Sorry if this has come up a thousand times...but what's the general consensus on best all round controller? Have used a SNES replica 8bitdo wired and wireless and seems to do a good job. I know you can get adaptors to enable original hardware but then do you need individual adaptors for each controller? Playing Sonic with a 'snes' controller feels a bit...dirty.

I've found that I need two controllers: an 8bitdo Pro 2 for SNES layout games (and PSX now) and a Retro-bit 6 button megadrive/saturn pad for MD layout games (and Saturn ultimately). It just doesn't feel right having the diamond layout for MD games. I've also found that I don't massively care about BT vs 2.4GHz - there are latency effects in my aging reflexes that far outshadow any technological limitations. So I've managed to get rid of a wide array of dongles.

This. I’ve boxed up my 8bitdo sfc30 and elecom classic controller adapter in lieu of this. 
 

I don’t play much mega drive but when I do it’s the retrobit usb mega drive controller. 
 

@Das look up the daemon bite triple adapter by timville. It uses an arduino as a controller adapter and takes snes, nes and mega drive originals. Latency is about a ms apparently.

I looked and it was about 30usd for the kit and shipping. It’s all open source so you could build it all yourself. 
 

I’ve been toying with getting an arduino pro and just making a two snes port deamonbite.  
 

try this link https://github.com/timville85/DaemonBite-Retro-Controllers-USB and you can make some simpler cables just using an arduino and a cable extension.

SNAC if you want lagless single-player purism at the cost of inconvenience. Arduino/Deamonbite if you can be arsed.

 

Otherwise RaphNet make the best off-the-shelf adapters for your OEM controllers.

 

Wireless protocol latency compounded with LCD tech is definitely perceptible when you directly compare with wired pads on a CRT.

I have far too many controllers

 

SNES - Buffalo wired, 8BitDo, Nintendo Switch version 

Megadrive - 8bitdo M30 and Retrobit bluetooth

Saturn - Retrobit bluetooth and 2.4G

N64 - Retrobit wireless pad

PcEngine - 8BitDO one

 

Sticks - Hori fighting Edge, Dacon Naija, 8BitDo Arcade Stick

 

and Xbox, PS4, 8BitDo Pro 2

 

I love them all! I just like having a pad that is close to the original system I'm emulating.

I also have it and recommend. 
 

my controllers:

psx classic - main controller

retrobit mega drive 6 button blue

pc engine mini 

8bitdo sfc30

snes classic with elecom adapter 

wii classic pro with above adapter 

really cheap snes usb clone (which isn’t actually that bad)

emio snes classic with adapter (does snes classic controller to usb)

play sega usb saturn controller in official mk2 pad shell

 

i think that’s enough. Mainly I only use the psx classic controller.

An average measured latency of 1.010ms, providing a 93.94% same frame input probability. That's pretty grand.
