I caught up on the last two epsiodes last night. Episode 8 was fantastic, best one yet. Paddy has been amazing.

 

I hope they slow down on the time jumps in season 2 though because it feels like 3 seasons worth of material was used up in 8 epsiodes.

that it was for abortion, whilst implying that she is teetering on the edge of doing something dispicable (i.e. poisoning threats) - ready for the end of the episode, where she will begin the full heel turn transformation as she bids to seize the throne.

The next series shouldn't have time jumps - this series has covered a lot of the set up history leading up to the actual civil war.

 

We're caught up now so it will probably play out more like GoT.

Another question my colleague had was who the council guy is who greets Damon and Rheanyra outside the gate of the castle when they arrive at King's Landing. They mentioned his name, have we seen him before or is he significant in any way? Just seemed a bit random.

I watched an episode recap video on YouTube that explained him. It said he hasn't been a big character so far, but will become more important as it goes on because he's one of the few Rhaenyra loyalists left in King's Landing.

The series is intentionally throwing out ambiguous situations to create a sense of mistrust, conspiracy and unease. And then they sprinkle just enough breadcrumbs that people can make a decent case for either scenario up until there's an actual reveal.

I didn't really feel a concrete feeling on whether it was abortion tea or poison. But the fact that it could be either does plenty for supposition about her character.

 

It's definitely an effective way of creating online discussion and engaging the kind of drawn-out analysis that is the series' bread and butter.

I think this series is fucking ace.  Really enjoying it - it's definitely good enough to hold it's own as a separate thing to Game of Thrones.

I think the writing for Alicent has been very good indeed.  Clearly conflicted but ultimately I like the way she's made out to be a good person, and not an absolute shit like Aegon or Aemond.  The poison/abortion tea thing in particular is clever, and I think it's the latter as that would make more sense with her character.  Her horror at the murders of the Strongs earlier in the season, her attempts to reconcile with Rhaenyra and her children at the end of the last episode - she wants to do the right thing, she wants to respect her king.  Yet there's fire in her as we saw last week when Aemond lost his eye.  

 

Which is why the very end is so intriguing.  Seems like she'll have to do the very thing she has tried to avoid.

 

Also Matt Smith is absolutely nailing this - he's perfectly cast

This is entirely the point (a device made up by the TV series, and not these books).

 

That combined with the continued use and presence of the dagger (the one that was used in the attempt on Bran and the one that was used to kill the Night King).  

 

Both of these references are to shown how "pointless" the Dance of Dragons is, it's just power mongering in the material world as everything else gets lined up to this world saving point.

Yeah, he's been great but Martin has barely "written" Vicerys anyway.  The books he refers to "Dance of Dragons" and  "The World of Ice and Fire" may as well be those passages from the Bible where people begat other people and went on barely penned adventures.

The writing here is almost all on the TV writers (god help us).  But it's been great so far using Martin's characters as way-points.

I've been feeling very on the fence about this series, but I think this episode has won me over.

 

They're really putting the effort in to reward people who are paying attention, which is always a sure sign that the writers actually care about the show. A couple of things I noticed this episode:

When Larys visits the Queen she says 'The hour is quite late', which I'm pretty sure is the exact same thing she said to Viserys when he called her in for some marital rape.

 

The other one was Rhaenys being told to ring the bell when she had made up her mind, and her dragon kool aid man moment coming straight after the bells had been rung for Aegon.

The chaotic atomisation of each of the main character’s ambitions and schemes in this episode was delightful to watch. The mad hint for Aegon by multiple parties, and the attempt to smuggle Rhaneys out of King’s Landing likewise. 
 

When Tweedle Dee was sword fighting with Criston on the steps of the church, and loses, Criston asks “Where’s your brother?”, at which point we see Dweedle Dumb hanging back, not helping. What was that about? Even if he had deep, deep reservations about Aegon becoming king, you’d think he would still help his brother out. 


 

Here’s the recap from last week’s episode. I always get so much extra detail from these vids, they’re great.

I'm loving Rhaenys in this.

Like this show's Olenna Tyrell, but with a mf'ing dragon. Earlier in the season she was embittered about losing the throne and had an 'Ah, sweet summer child' attitude towards young Rhaenyra, but now she's like, 'Fuck this, these people are trash, Rhaenyra or death!' She has lost everyone close to her and with nothing left she's fully committed to realising her one wish through Rhaenyra. I'm surprised she managed to keep her cool with Alicent throwing that all in her face, btw.

The camera focuses on his deformed foot so often that I’m now convinced he’s not actually disabled and is going to pull a Keyser Söze at some point.
