run properly on my PC (damn stupid glitching audio!) and because it looks much worse than I was expecting after the generally rather convincing graphics and design of AvP2. Also, that guy who talks to you over the intercom is stupid. STUPID.

Oh yea, the engine tht AvP2 runs on makes me feel dizzy, anyone else get that?

Edit - I bought the Xplosiv release of AvP, does anyone know how to get the audio disk to work? I stick in the CD, but the music doesn't play.

Trying to take on an Alien in AR on the PSone was a nightmare - if you had only a pistol. The fuckers scared the crap out of me.

Same with the face-huggers. They were brilliantly done, scuttling along, if they got you you were as good as dead (unless you knew where the remover thingy was).

Must play that again soon.

I've only really played the second. I enjoyed it. Some nice scary bits.

The original AvP is not compatible with XP, so forget about it if you are running XP. I kinda managed to get it running about half the time, but even then it farked up if you tried to go to the menu or skip a cutscene. From what I've heard from others, I did very well to even get it running that well.

What about all that backwards compatibility crap that was hyped on XP's release? I heard you could run stuff in backwards compatibility mode so the application could think you were running Windows 95 or 98?

AvP 1 sounds more like my thing :)

AvP 1 is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better for me.

Marine game, normal difficulty, in the dark, on 5.1, LOUD!! mmmmmmmmm

If you dont get scared I'll give you £100 (crosses fingers)

The first one seemed a lot more of a 'game' to me. I know that sounds stupid perhaps, but I just enjoyed learning how the game worked, etc. One example; as a Marine, you progress through levels, aliens occasionally attack you. But the thing is, there are a set amount of aliens per level, but they can appear anywhere. This became especially cool once I discovered that the aliens are attracted to you, the more sound you make. It makes the levels different nearly every time! Cracking game. Great fun on LAN too, my mates and I used to play 6 player with one person as Alien/Pred (on the 'Tag' mode, where the killer of the alien/pred becomes the alien/pred) the others all marines. I used to just love hiding as the alien for aaaaaaaaages, then popping out and getting a tail kill.

Actually, what a bloody great game it was :) damn XP not running it and all that shite!

Weird. The Aliens in AvP1 respawned like there was no tomorrow when I played it. Put me right off. Same with System Shock 2.

Hmmm maybe I am mistaken then. Like your name says: meh!

I'm sure there were a set amount, but then again, I did play this in my first year of uni (4 yrs ago) and I smoked a LOT of skunk then :)

..actually I STILL smoke a lot..shit!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they respawned indefinitely if you hung out around the air ducts.

They were sooo fast..

Just about everything in that game was done so incredibly well - the Alien scared the shit out of you because it was insanely fast and if it got near you, you would die - the Predator scared you because it was so damn imposing and if it unleashed the fury on you, you would die - the Marines didn't scare you because you could fuck them up beyond all repair, as long as you were careful - if you weren't careful, you would die.

So, so well balanced.

To be honest I've never played more than one level on AvP2 - my PC ain't upto it.. :)

Anyone willing to send me a "backup" copy of AvP :)

I can't find a demo or copy for sale anywhere and seeing as AvP2 is £7 new i wouldn't expect the makers of avp to go mental over me pirating their games. arr.

I've got CD one (the game CD) of the original release if you'd like a "24 hour test copy" :P of it?

I loved AvsP 1, though mainly it was the Marine missions which did it for me. Apparently AvsP 2 is still good, but the Marine's the only good bit, the other characters aren't supposed to be quite as good.

I knew the first would be great after the 1 level demo they put out where you were the marine. Unfortunately that turned out to be the best level in the whole game, but it's still excellent. I remember it taking me days of trying to get to the end of it (I think it automatically was on Hard mode), and you had no saves either - terrifying stuff!

And the survey said... EEEG-EEH! Runs fine on mine. Reboot after installing and set compatibility to 98. And turn off cutscenes. And remember to hit ESC while loading to skip the intro. No bother.

AvP is miles better than AvP2. The aliens are like aliens, and run about jumping off walls until they catch you, unlike in the second. The human AI is fantastic in the first, and the damagable environments, and the deformable explosions, and the ultra-detatchable bodies. Turning on slo-mo and picking the bugs apart bit-by-bit is great fun. You can even shoot their double-jaw out.

AvP2? Naw. It's, somehow, both technologically and design-wise, inferior to the original.

How do the PC versions of AvP compare to the Jaguar version? I've not played any of them you understand, I'm just interested.

Oh, and has anyone played that AvP RTS on the Xbox? Is it just me, or is that the least appealing game ever?

AvP Gold Edition is available for a FIVER on the Xplosiv label.

Dixons and PC World seem to have at least one copy on a carousel whenever I go in. Which is not very often, I admit.

The Jaguar version was pretty much destroyed by the worst save system of all time. Any aliens you killed would come back to life when you loaded your game.

AvP on the PC is rather good, if you can put up with the fucking respawning. The aliens are bastard terrifying.

I remember playing AvP on the Jaguar when Game, formerly Electronics Boutique, formerly Future Zone had a Jag set up alongside all the other consoles of the time (Jaguar, Philips CDi, Megadrive, Playstation I think it was). It was a completely different game really as far as I can recall - PC AvP is fully 3D, Jag AvP had 2D sprite-based enemies, etc.

Plays in a similar way, though. It's a shame about the save thing, as it was a pretty bloody good game, and looked simply gorgeous. Even up close, the sprites were clear as day.
