Looking forward to playing this as my 'Big Exclusive' come Series X launch day.

Never played a Yakuza game before. How long are they normally?

Really long. You’ll normally finish the main storyline around the 30hr mark. Your completion % will be about 40%. You’ll probably never finish the other 60% unless you want to go balls deep in Mahjong.

This is an outlier in Yakuza games though as it’s turn-based rather than button mashing fighting, so if you want the true Yakuza experience you’re probably better off with Yakuza 0 (Which is on gamepass).

Thanks. I knew about the turn-based nature of this one and I'm pretty sure I will prefer it to a more traditional brawler.

FWIW, I’m rubbish at fighting games. I’ve managed to finish every Yakuza game by sticking it on easy and mashing the X button. For me it’s all about the weird side-stories.

Standard. (yes this was captured whilst using the ingame camera, yes there's probably a gallery they end up in anyway, sorry not sorry)

It hasn't really let me off the leash yet but I've had some QTE chasing and some tutorial battles that go through commands, skills, guards, timed guards, etc. Maybe it's because I play JRPGs anyway but it's surprising how "normal" the combat seems... I always felt like classic Yakuza combat had a turn-taking rhythm of it's own - wait, block, attack when they're left open - so it doesn't feel too weird. Some of the bigger dudes were a problem when I didn't go in with healing items, and you kind of need to remember to use your special skills against more troublesome encounters, but it's been quite gentle so far.

I haven't explored a whole lot - I did drop into Club SEGA for a few minutes of Space Harrier, but really I'd like to play with the combat a bit more and see if I can find some more random battle encounters on the street... Oh, and Ichiban already feels like a huge dork and I love him.

Was planning to wait until XSX arrived, but my girlfriend started it on the One X.

She's up to:  Minor environment spoiler, mentioned in many reviews

Spoiler

The sewers

and it really is an uninspired grind. A shame as the rest of the game seems as fun as ever.

I read a review of this that complained about the frequency of encounters, making it such that it wasn't that fun to explore the big city. It put me off a bit but I do normally love a JRPG.

But at the price of these next gen games it makes it harder to take a punt... Especially when Yakuza 0 is on game pass and supposedly great.

I've never played a yakuza game at all. Hmm.

Yeah get used to lots of encounters, or walking really slowly to avoid them. It's the nature of the games.

The difference I think the reviewer made was that its one's thing if you can just button mash through them in other yakuza games but the pace of turn based is a bit more of a slow down. Just wondering if that's something people have felt when playing.

As I say I do normally enjoy a turn based JRPG and forgive random encounters, especially when items normally exist to stop the battles happening.

Hit Chapter 4 and I’ve been pleasantly surprised how the turn based combat has been integrated into the Yakuza series and I’m enjoying the variety of party members backing up Ichiban. So far so good.

Regarding the enemy encounter rate - it does seem higher than previous iterations however that could just be my imagination. I have noticed that you can win a battle then enter a nearby restaurant for hp/MP replenishment and upon exiting they’ve respawned directly in front of you which is slightly annoying.

However, the main location seems designed to offer multiple routes to avoid a number of random encounters if you do choose so.

Another interesting change is a fog of war effect on the map, whereby the more you explore the more you will discover.

If you have game pass start with Zero if you're unsure. Might as well since it's 'free'.

This was my big fear when they announced the change to turn based. At least in Yakuza 0 you could bung cash at them to avoid it, but in others it turned into a bit of a slog getting from A to B even when the battles were over quick, let along being proper JRPG battles.

There's usually an item you get that reduces random encounters. During the main game in the rest of the series, it's usually worth doing the fight for advancement. When you're leveled up quite high they usually only last a few seconds anyway haha. I expect LAD will have a similar item show up eventually

Very specific use case here, I appreciate, but has anyone else started this on PS4 and is now having trouble moving their save over to a PS5? For some reason this is the only game that doesn't show up in my list of PS4 cloud saves on the PS5, despite it showing correctly on the PS4.

I know that PS4 saves won't carry over to the fancy PS5 version in March but I was counting on my existing save working with the PS4 version of the game in backward compatible mode on the PS5...

I don’t mind so much because I like the battle system, but also you still find some low-level encounters in the main city map which are over in seconds. The Ichiban in my game has been using some kind of “dancer” job a lot, and he has a breakdancing “windmill” attack that ends some of these low-level encounters instantly since it does huge damage to a group.

It would be nice to have an accessory that enables you to skip these low-level encounters entirely (Persona 5 has an unlockable skill which enables this in Mementos) but generally I find that it’s okay.

There is, but it takes a while to get one. There's one in chapter 12 and another I picked up from somewhere I've since forgotten about.

The one I remember in chapter 12 is called Hariti's Amulet and you get it by

Spoiler

doing floor 12 of the battle arena in Sotenbori. I'd heavily recommend grinding out the floors here a few times for some great items, a lot of money and a bunch of levels you'll likely need for the difficulty spike that's the boss.

Oh, and I platinumed the game. On PC. Except I didn't because platinums are a playstation thing and the achievement is bugged on PC. I did everything though because it's absolutely super rad and should be played by everyone with a pulse.

As a total noob to Yak I am loving this.

About 10 hours in and I’ve not gotten annoyed at encounters yet. They’re not random as you can see them and avoid them most of the time but as has been mentioned the street battles are over pretty quickly and are pretty satisfying.

I adore the main character already and some of the early story themes are really good and quite deep in places as well.
