The Trip (2021) (Netflix)

Starring Noomi Rapace and Norwegian Bill Burr, it's a comedy horror home invasion type thing, with a good final third if you enjoy gore. The tone is comedic, so it's not scary at all. And I think if Noomi Rapace wasn't in it, I'd probably rate it lower. She tends to elevate whatever she's in.

3½ out of 5

Is the one with their relationship breaking down and then shit goes places. Literally!

I loved it tbh laughed a lot.

Deep Water
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2180339/

A well-to-do husband who allows his wife to have affairs in order to avoid a divorce becomes a prime suspect in the disappearance of her lovers.

Did you ever watch a film and wonder how it came to exist? Like, what was the thought process behind this thing being made? Because that was what i was asking myself every few minutes watching this turkey. An "erotic thriller" that's about as erotic and thrilling as an episode of One Foot in The Grave.

Ben Afflec and Ana De Armis are married but their marriage is pretty much over. Ana is having affairs with loads of other men who all turn up dead shortly after - Afflec likes to joke that he's killing them! Hahahaha, what a cad. The cops don't seem to care, no one in the town they live in is too worried that bodies keep turning up and everything plays out in the most predictable way possible and there isn't a single scene of any merit.

It's directed by Adrian Lyne who made some great films in the past and the screenplay was by Sam Levine who wrote Euphoria - so it's not some amateurs having their first go with a camera. It's mind-blowing that talented people can make something as bad as this, that fails on every level.

1/5 - I don't think I'd ever give a film 0 but this as close to 0 as it's possible to get. Utter rubbish.

Widows (Netflix)

A great cast and interesting concept but it didn’t quite land for me. Lots of connections and intricacies don’t really go anywhere and the end is just a bit flat.  It does have a good noir vibe to it though and it’s entertaining enough. Heist movies just need a bit more heist though.

Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (Netflix)

This is a stunning looking film, with amazing cinematography and direction and incredible set pieces. But everything in between those is just overlong and self-indulgent. At least an hour too long.

Same review from me. It sounded great when I saw heist in the synopsis, but it was severely lacking (and not in an interesting take way)

Blonde (Netflix)

This was dreadful in every respect. I really don't understand how the director of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford can then make that and then nothing else of value since. Even Ana de Armas couldn't save this, and she should be/is perfect for Marilyn in a good film.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane - Prime

A film with a reputation I’ve known about for a long time but have only just watched. Jodie Foster gives the most amazing performance as self assured 13 year old girl, Rynn, living for all intents and purposes, an adult life. Every so often she lets the mask slip slightly, and you see the vulnerability of a child underneath - especially around the brilliantly creepy and manic Martin Sheen. There was some controversy around the nude scene. Although her older sister acted as a body double, it doesn’t need to be in the film at all. There’s a little bit of unnecessary animal cruelty in there as well. Still, both those things serve to make an already uncomfortable thriller even more so, I s’pose. I thought it was brilliant. Foster was incredibly convincing.

The hamster they used was dead, but still, it’s not pleasant.

Scream 5

Thought I would catch up on this as I found myself intrigued by the Scream6 trailer. Wasn’t expecting it to be so gruesome/brutal. Got caught up in the ‘who is it?’ drama too. Lots of cringe but it mostly feels self aware (apart from Cox’s character). Better than I expected.

Babylon

Not sold on the ending completely working, but this has so many great set piece scenes that I got pretty lost in it for most of its overlong runtime. Fantastic cinema experience.

I concur. For 2.5 hours I was loving it and then Yeah the last 30 mins dragged a bit and a couple of times I thought “ ok end now, that’s the best end point… but ..

Spoiler

I guess we needed to see manny going back to see singin in the rain, and the montage of progression.. but I could have done with out the psychedelic craziness

On the whole though like you say the set pieces and are just fantastic.

