I thought you literally own a PS5?

Yeah, but that's strictly for the exclusives as I personally prefer using the Series X (silent, ease of use, speed, quick resume, future proof etc etc - YMMV of course, it's a personal preference)

I literally also own a capable gaming PC, but I waited because I wanted to play on console. I've waited this long, I can wait a bit more :)

Really looking forward to it obviously because it sounds like it's exactly my kind of thing. Can you confirm @Wiper?

@Mr. Gerbik I mean, I think it's brilliant, unique, thoughtful and engaging, so hopefully you'll like it!

I'm tempted to double dip when it comes to Switch. Not sure how I feel about it switching to full voice acting, mind! There's something about prose-heavy RPGs (even completely atypical ones like this) where I just expect to read them (and, frankly, they tend to be written to be read rather than acted out), so I've no idea how well that'll end up working.

I usually like any RPG or stealth game that you like, so thanks for confirming

Isn't the voice acting optional in this version? Would be weird if you can't turn it off. I'll give it a go, but like you with prose-heavy RPGs I find that it works best when they voice the first few lines to establish a tone and then let you read the rest at your own pace.

Is this not the whole point in owning both consoles?

Me and my partner loved this, up until a point. It was just a bit too dense on the worldbuildy stuff for our tastes, and I would've preferred a bit more detective work and less wandering around wondering wtf we need to do next.

But it is surprising and original and pretty darkly funny, with some amazing unexpected results to some of the choices you make.

Apparently there's a patch incoming:

In other news, I've spend most of my evening...

Spoiler

talking to two racists, with multiple Aspects/Skills egging on to gain more info... This game makes you feel weird. Also, that bit with Evrart had me squirming.

I usually stick to a more neutral stance in RPGs, but this game really "invites" you to roleplay other stuff.

How can you not have played this?!

You're not the first person to say this to me. It's been on my Steam wishlist for ages.

Well, you can indulge in vices and doing so isn't necessarily good or evil either way. So I'm guessing if the dev added a "knowing is half the battle" message after every choice/check/action it would've been OK.

Personally I find it incredibly strange that a game aimed at adults, has to essentially be toned down to allow for minors to (not) play it?

OK, I've found out the two things the OFLC probably objected to. Spoilers.

Spoiler

-You get an achievement for taking speed.

-You can share some of the drugs you find with kids.

The first would be easy to fix for the Australian market. The second harder. In Australia they removed all the children from Fallout 2 and that rendered the game difficult / impossible to complete.

With the second one:

Spoiler

You can't actually give the drugs to the kids, the game will acknowledge your intent, but Cuno will refuse to take them from you, thinking you're a narc. There's a couple of things like that where the game stops you from being a really shitty person because it wants to be a story about recovery and redemption.

Controls are bloody awful on PS5. Is there a patch on the way to address them?

I’d have preferred it if it had a cursor control system using the left stick (like a mouse) than control the character directly. There’s even a cursor that keeps appearing on the screen briefly when you perform an action (a bug?).

I really want to play this properly but I’m now holding off for a patch.

I hit a game breaking bug on day three involving a sandcastle and a missing car, so despite enjoying it, I’m now forced to wait for a patch. Crossing my fingers I won’t have to restart the whole fricking game.

Hope they can fix it as I was really enjoying it.

I'm only an hour or so into this and aside from the soon-to-be-patched controls it's wonderful, but I was wondering whether you guys are rinsing the dialogue options (a la Mass Effect, where convention is to just select every dialogue option until you've explored them all) or if you're strictly role-playing as 'your' character and ignoring anything else that comes up. I'm not sure if this changes as things proceed, but in the early rooms it seems like you can role-play several different character types in one conversation, as the 'main' options for a convo can usually be returned to and another one then selected, allowing you to go more than one way in terms of approach. Is there any disadvantage to this, other than being a bit scattershot in how you're presenting your character to others?

IIRC, any new avenue of conversation consumes in-game time, so going for all of them on every single character can be a problem when there's certain conditions to continue throughout the game.

Default is KBM - TBH though, I've been playing it with an X-Box pad because when I played the PC version at launch, KBM felt a bit clunky to me personally (things like double click to run, which probably had a toggle somewhere). and I like to be in a more relaxed state than being up against my PC desk when there's lots of dialogue to chew through.

Pad at the moment doesn't resolve the clunkiness (there's plenty of fighting the direct control of the player character to navigate the town and contextual selection would be better as radial-based navigation), but the fact I can just kick back on the bed to listen to and read the dialogue is a big thing for me.

I would advise against this - it's been a while since I played, but I'm pretty sure there are dialogue options which have in-game consequences.

Spoiler

At the very least, some options will damage Morale, which will kill you if it gets to zero.

Was tempted to get this with the new release, went to GOG to see prices, found this review, and now I'm edging back away from it, since it reinforces the concerns I had previously.

I realise we're all having a love in with this topic, since you're all fans, but I wanted thoughts on this review. I don't feel like crapping £30 on this only to end up with basically a VN. It's why I never bothered to get Steins;Gate.

If it were £5.99 then I'd take the risk. But this is a massive chunk of cash for something where I could basically just watch a YouTube playthrough for free (according to what this person says).

Have any newcomers to the game been disappointed in it?

Why is this in the video game section?

December 18, 2019

Video games are only video games if they have gameplay. This is an irrefutable truth that creates the foundation of what distinguishes video games as their own unique medium separate from film and literature. Disco Elysium is an electronic choose-your-own-adventure book, heavily drawn from the like of Steve Jackson's books and visual novels.

This is another fruit of the casual virus that co-opted this entertainment medium aggressively in the past 20 years, who are the type of people that believe "games are art", and who have perpetuated the falsehood of "RPGs have always been about story and dialogue, and have always had bad/no combat". However, while Disco Elysium is obviously not an RPG, to even pose the question of it being one in the first place, it would have to be a video game. Before you say "you're wrong, it has a heavily scripted combat encounter that plays off of the same skills that are used for dialogue in the rest of the game!", the joke of "gameplay" that is implemented in this shamble is glorified to the extent that you must also then consider the complexity of navigating a Blu-Ray play menu gameplay.

Suffer not the Disco Elysium proponent, for he is a wolf in sheep's clothing, he is a Trojan horse at your gates. His insidious nature is to rewrite history and redefine what a video game and RPG is, a card taken from the playbook of Karl Marx. Behold his true intentions when he proclaims "Disco Elysium is finally a game to experience story unencumbered by gameplay". This is not a video game, this is an outreach project for GOG's website to host other content besides video games. To video games and actual RPGs, this is an immense decline that contributes to the death of good video games. The end goal of casuals - the like of whom glorify this book - has always been the absolute dissolution of gameplay from video games, to make them become movies and books. By supporting this facade and others like it, every day we stray further from God's light.
