I got the De10 board from mouser. I got all the rest of the boards, memory etc from https://misterfpga.co.uk/

Very good quality boards and components and quick delivery with good prices.

Same. I didn't even get stung UK > NL because I only ordered "PCBs and cables" worth €20...

The DE10 arrived from the US just fine. It took around 10 days though.

Ordered mine from Digi-Key just now as they seemed about £10 cheaper than Mouser (£118 with the VAT and shipping).

What extras are recommended?

I'm just going to use HDMI for now, so won't actually get the MiSTer board.

Does the DE10 need a fan and heatsink on its own?

Was thinking a USB hub for all the controllers. The SDRAM seems essential too and a good old UK plug adapter (doesn't need to be stepdown does it?).

Pretty sure it comes with an SD card already. Am I missing anything?

The heat sink & fan are considered essential, definitely get those. If you're not intending on getting the i/o board then you'll also need a mounting plate for the fan. The 128MB SDRAM is also essential. A USB hub is also essential, but it's up to you whether you get the official USB hub for the MiSTer or a cheap hub from Amazon. There's a few more details on a post I made earlier here.

This is quite a handy reference guide for actually using the cores in Mister.

https://github.com/adreeve/MiSTerManual/

Quote

The purpose of the guide is to provide some basic info as to how to better use each device that MiSTer has a core for. Often I found myself floundering about trying to figure out how load a program on one of the computer cores or why a given video game console didn’t do what I was hoping. This information is all available somewhere on the internet, but the goal is to consolidate it all and provide a starting point in a single guide that you can keep handily with your MiSTer device. This can be a slippery slope as to how much to include.

The goal of this guide is not to:

a)     Help with core set up which may include obtaining some firmware (a ROM BIOS image). That should all be part of the core’s most basic documentation.

b)     Finding software.

The goal of this guide is to:

Describe and show what the system physically looked like and how some of the core’s simulated peripherals worked. For example, for all of the computer cores the first thing I provide is a picture of the keyboard. Often simulation means a button is a button so a PC keyboard used with MiSTer isn’t going to be an exact match for System X’s keyboard. There will be some mapping where this key on a PC keyboard translates to that key on System X’s keyboard. Some systems added ‘auto type’ keywords that were printed on their keyboard, others had shortcuts to graphic symbols, and I think it’d be nice to know how to use those. Some game consoles had keypads and even keyboards. What controls (keyboard, gamepad, mouse…) would one have sitting in front of them had they just gotten this system on Christmas day and were opening it for the first time…

Unfortunately it looks like misteraddons has had enough of the hoops to go through to be able to do the VAT thing.  So unless he starts sell via Amazon or eBay (who I then believe are responsible for doing the VAT stuff) then it’ll have to be a proxy service to get his aluminium case :-(

@watusiThanks for that guide, not seen this before.

I wonder if @Dr_Davewould be willing to update the original post with all of this newer information?

My handy tip for the day shamelessly stolen from RetroRGB. Although I've been using SSH with MiSTer for quite a while I just never thought to create a batch file to make it a "one click" solution rather than typing and navigating my way through the MiSTer with Windows command prompt.

Assuming you can SSH into your MiSTer over your network this little file makes updating your MiSTer easy without having to be at the MiSTer screen. Just open up notepad, copy the text below (EDIT IN YOUR MISTER'S IP ADDRESS), save as a ".bat" file. You can now run the update_all script from your PC. I understand this could be helpful for crt users. The observant among you will notice that in my video below  I have a slightly different path to the update_all script (custom setup and wotnot!), your path will almost certainly be what you see in the code box below.

ssh root@YOUR_MISTER_IP HERE "cd /media/fat/Scripts; ./update_all.sh"
pause

@mmmonkeyIt's a real shame for Porkchop Express & misteraddons, he's a good fella and done so much for the community. He started the VAT registration process over 6 months ago & they kept asking him for further information. I'm not surprised he's given up. I don't know how true this is but I thought I had seen something about "8bitmods" possibly stepping in to handle American made MiSTer (and possibly other USA based retro gaming hardware / mod boards for various platforms) for distribution in the UK. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines or am I imagining this?