Spoiler

The whole bit leading up to the butterfly :D

I keep seeing Babylon mentioned lately…I presume this is not the amazing 1980s Brit reggae flick starring Brinsley Forde of Aswad and Double Deckers fame (and is on Netflix)?

Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal (2001)

Proper mess of a film, fin in places but it's so all over the place it's difficult to get with the vibe of it. Essentially a metal band (industrial metal, strictly speaking) do a gig on a plane that's being live-streamed, it gets ... well, saying it's attacked by terrorists is a stretch, just another mis-hit. It sets up nicely, and the ending section is a good take on the old Airport talking-them-down cliche. The rest just felt like it was made up as it went, plus there's so much stupidity on show here. I have to say I was recovering with the flu whilst watching this, and maybe I wasn't totally up to PARTY like the people on board.

Grim. Very bloody grim. Not much else I can say.

Amsterdam -3/5

Enjoyed this. I know it got mixed reviews but I thought it was fun with some good performances. Christian Bale was absolutely brilliant and honestly I think it may be his best performance. I want to see him do more comedic roles.

Bank of Dave - 2/5

Dull, simple, feel good twee shite.

Watched a couple of Disney oldies over the past couple of nights:

Tron

I actually watched this after reading about it in an old (2010!) GamesTM bookazine (that I'm only now reading for the first time). I'd seen the film many years ago and remembered the main plot, but man, it's an odd film. Reading the article made the point that it was meant to be even more technical, but the result we got was hard enough to parse as it was. The opening scenes, all set inside a computer, make no real sense - how could a program understand what a 'User' was, or what a 'game' was? That aside, it hasn't aged well. I don't mean in terms of the effects - I think that neon line style is still quite pleasant on the eye - but the script is really bad, most of the acting is pretty poor (David Warner aside) and the story is just guff. Clearly the cult following it has is more to do with the themes and ideas it espoused than the quality on display.

The Black Hole

When I was looking for Tron on Disney, it made me then think about another I remember as a kid - The Black Hole. Again, I remembered the main story beats but missed some of the details so it retained an element of freshness. Bizarrely I do remember having both Vincent and Maximillian figures as a kid; I don't know how, they must've been inherited as I didn't even see the film until the mid-80s, but there you go.

Anyway, this was much, much better. The acting at times is still pretty hammy, the effects a bit ropey (every gunfight is very wooden) - but the central premise is still excellent, and Maximillian in particular is still a great, imposing and unsettling character. This film without question taps into that fascination with space, massive, derelict/empty/mysterious starships (I've watched Passengers a few times because I really love the sense of scale in particular). We really go on that journey of discovery with the crew and although the end is a bit weird, this is all about the journey, not the destination.

Licorice Pizza (currently on Prime)

Intrigued by the mostly 5-star reviews, and fancying a Saturday night love story set in the 1970s west coast, me and my partner were looking forward to this.

Bloody hell, hardly anything happens, and you just don’t care when it does. It’s nicely shot, and the two main actors can clearly act, but neither of the characters are very likeable, and I’m just baffled that their relationship barely develops over TWO AND A HALF HOURS.

Plus the whole “she’s 25 and he’s 15” thing just makes it plain creepy, so you’re not exactly dying for them to get together, you just hope she comes to her senses.

An odd film where I’m just baffled at the adoration.

Evil Dead

I can see why this was influential but God is it bad. My favourite bit was when Bruce Campbell stayed sat in his chair while his friend was getting attacked 2 yards away. And the acting generally is diabolical.

That said, some of the effects are well done and there’s some decent gore. The soundtrack is cool.

I was hoping for more because Drag Me To Hell is one of my favourite horrors in recent years.

I’m probably committing about 12 atrocities in this post but I really thought it was quite shit.

It Felt Like Love
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2328922/

Lila wants to emulate the sexual exploits of her more experienced best friend. She fixates on a tough older guy who will "sleep with anyone" and tries to insert herself into his world, putting herself in a dangerously vulnerable situation.

