The Discovery

 

Robert Redford claims to have proof of the afterlife, which sets of a spree of suicides around the world.  Jason Segel seems unconvinced and decides to investigate.  Interesting idea, rather thought provoking - not sure how well they pulled it off though.  Was ok.

Paul Rudd is perfectly cast as professional crook Scott Lang who is inadvertently caught up in an experiment with awesome nuclear scientist Michael Douglas.  Great fun, a nice change of pace to the MCU.

Bachelorette

 

Maybe it's best to do a bit of research before agreeing to watch a film with your better half.  This utter guff wasted 2 hours of my life - an awful film with awful characters doing awful things that never once raised a smile.  Nope, not even the delightful sight of Isla Fisher can improve this.  It's a horrible movie - avoid at all costs.

In Bruges

 

But then I got to choose the next film!  I fucking love this movie - probably more than I love Bruges itself which is - as Ralph Fiennes so eloquently puts it - a fucking fairytale.  Voted this as my number 1 film of 2008 in the rllmuk mega poll thing for a very good reason.  it's just outstanding.

Hereditary

 

I had no idea what this film was about, despite having heard of it.  And that remained the case throughout most of the running time, but as things slowly unravel, it made more sense and I actually really enjoyed it by the end.  Creepy as fuck in places and Toni Colette is excellent.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

 

I REALLY shouldn't mark this down because it's not as good as the book.  It's a phrase I hate, but SO much stuff is cut that would have improved it massively, and I have never understood why.  Where were Merope, Morfin etc?  Such an odd exclusion, particularly when they add a scene (not a bad one, I hasten to add) that isn't in the book about 2/3rds of the way in.  By no means a bad film because I love all the HP films but when the book was so good, I did feel a bit disappointed by it.

@Boothjan I just finished reading HBP to my daughter 2 weeks ago and we watched the film after. Doing that really left a sour taste in the mouth though because it just highlights all the good stuff left out. Its my least favourite Potter film and last weekends viewing of it just compounded that. They added that scene in I think because the book lacks any action other than the fight with the Death Eaters (which they bloody left out too). Reading the books and watching the films after with my daughter has just left me wanting them to turn it into a TV show so they can show everything.

Agree with all of that.  There are some great parts in the film, particularly some aspects of the finale, and some of the comedic elements hit the right note, but the more I see it, the more it annoys me!  It's also my least favourite Potter film.

 

I think that they did a good job with The Order of the Phoenix because there's so much crap in that book that didn't need to be shown, but the opposite happens in HBP.

 

At least they saw sense with The Deathly Hallows and made it into 2 films.

The Blues Brothers (1980)

 

I loved this film as a child. Not just because its comedy genius, but because it exposed me to music i'd never heard before, and broadened my horizons!

 

The BIG name cameos/talent on display are just perfect and utterly of their time. Imagine trying to do that now with current artists. Who can possibly compare? No one!

 

This movie is and was a comedic portal into Rhythm & Blues at its finest. 

 

I've not seen it in maybe 20 years, but yesterday's viewing brought back the innocent child in me. It's brilliant on so many levels, and the ludicrousness is what makes it stand out. Carrie Fisher. Curl Up & Dye. The Flamethrower M-79 manual. Too many things to remember!

 

Utterly perfect. And from a technical standpoint, still the best extended car chase with the most amount of cars ruined in history (fact). In a comedy! Imagine trying to sell that to a studio exec now? 

 

I'm still dumbfounded that it got made. The hundreds of extras towards the end as they "Hut-hut-hut-hut" on the Municipal Building, is way OTT, the kind we don't see anymore. CG ruined all that.

 

So yeah. 5/5

Girlfriend came over last night and insisted on watching one of the films that influenced me that she would never have seen. Poor thing.

2 hours later and her head was absolutely spinning. Classic quote "I didn't know film could do that".

It is dated in its images but so fucking ahead of everything in its ideas. She was entertained, confused, horrified and wowed. It maintains all of its power. 

Death to videodrome, long live the new flesh.

It was one of the fist films my ex-girlfriend and I watched. She had a thing where, if she wasn't enjoying a film, she'd rest her head on the arm of the sofa and have a nap. I think she was sound asleep not long in. She was wide awake all the way through The Matrix through which she hadn't seen, so it wasn't all bad.

Anyone remember this DC Comics "classic"? I'm on a bit of a Chris Evans binge with the fiancee and this was next on the list. A good cast of Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Negan can't help the poor script. It's neither zany and funny enough nor serious, it's trying to straddle the middle ground and failing miserably. I mean it starts with a bunch of kids getting blown up in a helicopter after a Bolivian operation goes wrong but also has Chris Evans singing "don't stop believing". It's like a Marvel movie but failing to make the tone level, if you know what I mean.

