This is pretty excellent in regards to writing, it must be said. The world building works really well too, it's in an alternate earth but all of the racism and factions etc get set out in such a way that makes you understand who is who but not with such broad strokes as evil group A, good group B.

There's also a very clever internal dialogue that goes on which reminded me of planescape torment but due to you actually conversing with different elements of your own psyche, it's difficult to "game" the game.

I got a game over because my character had pretty low morale which I wasn't really paying attention to and after starting a conversation with some unruly yoofs (which my cop colleague suggested I didn't because these kids were nothing but pure id so it wouldn't go anywhere) they started insulting me and I got so depressed my morale tanked and game over. Because I got bullied too much in my frail hungover state.

:)

You really don't see that every day.

However, I'm not completely convinced it's as clever as it thinks it is just yet, whether a lot of it is smoke and mirrors for instance but smoke and mirrors made of good writing is much better than hidden by shiny graphics.

Yeah I'm on my second playthrough and it does feel like a bit smoke and mirrors to be honest. You can change the journey a fair amount but ultimately the destination doesn't change in any meaningful sense and it is a very small gameworld (bit naughty for the developers to claim this was "open world" in any meaningful sense). Skill checks on subsequent playthroughs just end up feeling a bit frustrating to be honest once you know what the outcomes can be.

So not a 10 from me, but certainly an 8, everyone should play it at least once, and probably will feature in my top 10 for the year.

Just finished a second session on this and I'm done, for smoke and mirrors reasons really. Might as well just read its spine and not even sure I'm interested in doing that.

Shame, as I really fancied it on paper, but there's so little agency.

So not Planescape after all?

I have no idea how much you can alter the main story itself, but there are definitely multiple options available in how to progress it, and how you shape your character. There are also a whole bunch of sidequests available, also allowing for multiple approaches.

The RPG mechanics actually detract from it in some ways. They are fun for the first playthrough where you just roll with the punches, but second time round if you have like an 80%+ shot at passing a check and you fail, you end up reloading cos you just want to see new content rather than replaying it endlessly. Plus the constant juggling of outfits gets a bit silly, particularly as there is no sort function on the stats.

It would be good to give player the option of auto-passing if your stats are over a certain threshold.

Yeah I think there are certain fail states that are even better than passing the checks and they're great. But the game does have some fail states that just blocks you from content, particularly the stuff around the church. Which isn't great.

I was talking to my folks about this the other day - I'm not sure if it's my sort of thing but my dad's a fan of games with some sort of agency in decision making (and he's also a fan of detective fiction frameworks ^_^ ), so I showed him some reviews and websites - just informing him that a game like this exists - and left him to make his mind up  I think he'll end up getting it...

It does sound incredible though, and I'd have a closer look at it myself if not for all of the other games keeping me busy!

I love the game but sometimes you just run into brick walls where you just can't figure out how to progress and then find out you missed a tiny dialogue option on someone random.

I'm currently stuck on day three

I'm looking for Ruby but can't pass the mural check even with super high shivers. I've got lots of quests open but no clue how to progress any of them

I hate when the only thing I can think of to do requires me to wait hours.

The game also desperately needs a fast travel option

And done. The last section felt a bit unearned but overall an amazing experience. I left enough side stuff undone that I could easily do a completely different playthrough. Not perfect but  probably my GOTY.

Amazing soundtrack. Will buy when available. 16 hours on the clock.

Enjoying this for the most part, but the regular grammatical errors and typos are beginning to fuck me off.

"I want buy this Dick Mullen novel".

I'm super early in the game, and have seen several mistakes of this kind.

Christ, how do you cope with some of the posts on this forum?

You know what this game reminds me of?

This place. rllmuk.

Each part of your character's psyche is like an individual poster on rllmuk, having its own opinion on any given situation. Some giving genuinely good advice, some giving you really bad advice, one or two just taking the piss, a few more giving their hot takes, another one or two getting overly excited about something, and some just being plain fucking weird.

:)

"things really *kicked into gear* when Titus took the reigns

The errors are getting tiresome now, perhaps as tiresome as my post about them on here? ;) Additionally, the actual story playing out isn't grabbing me. The best bits are when Harry's psyche elements kick in, but the murder investigation plot is a bit...

I like Kim Kitsuragi though, he's interesting at least.

A tip for any new players. Turn off the voice acting. What little there is gets in the way when you're reading, most of it is rubbish, and a lot of it sounds like it was recorded on a £5 microphone on a PC from the '90s.

After what appeared to be another schoolboy error in the writing (loosing instead of losing) I've done some digging. I had no idea the lead writer (and most of the dev team) is Estonian, so this is clearly just bad fucking translation/English. But it's really bad.

They need to tighten this up for their next game.