This is a low-budget coming of age film set over a summer in Brooklyn. It follows two 14 year old girls as they hang out at the beach, start meeting boys and start getting a bit more independence. It covers pretty familiar territory but takes a fairly dark swerve near the end.

I thought this was really good. The young cast are very natural and believable. And there's a nice shabbyness to the locations. I'm a big fan of these films where it's just people hanging out and chatting.

This was Eliza Hittmans first film and she's gone onto much better things - Beach Rats and Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Often. You can see a lot of NRSO in this film - there's a scene in a doctors office that's very similar and both films are about how much grief young girls get from fellas at all times in their day to day life.

3/5 - A strong debut from a really good director. Watched on MUBI - Beach Rats is also on there which is highly recommended.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

So me and my son are up to Star Wars 3.

Even with the "teddy bear things" and the weird addition of a musical number in Jabba's palace, this was actually pretty good. I think somewhat buoyed by it being all action, especially compared to Empire Strikes Back. And all that action is pretty good. Useless Stormtroopers and all.

There's only a small quibble about the Solo rescue being reliant on a whole load of coincidence and factors way out of the heroes' control. And there was a bit of "that's convenient" about the whole Endor ground battle thing. But it was all loads of fun to watch.

4/5. Best of the originals.

Can't decide whether to go with Rogue One next, or straight on to Star Wars 4: Episode VII.

Watch them in release order. Technically you want to go to the prequals now. But that's like death by a thousand cuts.

So personally I'd watch rogue one then andor and the the Mandalorian and tell your son they never made any more.  Spare him the pain.

I couldn’t disagree more, I think it’s great, but let’s face it, we all have stuff we don’t like that everybody else seems to love. For example, I finally got round to watching ‘Don’t Look Now’ about 6 months ago and thought it was awful, and it’s often held up as a horror/thriller masterpiece.

Babylon

So this makes Damien Chazelle continue his run of four for four successes in terms of major films. He sure knows how to edit together a montage and set it to great music. This was Hail, Caesar! merged with The Wolf of Wall street. It did seem to be trying a bit too hard in places to be shocking and out do the latter, such as

Spoiler

The elephant shitting and Margot vomiting were straight from Little Britain from 2003.

I felt like it did need editing down a bit, and in some sections that had direct parallels in Hail, Caesar the Coen's showed a bit more restraint and subtlety could work better (and also they are just plain better at dark comedy)

I wasn't sure if there was a specific meaning behind including some of the melodies from La La Land in certain scenes. Is it a Damien Chazelle cinematic universe, linking the two films, or just 'lazy' composer reusing a good tune.

4/5 (but reading it back maybe between a 3 and 4)

TC 2000

Early 90s martial arts guff where humans live underground due to a man made disaster. Something something " surface world"  . Budget of probably $10 this has a load of martial artists who were bit part players in Bloodsport and various other B grade movies around that time but does have Bolo Yeung and Billy Blanks. It's as cheap as can be and looks like it was shot on location in a chemical Factory at night after the staff went home to save on costs. The acting is abysmal , the plot nonsensical and it borrows liberally from a lot of other , better movies, specifically Terminator. There's obvious  poor dubbing where actors with limited English are required to give anything more than a yes or no answer.blanks probably should have been dubbed too.

Despite all that some of the fights are pretty good and it's hard not to appreciate the skill of all the martial artists involved, some of the fights in the background or by bit part folk are wonderfully choreographed and superbly athletic and the main guys do good work on that front.

My wife came in half way through and looked at me like I was insane after watching a few minutes, little does she know I'm planning on watching a heap of these daft c grade movies over the next year.

Anyway 3/5 for the fights and the rest of it being barely above children's pantomime quality of acting, which has a charm of its own for about an hour of the 90 minutes  and sure by that stage you're committed.

Have you seen Evil Dead 2? Highly recommend you watch it if not, it's much much better.

I'm with you to be honest, the original's always seemed pretty ropey to me - although I watched the sequel first, which may have something to do with it.