A better Chris Evan's actioner. The plot is absolute bobbins, but the action scenes are good and has Jason Statham playing a villain. The cops are also the bad guys which makes it relevant to today, even if the use of flip phones doesn't.

Terminator Salvation

 

John Connor is very angry. No, really he’s VERY ANGRY!!  REALLY ANGRY. 

 

Apart from how angry JC is, I’ve always really liked this and never got the hate. Great action, fantastic SFX and a decent enough plot. Worthington and Yelchin are excellent and despite being really fucking angry Bale is the best JC so far. It also looks stunning on blu ray.

Terminator Genesys 

 

Well, the rot had to set in somewhere. The main problem is Emilia is just crap, despite never looking lovelier. She totally kills the film stone dead with her utterance of the second most famous line of the franchise. Jason is brilliant as JC but even he isn’t enough to save the film, nor is an excellent turn from Arnie.

Terminator Dark Fate

 

This just runs out of steam 2/3rds of the way through. I’m not sure why people were very happy when it was announced that Hamilton would be returning as Sarah. There’s a reason she hasn’t had much of a career post T2. It’s because she’s shit at acting . I think she actually spoils the film and undoes some of Davis’s and Arnies phenomenal work. The terminator is also rubbish with no personality at all.

Blood Games (1990)

"Don't let them knockers hypnotise you, boy!" Unfortunately for the hicks in this film they didn't heed the advice. Members of a women's baseball team are attacked, their coach is murdered. The survivors will have to fight for their lives against a small town full of determined, if comically-inept, rednecks, and ultimately get their revenge. Brilliantly trashy revenge flick with plenty of T&A, baseball bats to the bonce and oh-so-satisfying slo-mo payback. The pace never lets up, both sides take a proper beating, but the feisty girls give it right back. It's straightforward but no less entertaining for it.

X men First Class

 

Not only my fave X film, but one of my favourite super hero films full stop.  Just A fantastic fun with a perfect cast. I was going to deduct half a mark as the usually brilliant Bacon is a bit rubbish here. But it’s got Ironside in it, so fuck it

Perhaps the most under rated blockbuster of the last 5 years. This ridiculously entertaining film rarely puts a foot wrong apart from some sexist costumes and a couple of poor casting choices for the new mutants. Great plot, great baddie and McEvoy and Fassbender are just sublime.

Equalizer 2000 (1987)

This is a thrilling mess of a film, various factions in the borderlands constantly fighting, the sound of foley explosions and gunfire is almost constant. All you need to know is the guys in black are the arseholes, then you can just sit back and enjoy the confusion of combat. At the centre of this is Richard Norton's character, a deserter from the bad guys who, in a montage that could only really come from 1987, crafts the ultimate OTT gun with more barrels than you could ever want, all without his shirt on - prime 80s. This features a pre-T2 Robert Patrick in his first feature, puts in a decent performance. Definitely a decent enough straight-to-video post-nuke watch.

Internal Affairs (1990)

 

Filled a gap in my list of nineties film I missed first time round. I remember this film was a pretty big thing at the time it came out. Probably because Gere was playing against type as a bad guy. I always think super good looking guys like Richard Gere make for good baddies (see also Tom Cruise in Collateral). His dead eyed stares in this are chilling.

 

Overall, it's an odd film, starting out fairly routine but interesting as Andy Garcia and Laurie Metcalf work the case, trying to bring Gere to justice. Then it seems to take a bit of a left turn towards the end, becoming more dreamlike and psychological. When the picture turns black and white, and the credits start rolling over the aftermath of the film's violent climax, I didn't feel as though the good guys had really won. I felt grubby.

Extra Ordinary (2019)

A fun Irish independent horror comedy about a woman who can communicate with the dead but is reluctant to do so until a man whose dead wife won't leave him alone and whose daughter goes missing contacts her. I don't think it really pushed the boundaries as much as it could and plays it quite safe with the laughs but it was an enjoyable 90mins that past the time and the 6 laughs test. It's on Netflix if you fancy something easy one night.

Your Name (2016)

I don't think I need to say much more about this cinematic masterpiece. It's easily the best animated movie of the last decade and outside of Avengers Infinity War/Endgame it's my most watched film of the last few years. The animation is stunning, the soundtrack is second to none and the storytelling beautiful. It's ticks every box imaginable. I watched it this time with the English dubs as my daughter wanted to watch it (even though it's a 12A, I think it's suitable for a 6-year-old). The English dubs aren’t great tbh, Makoto Shinkai clearly doesn't have the pull Studio Ghibli has to pull in A listers, but that still didn't ruin my experience. This is also on Netflix and I would advise everyone to watch it as its truly something special. Make sure you watch it in Japanese though with the subtitles, it works so much better.

