The Fablemans - 2/5

If you can make it through Michelle Williams (and some others) being irritating as hell and having the most insane overacting performance in decades then you deserve a medal.

I received my medal.

The Straight Story

I'd honestly thought I'd seen this before, but apparently not. I think I would have remembered a film that left me teary eyed for nearly two hours.

People seem to talk about this film as if it's not very "Lynchian". I think that works if you only think of Lynch for his weirdness and darker flights of fancy. But I would argue it's one of his most intimate films, because what Lynch is actually all about is his overwhelming compassion and empathy for people and the world, and this film is for me Lynch showing some of the most heartwarming of that humanity he has ever put on screen.

Currently 94% on rotten tomatoes. The fuck are these cunts smoking?

It’s unbelievably predictable. Doesn’t even have decent gore.

Eyes Wide Shut - 4/5

First watch. It's supposed to be a comedy, right? Tom gets the hump after his wife tells him she once quite fancied some guy she saw in a hotel so he immediately rushes out to revenge fuck a stranger but is so shit at it that he ends up in a conspiracy thriller by mistake? It's an Albert Brooks film with a lick of paint.

That’s an amazing top 20 except I’ve never even heard of Angels Egg. I’m assuming it’s reasonably obscure.

I never understand the praise for Williams. I find her stilted and wooden in everything.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

I’d never seen this film before but felt like I had to watch it as it’s considered one of the greatest horror films of all time. It’s a pretty short film by today’s standards but I couldn’t wait for it to finish, it’s just so unbearably grim and disturbing from the opening scene and throughout the entire movie. I hated it but at the same time thought it was brilliant and I can’t imagine any film being more terrifying.

Wild Tales 5/5 (MUBI)

Argentina again, and people are pissed off. The petty - and not so petty - frictions of daily life are causing them to step beyond the accepted limits of social tolerance, with both brutal and frequently hilarious results.

It’s difficult to score this anything other than 5/5, even though there are plenty of flaws if you choose to focus on them. This is a superb film, and a masterful rendering of the portmanteau style. If your jaw doesn’t fall open at least once watching this, it’s probably because you’ve seen much too much of life.

Love this film. Will definitely give it a rewatch this weekend now it’s on MUBI.

Obviously her from Queen’s Gambit is the sound one, but she’s surrounded by so many jerks.

I know this thread isn't really for discussion, but I found her annoying as hell. She was there just to make fun of something people like. Pretty much the first thing she says is "don't say mouth feel", making out this is some bizarre food nerd term that should never be said around normal people, when it's a relatively common phrase if you even vaguely into food. And she continued to act like a complete petulant arsehole throughout. So I found it odd that were clearly supposed to cheer for her.

Not to stray off topic but I'm on team chess queen. "Texture" is a word that already exists and "mouth feel" is the sort of thing Boyle off Brooklyn 99 says.

At the risk of seeming a dickhead, because I unequivocally am one, I consider mouthfeel to include texture and temperature, with them both being equally important. You could even argue for piquancy outside of flavour.

Watcher - 3/5 (work screener, but also on Shudder according to JustWatch)

One of the best parts of my job is stumbling across films I've no expectations of that turn out to be thoroughly decent. This is a pared-back thriller primarily centered on the anxiety of lead character Julia, as she struggles to settle into a new life with her boyfriend in Bucharest. It doesn't do anything terrifically new, and the deliberate pacing may steer some away, but I found it really absorbing, with just enough seediness to be quietly unsettling, and a worthy sting in the tail. Or tale, if you prefer.

Burial - 5/5 (MUBI)

This is a splendid film, on the surface a documentary about the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant in Lithuania, but more a feast for the eyes and ears, a dreamy voyage through the depths of places and spaces. Reminded me of playing Control quite a bit. If any of the images in this trailer tickle your fancy, you’ll love it:

Triangle of Sadness -2.5/5

Was looking forward to this and it started off promising but just went downhill. Ultimately I was bored. I get what's it's trying to say but it's as subtle as a brick to the face.

I would agree, the tone was slightly off and what it was doing isn’t that fresh at a time when we have been watching Succession and White Lotus for a few years.

It did hit me like a ton of bricks goggling about the ending afterwards and seeing that the on of the lead actress, Charlbi Dean, died last year aged only 32.  Seemed like she had everything ahead of her and gone within a day from sepsis, after losing her spleen a decade ago after a car accident.

Airplane! (my Bluray pile of shame but I have seent he film before)

Brilliant, funny and perfect film. I needed cheering up last night and it did the trick.

I'm not going to write a potted critique of this film as I couldn't add to the millions of words already written.

The King of spoof comedy films.

Puss in Boots The Last Wish

This is great. Really good plot, full of brilliant characters, top notch voice acting and I really liked the art and animation styles (the action sequences have a slightly different style to the rest of the film).

It was just a joy to watch. Probably one of the best films, let alone kid's films, I've seen for a while.

5/5.

A couple from me:

Film #6/52: Zoolander (2001) - Prime Video

ben-stiller-badass.gif.1a998dbe7d1659b9d51a48f78fb1d6ef.gif

Man, I hadn't seen this film in years. Then I realised it's twenty-two fucking years old and had a little cry. Anyway, delightfully stupid, but I think there are probably better late-90s/early-00s Stiller flicks out there. Still, some of the lines still land. 'What's this!? A centre for ants!?' got a big laugh.

3/5

Film #7/52: Portrait of a Lady On Fire (2019) - BBC iPlayer

image.thumb.png.1b9824fce91b46ce4674a415d09cfbe4.png

This was heart-breaking but also strangely hopeful at the same time. Tremendous, understated performances from Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel in the lead roles - très érotique. Beautifully shot, too, although I'd recommend watching it on disc or a paid download, as the shitty compression on BBC iPlayer crushed a lot of the darker scenes.

American Beauty

First time watching - no particular reason other than making use of my Prime subscription. I didn't know a great deal about the film and honestly though it would be pretty dry, but the barmy personalities and the strange turns in the story give it a levity I wasn't expecting. (I had a similar experience with Fight Club, where I had different preconceptions and wasn't prepared for the humour.) I imagine people could call it out for trying too hard or whatever, but I thought it was fine.
