Reservoir Dogs

4/5

The only thing about the whole film that I really hate is Tim Roth basically bleeding to death in every scene other than the flashbacks and Tarrantino over-acting in the beginning coffee scene.  The rest of it is just immense. Michael Madson never, ever played a better role.  The music is great and, in context, it's a landmark film.  I haven't seen it in ages and I'd forgotten a lot of it.  The Hateful Eight is pretty much the same film but longer and a lot worse for it.  The run time of Reservoir Dogs is perfect.  I'm a big fan of stage drama and this is essentially a play on the screen.

I would recommend it but everyone has probably seen it.

I'm currently re-watching loads of films from my teens/early twenties.  I'm going to do one every Sunday afternoon as I am usually home alone.  Next up, True Romance (again!)

We watched both of those and Pulp fiction in August. All still brilliant.

Fight Club - 5

Don't laugh, but I watched this yesterday for the first time as I noticed it was on Amazon Prime Video.  I kind of guessed the twist beforehand because I'd been so used to people talking about other movies/games/TV shows/whatever "doing a Fight Club" but what I didn't know about was all the nifty stuff they did after that reveal. The main characters are great, and I expected a pretty po-faced thing but was surprised at how much (sometimes dark) humour was in there!

Avengers: Endgame 5/5

The perfect end to this Marvel storyline and made all the better because we watched Infinity War just before it. A brilliant two parter that couldn’t have had a better climax. Absolutely excellent stuff.

Avengers: Endgame - 5

Just to jump on the bandwagon, the film I saw three (!) times at the cinema remains a towering achievement. The only stain on the copybook is the death of Black Widow, which has terrible optics whichever angle you look at it. And that's all Perlmutter's fault. His refusal to validate women in the MCU early on, cock-blocking female character merch and warring with Kevin Feige over it meant Johansson got no solo franchise in the early days.

Her sidelining means she gets a belated film after the character's already dead, and inadvertently led to her fridging* in Endgame. I'd argue she's the one character from the original team they should 100% keep into phase 4, and as the team leader no less. They should be paying Johansson whatever she wants, sending a strong message about how Marvel value their female characters and how they can lead from the front. When is Hollywood ever gonna start doing that? Sooner rather than later, I hope.

* It's not technically a fridging, but the term feels appropriate f or this

Just out of curiosity @TheFixx, why would you give me a tear for giving Endgame 5/5?

To be fair, my little lad shed a tear again over Iron Man and that’s one of the reasons I think it’s so good. He’s been with him on this entire journey and I really think it’s something that will stay with him for life. It’s been brilliant watching him grow up with it.

Horrible bosses 3/5

I was always told this wasnt a great movie , so I never got round to watching it. However gave it a watch last night and I was pleasantly surprised. I think it sags in the middle and gets a bit too silly but I enjoyed it.  Great cast too. I'll give the second movie a watch sometime soon.

Fuck me this is easily 5/5, never hear this film being mentioned but easily one of the best King's adaption.

Don't think I've ever seen it. One of my favorite SK books too. Will have to check it out.

Pacific Rim three big robots out of a possible five big robots.

I really liked it and but for a few minor but very annoying flaws it would have scored higher.

I took one big robot off because the control interface of the big robots was terrible. Overcomplicated as fuck. Should have basically been like the power loader from Aliens.

I took another big robot off for those terrible fake Australian accents. Film budget probably over a hundred million. And you can't just find two Australian actors or alternatively just have the characters not be Australian.

Was tempted to take another big robot off for this guy:

Worst actor ever.

Yeah, the last thing you want from a strong female character is for her to have any kind of agency and for her to not be saved by the nearest bloke.

Mile 22

Mark Wahlberg action flick. Unlikeable characters, nonsensical plot, choppy editing, lots of pointless action sequences and a totally predictable twist.

I only watched it to the end cos my wife chose it, and now I can choose the next one without any complaints from her.

Prometheus 3/5

I remember how much I was looking forward to this before it came out and then it came out and I heard it was shit and didn't watch it cause I couldn't face the disappointment, and by waiting so long to watch it I have somehow multiplied the disappointment.

I was prepared now for it to just be shit, but it isn't, they had the makings of a worthy prequel to Alien in there and they fucked it. Tighten the script up a bit, cut down on the fake accents (my current major bugbear with TV and films), cut a few of the dafter bits, and undo the dumbdown at least once and this could have been great. As it is: meh.

Edit: bumping this from a 2 to 3.

Avengers: Endgame

Spoiler

A sweet ending and I liked the new Hulk/Banner and Lebowski Thor, though I didn't care for the narrative jazz hands of "magic quantum dimension time travel". It was interesting when Tony's daughter and the line about the whale population starting to recover indicated a grudging acceptance of the positive effects of Thanos' actions in the face of overwhelming loss, and I thought the conflict arising from this could've been explored more satisfyingly than it was. But by the end this was largely forgotten about and we had the usual MCU spectacle of everyone lined up against an identikit alien army and I lost interest.

I hope the MCU spins off in a radical and interesting new direction but I wouldn't bet on it.
