Good episode. Daemon at the beginning was shit for a number of reasons.

 

Nothing we have seen about Daemon so far suggests he would kill someone one on one without being a dick and talking shit to inflate his ego first.

 

She knew who he was straight away but let him get close enough that he could startle her horse well enough to as good as kill her.

 

She was a proficient rider and hunter on her horse.  Daemon who probably rides dragons more than horses.  He startled her horse enough to jolt her off it, in a way that the horse landed on her and incapacitated her completely.  It feels like nitpicking in a show with dragons but the thing that really annoyed about that scene was how it was filmed, and there was also no reason not to have Daemon have a way to kill her (and it even to look like she came off a horse) that could have been done better.

Wowsers, apparently the Vale scene was shot just around the corner from Mam Tor in the Peak District. That's not far from me! In primary school we were taken to some nearby caves. It was also used in The Princess Bride, plus there's nearby road named Rushup Edge, which is an album by The Tuss (Aphex Twin). There's a lot going on around there...

I caught up with HOTD (hotdog?) this week. It's good but its no OG game of thrones, but then you must accept we probably won't get anything that good ever again. I like the characters in this and the different dynamics to GOT, but it definitely lacks the constant intrigue, wow moments, action and underlying menace of that show. I do agree episode 5 was a nice step up. It feels way too dragged out at times, like the hunt episode which could have been half the length whilst conveying the same info. The time jumps are also a bit jarring in the first few episodes. On the plus side its a compelling cast and a nice change to stick with a smaller cast of characters. Although one must wonder with all the time spent on these characters how it'll fare when major characters die (which they surely will), we've had little time spent outside of the core family.

 

Filming locations, sets and costumes are amazing as ever. The dragon CGI looks a bit ropey compared to GOT with that one exception of Damon next to his dragons head which looked amazing. This is a very minor nit pick but the opening credits are a bit wank, they look cool but whereas the GOT credits taught you the Map of Westeros and beyond, as well as the houses, in hotdog its just a confusing mess.

 

Anyway, hoping the pace picks up a bit now. Definitely worth watching, I'd give it 4/5 hotdogs and hope to see it improve in future as the writers get more confident.

I hope the pace stays exactly where it is. Of course it will be cathartic when it explodes into action, but the real joy is in the slow burn. Reminiscent of Breaking Bad season 3 or The Sopranos season 4 in a very good way.

the writers actually addressed this in a BTS clip;

They said the specific wording used by Martin felt too deliberate regarding her skull being caved in, that they thought it made sense that it wasn’t an accident.

Time skips are weird when some actors are changed but others aren't when their characters are essentially peers.

 

I still like the show, but it feels like it's racing so fast. Doesn't feel like a build to a long story - is this planned to be a one and done?

It was renewed for a second season straight after the first one so, no. Given the frequent time skips I imagine they might just run for the 200 odd years of pre GoT they have to work with.

They’ve already confirmed a second season, and from the books it’ll definitely take at least that.  Things haven’t even kicked off properly yet, they’re still setting that up.  Spoilers for the book, but assumptions on what I think they’ll do structure wise.

The king still has to die with I think will lead to the “big” event that people compare to the episode 9s of game of thrones seasons (eg, the red wedding, Cersei destroying the sept of Baelor, and so on).  Possibly even in episode 9 as well, to set up a season finale that deals with the fallout and set up season 2.

 

The event in the book is the aftermath of the kings death, where Alicent moves to put Aegon onto the throne in advance of Rheanyra even knowing by murdering the supporters to her claim currently in the city with the help of Cole. It helps that she already has a lot of support for that, but it sounds like a big event to end the season on for sure.

I think they could probably get a decent amount after this season when things kick off properly, and they deffo have scope to stretch it out I think.  There’s deffo a risk of Hobbiting it, but I could see it 3 seasons easy, maybe 4.

I really enjoyed this episode, there was a lot going on. Certainly one of the most visceral scenes of gore in any episode of GoT, tongues will be wagging over it I’m sure. 
 

I do wish the show would take a beat between setting up something and paying it off though, pacey doesn’t even begin to cover it. Like for example:

The Strongs head off to Harrehall, and both they and the castle are gone in the very next scene.

 

That’s really unsatisfying storytelling and feels rushed, and not the first time they’ve done it either. Also:

Larys went full psycho a bit fast didn’t he? Having his own father and brother killed like that - and the queen wasn’t even that keen on it! That could have used a bit of foreshadowing. 

 

You’ve got to love Paddy Considine though. Vaserys is useless, but played with a lot of empathy. The guy’s body is absolutely ruined, he looks like how I feel after getting in from work in the evening.

Plus the fact some actors have changed and some haven't. Seems rather odd. 

 

Something that has really been missing from this compared to GOT is a lack of depth in the characters. I don't feel like I really know much of their motivations and then some characters just seem to exist (the sons of the Hand for instance) as convenient plot devices. I'm still interested to see where it all goes but it hasn't grabbed me the same way as GOT had by this point.

I know it’s a pseudo medieval time period or whatever and that even in modern times childbirth is indeed quite a feat but I do find something slightly gratuitous/sadistic about the amount of agony (both on screen and referred to), the writers have put some of the child bearing characters through in just 6 episodes.

It's a fantasy world where women and gay people are treated as badly as they were in our medeival times. And dragons. Meh.

Its shown to contrast how Daemon, despite his image, was the only one to actually care about his wifes fate during the births. Viserys gave the go ahead to kill his wife, and Laenor wasnt even at the birth of 'his' kid.
