Analogue Pocket - FPGA GB/GBC/GBA + More

How do folk find the screen size of the Pocket? I currently have an Anbernic Rg552 which can do a 5x integer scale of SNES games (which is great), but I feel like the 3.5 inch screen of the Pocket might be too small.

In theory, the Pocket plus Dock could be the perfect setup for my favourite consoles - SNES and GBA - allowing me to enjoy them on the big screen and  continue handheld when I fancy it. But if the screen’s too small I wouldn’t enjoy/use it handheld, and I may as well go with a Super NT for playing on the TV.

its always going to be a problem.

The pocket is perfect for games on the move, and playing your original nintendo (and others) carts.

if you are never going to play on the go, or are playing for long periods at home you NEED the dock - and a controller.

that's how i use mine.

but yes, the MISTER and other analogue consoles are better value for you,

Thanks. I think I’ll investigate the scaling options in retroarch to create a 3.5 inch 4:3 image on the RG552 - then see how that feels. My guess is I’ll find it too small, which means I’ll have to accept having discrete saves/progress on the Anbernic and then a Super NT/Mister for the TV.

So I’ve been playing this over the Xmas break and I need to change my GOTY list. This is the best hardware released this year - I love it so, so much. (And to think I nearly cancelled my pre-order.)

For 99% of people I would say get a Miyoo Mini for £60. it’s a quarter of the price, and plays everything so well. Hell, I genuinely think the Miyoo is an essential purchase for majority of this forum. Yes,  the pocket is better in all ways, but the diminishing returns on all that extra money is intense. It’s the is retro gaming equivalent of buying a 5 grand coffee machine to take your espresso from a 9/10 to a 9.5/10

…but the quite moments of Christmas at the olds, playing the analogue pocket felt like the most premium childhood. It’s beautiful to look at and the screen is fantastic, and like a coffee junkie who is convinced that his set up tastes better, playing my all time favourite 8bit childhood game (SMS Sonic) felt perfect in a way that normal emulation doesn’t. It felt far more nostalgic for some reason. Just exactly, perfectly as I remember.

The dpad is glorious. The face buttons are perfect. Even the shoulder buttons feel like the SP but better.

I suspect I’m being taken for a ride. But I’m loving the ride.

10/10 (but get a miyoo mini instead)

I’m perfectly happy with the screen I’ve played through about 10hrs of GBA games which are by far the smallest screen size of cores it runs. and it’s still perfectly sized for the content. I’ve started FFIII/VI in snes and it’s much bigger than GBA.

Ive retro arch on SteamDeck but I’ll play FF in preference on pocket.

But to warn you I don’t think there are save states on the snes core.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just spent two hours on a London bus today. The idea of busting out a switch or steam decking such a crowed space seemed preposterous, and using my phone would delay into doom scrolling. so instead I took my pocket and played through more of Metroid Zero Mission. I absolutely adore it. GBA/GB games are just the right complexity level for travelling.

I really worried that having a pocket was a redundant waste on money when I had a emu-deckified deck, but they complement each other brilliantly.  The deck and switch are fantastic ways to play full fat games without your TV, but nevertheless ideally in your own house.

I don't think I've been as pleased with a handheld, as a handheld, since the bygone days on Rhythm Tengoku on my GBA Micro.

Noticed my local CEX has two of these, presumably at huge markup (no idea what the regular price was). This looks like something I’d be interested in if it had been mass market, mass produced system, but I guess it was too niche for that, unfortunately.

I presume that the PCE and NGP adaptors won't be released until the system has cores capable of playing then, which it isn't at the moment (with official cores anyway, no idea about cores that have been ported from MiSTer, although there’s no NGP core for that at the moment either).

There's a firmware update which adds a library of any non-flash game cart you put in, plus some HDMI fix for the dock.

A few more cores are available, including Wonderswan.
Jotego seems to be porting arcade cores across from Mister at a decent rate too.

I enjoyed revisiting Llamatron on the Amiga, projected big screen. It's what Yak would have wanted back in the day!

They’re about £200 (before extortionate shipping/tax) but even so that’s at minimum a hearty £300 mark up!

It says something to the quality that I wouldn’t flip mine.

What's the best way to buy one of these? And when do you have to pay the tax? I.e. does it get here and then I pay it before it's released this side?

I have never bought anything from abroad but I really do want one of these ^_^

If you want one first-hand, you have to order from Analogue and wait for them to fulfil.
I think mine was sent DHL/Fedex(?) and In my experience they either (1) receive to a local depot and then require tax payment before delivery (2) deliver and then invoice for payment - maybe it depends on the value of the item and if you have history with them?

They'll add their own processing fee too - somewhere around £11-12 extra.

I’d offer you mine but I have plans to use it for music production alongside a bit of gaming on my travels! I’ve just ordered the dock a few weeks ago… it’s not cheap but I’ll use it.

I did the same once mine arrived. Hope I don’t have to wait another year for the dock…

Bear in mind that Analogue take payment upfront.

You pay import VAT to the courier, and they usually contact you just prior to delivery to take the payment. Occasionally they'll deliver and then contact you for payment. Both DHL and Fedex will add an admin charge (e.g. £12) for having already paid the VAT to HMRC when the goods entered the UK, but I've been successful  in getting Fedex to waive that.