Ordered the DE10-Nano and a case- going to order the rest of the parts when I get paid next week. Really wish I could get one of the aluminium cases but I suppose that'll have to wait.

That was my plan, but now I REALLY like this too much now:

I'd maybe swap around for an Astro City-themed opaque white base and transparent green (or pink) top.

I've added the link to the MiSTer Manual to the first post.

And your tip for updating by a batch file is great!

Something else I've seen today is that one of the MiSTer Discord denizens has put together an "attract mode" script that has the MiSTer cycle through games at random: https://github.com/mrchrisster/attract_mode

I haven't tried it myself, but it sounds like the perfect solution for creating a games room conversation piece.

I'm having a weird issue with my MiSTer after doing a reinstall of everything and using the update script with a small selection of cores.

All is well, apart from configuring controller inputs

I'm using an 8BitDo reveiver as I was before. I've ensured it still works connected to a computer but on the input config screen, no buttons register. Other USB devices are connected to the MiSTer USB board like WIFI and a keyboard dongle.

I even pulled config/inputs dir from my old install to test that.

I would roll back to the other image, but as it's a 128GB file, it's not something I want to do lightly!!

Any ideas?

@Colonel PanicAssuming that the 8bitdo pad in connecting to the 8bitdo receiver without issues the only thing that comes to mind at this moment is having to define the buttons in the main menu. I'm certain no buttons register unless you've done this step ..... press F12 on a keyboard while on the  main menu & you should see "remap keyboard, define joystick buttons, scripts" options. Try running through the define joystick buttons if you haven't already.

Yeah, connecting without issues to the receiver. If I go into the "define joystick buttons" section, pressing buttons doesn't have an effect. I tried with a USB controller and it did work, however.

Hnnnngggggg! This literally worked fine yesterday. I'll see if I can get into the Linux side of things tomorrow and check that the receiver is being detected there.

Nothing else is immediately coming to mind. I use a SN30 Pro+ via a standard bluetooth dongle and not with one of 8bitdo's own dongles.  On the rare occasion where I've had something like this happen I've been able to resync with the F11 pairing option / bluetooth pairing script. I don't think that's going to work in this case though. No harm in trying though!

Linux can have the tendency to remap usb devices on boot (they typically get added to /dev under ttyACMx or ttyUSBx, where x is an incremental number). If that reference is hardcoded somewhere that could be causing a problem. You can set a fixed reference, although I can't remember how to do it, google will sort you out though.

Goddammit, I restored the original image and the controller is working via the receiver.

I'll try the new image again and see what's happening, but it's definitely something that's happened between the old image I have and the current version.

If all else fails, I can stay on an older Linux version as long as the cores don't give a crap!

So, I found this curiosity and thought I would post it here. Someone incredibly talented people have created a special THREE PLAYER version of Final Fight that is actually designed to work on real CPS hardware, called Final Fight Anniversary

That git hub page has mra core for it to work on the MiSTer. You will need to locate a version of the Fight Fight rom to patch. For some reason, the one that gets downloaded by the update_all script won't work, as its missing some files(?). I downloaded just the one ROM file from torrent file on internet archive and patched that. You'll also need to install java for the installer to run. Also, (finally) don't try and patch the rom file in a directory path that has any spaces, as the patcher doesn't like that. Once patched, drop the mra file into the _Arcade folder on your Mister, and pop the rom inside your games/mame/ directory and you are good to go.

The game is three player, and allows you to play the same character, so everyone can play guy. You can also swap colour palettes on the selection screen, so that you all look different. Can't wait to try this out with friends, once we can all actually meet people again!

Someone made a cab.