Space Jam (1996)

I recently watched The Last Dance (watch this if you haven't as it's incredible, even if you don't follow Basketball) and it made me nostalgic for Space Jam. It's not great, we all know this, but as someone who saw it when they were 10, I still really enjoyed it and couldn't help myself singing along to all the music (minus R Kelly for obvious reasons). It's fun silly entertainment and I still get a kick out of the Looney Toon characters. Also, Bill Murray is easily the best thing in it, but it's Bill Murray so what do you expect.

3/5 for nostalgia reasons but objectively it's a 2/5 at best

 

A Simple Favour (2018)

A black comedy starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively that has more layers that several onions. I did find it enjoyable and funny in places but it seems to pull on too many threads. It just needed to stick to the main one really and not go into all the side stuff that in reality doesn't have too much bearing on the story. They could have reached the same places without all the convoluted back story of Anna Kendrick's character.

So this is on Oz Netflix as of today.it's not a bad way to waste 2 hours and even Kevin Hart's inclusion can't fuck it up. Kids will probably love it and it's mild diversion for adults, the rock does his thing, Jack Black is fine, Kevin Hart is only moderately annoying and Karen Gillian(?)  kicks arse.

I do not like this film at all. The previous two films where all about the plot and the tight gunplay action. All that goes out the window in this film. The plot is utter nonsense, and the action veers too far into close-quarters-combat for me, and even that's not really well done because the choreography is poor, with fight scenes looking slow. But the killer for me is this film veers wildly into torture porn, it's trashy as fuck. The whole film is trash.

Furlough film club returns

 

"Eurovision song contest, the story of fire sage"

 

First up, I actually really like eurovision. It's big stupid cheesy fun and it's as out and proud as it's possible to be. I don't identify with that world, but I do identify with bunch of people who are having a bloody good time and don't care what you may think about it all.

 

So, Will Farrell turns up and thinks he can take the piss out of it all and singularly fails to spot that eurovision isn't taking itself seriously in the slightest to begin with.

Every moment Farrell is in the scene it's shit. His character is apparently obsessed with eurovision and wants to win the contest to put his Icelandic Town on the map for reasons. Bizarrely he gets there with sidekick Rachel McAdams (who is ace), is rubbish and is told constantly why he is rubbish.

The highlight is a big party with past winners of eurovision in a big sing along. Suddenly Conchita Wurst, and Netta Barzilai turn up to demonstrate just what's so amazing about eurovision and how it doesn't need a 50 something American playing his usual 50 something idiot man child to take the piss.

Every scene without Will Farrell is great, he shits it up. But every scene with European actors in, who know what eurovision is, is great. But really, Ireland should have won with "my lovely horse"

Inception (2010)

 

 Holy shit, inception is 10 years old. I've attempted to watch it on two other occasions and got 1/2 hour in before giving up for some reason and the fact that it's nearly 3 hours long is quite daunting. Anyhoo, Nolan and 3 of his  apparent best mates, Tom, Ciaran and Michael   with help from one or two others put together a mind bending heist movie. Given the fact that the movie is 10 years old and the 'ohh, ahhh' moments have largely been given away I was wondering if the plot would hold up to scrutiny. People smarter than me will pick holes in said plot no doubt but for me there was a pretty consistent level of tension  and some cracking set pieces in the 2nd half, for me it's Nolans best. Which is not to say that  anything else he's done is not good, I just appreciated them more than enjoyed them outright.

 

Am looking forward to Tenet, seems similar in mind bending stakes to this.

An effective if over produced thriller with a mesmerising performance from Foy. Basically a better version of Spectre this rarely puts a foot wrong apart from playing everything a bit too safe.

A good remake of the 80s b movie starring the bloke from Nip/tuck (no, the other one). This is a well made film with a cast that’s clearly enjoying themselves (not least jailbait Amber Heard who really shines here).

Lifeforce (1985)

 

I seem to watch this every couple of years. It has many charms, not least those of Mathilda May. And a cast of old school British thespians chewing the scenery. So much so that they tend to overshadow the film's lead who plays an American astronaut. One thing that stood out a lot more this time round, is the film's positive depiction of countries working together to explore space: Europe (including the UK) and the USA combining their skills and expertise, and pool of astronauts for manned space flights. Certainly nothing like we have now.

 

Somehow, I discovered that I'd rated this 3 out of 5 on letterboxd. Madness. It's wonderful schlock.
