Obi-Wan Series - Friday 27th May

While the new episode maintained elements of absolute stupidity from certain characters at times it had what the first 2 episodes lacked. That feeling. Where what once made Star Wars so magical is re-captured and you’re a kid again cheering at the TV. It still has a way to go to hit the heights that we are entitled to expect from it, but fuck me that was good!

Loving Ewans performance in this. A broken man, haunted by guilt at failing his friend.

Spoiler

They've made Vader such a terrifying figure. I know you don't hear his voice obviously, but just knowing that Hayden Christensen is behind the mask actually adds something to the performance too. Especially as I had just come off rewatching the prequels.

It was lighter than the last episode, but yeah, still dark in places. Though not as bad as Moon Knight.

Seems to be every Disney+ show with the same problem. And no, I won't be messing around with TV settings when every other streaming service has better lighting. Had zero issues with Stranger Things IV for example.

Spoiler

It's getting good. Much better than the last episode.

The interaction between Obi-Wan and Leia felt more natural and the parts about him seeing her mother's face in hers and semi-remembering having a brother were quite moving and built some back story without going down the whole "How did Han Solo get his name?" heavy handed route.

Leia's character was fiercely independent in the first episode and a bit annoying in the second. This time she was just Leia (that's a compliment by the way).

It's always good to see Vader and the voice was pitch perfect. As others have said, Rogue One always sounded a bit off but this time James Earl Jones and the sound crew at Disney nailed it.

I don't get the hate for Reva. I don't just mean the racist misogynists but even some normal people seem to have an issue with the character or her acting skills. She's doing a good job with the script she's given and is building slowly into being a real piece of work. If there's eventually a redemption arc then it might be cliched and predictable but hey, that's definitely in the spirit of Star Wars.

I thought it was poor again.

When Vader showed up and Obi sent Leia and the other woman down the single tunnel…

Spoiler

After Reva showed up and headed down the tunnel, why didn’t she pass the resistance woman who was heading back to help Obi? Also, by the end, how did Reva manage to get in front of Leia in a single file tunnel?

It just feel so amateurish in its direction and really small in scale, which I presume is a limitation of the stage they shoot it on.

Yet another Star Wars dud for me unfortunately.

I enjoyed it, again.

Still not sure about

Spoiler

Obi Wan v Vader but then Vader never did finish his "a presence I haven't felt since..." line

I don't have any problems with Leia, my middle daughter's a similar age and she swings wildly between being a know it all, independent, sentimental and a whole bunch of other things. Though the actresses performance does remind me a little of Matilda (who could have been a Jedi!)

It's fucking ridiculous though that the Star Wars fanbase can be so disgusting to Moses Ingram and Kelly Mary Tran but then be all "how dare they sack Gina Carano"

It’s fucking brilliant and I’m really glad they bothered. A few little plot holes and contrivances from time to time but the FEEL of it, man! It feels like Star Wars!

I really do feel like if A New Hope came out today it’d be absolutely ripped to shreds by the internet. Shonky acting, dodgy dialogue, most of the first half an hour is just droids walking about…

I bloody love Obi Wan Kenobi and I can’t really believe I’m saying that.

Yep, Star Wars "fans" have no fucking idea what they want, other than to find something to be angry at.

This is unbelievably shoddy as a finished product. So many editing and framing oddities which should never have made the final cut. I’m not sure that cheap is the right word, rushed or unfinished might be more accurate.

Little Leia is fine, I’m not very keen on Moses Ingram but I think all the other bad guys are equally rubbish and it’s mostly due to writing and direction on set.

This always bothered me - why did R2D2 claim to be Obi Wan's property?  Is it just because he's a mad wee radge who'll lie to get what he wants?

From the first two episodes it looks Obi-Wan buried R2 outside his cave on Tatooine and used him as a security scanner.

I dare say Gina Carano’s “one of theirs” though, I’m many cases.

Spoiler

Otherwise can’t believe how bent out of shape people are about a perfectly fine character played in a perfectly fine way (albeit whose arc seems obvious af), when the show’s riddled with basic errors, great and small, in plot. How does Obi Wan go straight to the right planet and the right place to find Leia, for example?  Why is Darth Vader powerless because he’s next to a puddle of flame?  Go around the laser gate.

Still think it’s good and watchable overall though.  Innocuous, knockabout nonsense, as Star Wars always has been.

Laser roadblock good: Stormtrooper slice and dice.

Laser roadblock Bad: Obi-wan tries to find a way to turn it off instead of just walking through the big gap behind the hut.

Don’t forget the egregiously unsubtle use of the Wilhelm scream. Overall, it’s just lazily written, first-draft-will-do, amateurish wank.

The internet being a hive of cunts strikes again. Criticism of acting abilities can be cruel, but constructive, but then this kind of thing….

We're passed the point where you have to wonder why some people watch Star Wars if they know it's just going to upset them.

Have you never seen any Star Wars before?

Of course, it just felt desperate here. He fell six feet.

Also, while I’m pointing out how shit this is (‘enjoying finding fault’ in something people like), how totally unthreatening are the entire inquisitors? Just naff, moaning sith-lite bellends. Especially ‘Hissy guy’.

Oh and I know Kenobi is a bit of a poor Jedi master, but he’s comically inept in this at times. And there’s far too much fearfulness in Ewan’s performance once a certain character comes on the scene. Maybe Ben’s on the path to the dark side (fear-anger-hate etc), but all the shitting-himself-in-a-quarry was so overdone.

I’m glad people are digging it, but for me it needs a serious uplift in quality in every department. If and when it gets good, I’ll praise it to the heavens.

Right now, it’s miles off, though I’ll admit baby Yoda, sorry, Leia is fun, so there’s that.

This is from a camera that is COMPLETELY STATIONARY.

This GIF cuts out the best part - the same camera is completely locked off for the first half of that scene. There's no cut from tripod to handheld or anything, you just get a camera on a tripod that someone suddenly starts vigorously shaking.

(The cinematographer on this is a first-rate talent who's done some stuff I've really loved, I'm really not sure what happened here.)
