Bosses

Playing PSO last night, it occured to me just how bloody good the boss battles in the game really are. There's no comparable experience to taking on Olga Flow or Dark Falz with three other players and soundly prodding their buttocks after an epic battle. Even more so if you perform the finishing blow. Huge boss battles are bloody great, and really make you feel like you've accomplished something. See Metroid Prime, Golden Sun, practically every Zelda game, Eternal Darkness, and the Mega Drive Sonic games. But if they're done poorly, they're a real let down. Metroid: Zero Mission's bosses are far too easy, probably because the Super Missiles are far too powerful. Less than ten will finish off the final boss. Hopefully they get harder in hard mode.

Good bosses:

Every boss in Beyond Good & Evil. Big, scary, and creative attacks and attackpatterns. You must be alert while battling these bosses, since you do not have any form of cool power-ups or super powerful special attacks.

Magneto in X-Men: Children of the Atom. Hard as hell but he uses almost all of his attacks every single turn. No cheapo tricks like using the same powerful attack over and over (typical cheap SNK trick!).

Bad bosses:

Boss in Dead or Alive 2 and 3. Mash buttons and hope you win. I tried using timed counters etc but when I start playing 'good' I get my ass kicked. Terrible!

Zone of the Enders (first boss). Lucky lucky lucky. I still have not figured out when you actually get hit...

more to follow :)

Bad Boss

Mizar out of Jet Force Gemini

Either I was crap or he was rock solid. To this day I still haven't beaten him.

Good Bosses

Like Jack said, the PSO bosses, especially online! Great sense of accomplishment and teamwork.

Golden sun is another great one, never have I felt so relieved after beating fusion dragon.

Zelda as well! Every final battle in Zelda is immense! (to me at least)

Oh and Grandia 2, just for the sheer length of some of the battles!

Nor me, I'm convinced it's impossible, like that jump in that Dennis the Menace game for the Amiga.

Phew! I thought it was only me! I refuse to use a guide as well, if that would even help which I don't think it would to be honest. I wonder what the ending of JFG is like? Hmm... I can only wonder. :)

It wasn't impossible but I too never managed to beat him.

The thing is, the battle was a LOT easier if you had collected a decent number of those things that allow you to carry more ammunition for the homing rocket launcher. I only collected one of them with Juno and was therefore only able to hold a total of 10 (?) missiles. If one collected them with one of the other characters instead then there was no way to go back and make things easier on yourself.

Bosses in Final Fantasy games. The big bosses die in very spectacular ways. Dissolving, screaming, going transparent, kneeling, exploding, trying to cheat death etc. After a 15 minute battle it feels so good to see the boss doing a 'dance with death'. But remember kids: killing is bad :)

.::: I like Prime as well, but only his initial form. Primarily because, like any boss should, it uses all of his attacks and many of it.

Any of the 'RPG' Castlevania's has bad bosses. They are either too strong or too weak depending on your level and never seem to be much of a challenge if you've been keeping up your character. Harmony of Dissonance was especially bad at this.

.::: Oh yes, add pratically any boss from the Darius games. Although I really liked those from G-Darius while pumping up that mega-beam to screen-filling proportions. :)

Almost forgot Mario & Luigi's final boss. A true test of everything you've learned in that game's battles. Delightful (if a little difficult at times).

PDO and Rez both feature my favourite boss-sequences. Bosses and on-rails shooters just 'work', I guess.

WarioWare Inc. has great "Boss" mini-games as well; the ninja girls' one (bouncy frog level) and the final Wario one (skateboarding and boomerang attack) in particular were great fun.

Oh, and of course all the Metal Slug games feature kick-arse bosses.

I'll never forget that 3rd level mothership in Rtype! one of my first memories a boss battle.. (the alien from the first level is ace too) :)

From Prime I like the rock-boss.. wow! especially when you had to use yer visor to work out which part of him to take out next.. superb!

Get 3 type final!

Theres a great homage to that level. This time you fight the huge mother ship as it hovers through a city on earth. Eye popping isnt the word! At some points it even switchs to a vertical view and you can see all debris falling all the way down onto the roads which are full of cars :P

End of OoT.. loved that whole battle.. especially when Gannondorf takes his Gannon form (or have I got that the wrong way round).

Topmongous...

Also, kind of off topic, but Halo breaks the mould by not having any bosses... just really really really tough set pieces at the end of levels. (argh.. still stuck at the end of Truth and Reconcilliation on Legendary).

"Get 3 type final!"

Oh yes.. I have it in my sights already. Currently lovin' Rtype-Delta... the bosses on that are ace too. This I'm sure will get me juiced up for 'Final'..

I just remembered the bosses in the Metal Slug games too... Like that stone pillar with the platforms that you have to climb while the munchin' mouth cruncher eats beneath you. MAD! :)

you're insane :P

i left my GC on overnight last night because i couldn't be bothered doing the 4 other bosses in a row again. just beat him a couple minutes ago :D

i really would have appreciated a save point somewhere on level 6, but never mind. i guess not having one forced me not to give up!
