Harley Quinn - new cartoon

I'd been seeing stories for a while about a new DC Universe Harley Quinn cartoon but didn't pay much attention. I just knew Penny off Big Bang Theory was playing the main role. Happened upon a trailer this morning and it's not what I expected, being full of swearing and violence.

They've assembled a pretty impressive cast too

Kaley Cuoco as Harley

Alan Tudyk as Joker and Clayface

Diedrich Bader as Batman

Jason Alexander as Cy Borgman

Christopher Meloni as James Gordon

Tony Hale as Doctor Psycho and Felix Faust

Giancarlo Esposito as Lex Luthor

Wanda Sykes as Queen of Fables

J. B. Smoove as Frank the Plant

James Adomian as Bane

James Wolk as Superman

And a bunch more, I think some from other cartoons too

Well that’s shit.

Harleys voice is completely wrong and what is DC’s obsession with needless swearing and gratuitous violence in everything they make.  Why didn’t they just base this new cartoon on the recent comics, which were full of madcap stupid fun.

DC just don’t have a clue when it comes to their characters half the time.

I don't think it's completely without merit, but needing to crowbar swearing into every scene in the trailer lets you know who they're aiming for.

Bearing in mind that the audience for Harley's antics is a bit older, I don't think they've pitched incorrectly, but it would've had much more impact if they'd just dropped a single 'fuck' in the middle or at the end of the trailer.

So many iterations of Harley Quinn catch shit for not totally mimicking her voice from TAS, but I don't personally have any problem with them offering up different takes.

Why is her voice wrong? Theres no right or wrong way, just what you prefer. Theres been loads of different Jokers who have been decent but dont sound like Hamill. They don't have to copy everything that's gone before, having new takes and versions of the character is fine.

Also, the swearing and violence is fine, it's a new show/take that's clearly catering to late teens/young adults. I'd have thought by now, that people would have realised cartoons doesnt mean "kids show".

I agree, I'd prefer that they try to let each performer try their own thing, rather than aiming for an impression of Arleen Sorkin and getting it not-quite-right, like Tara Strong did in the Arkham games.

I think they have struggled to get the right balance of derangement and endearingness (is that a word?) ever since Arleen Sorkin stopped voicing her. I remember the version in Assault on Arkham, where she was voiced by Hynden Walch, crossing the line into just being annoying.

(Hynden Walch, I found out the other day, had a live-action role in Groundhog Day as the woman marrying Michael Shannon's character! General Zod and Starfire, together at last...)

Watching episode 1 of this.

Is it me, or is it actually quite...ok?

Against all the odds, this has proven to be the only animated show or film I've been able to get into in a long, long time. The first ep was certainly too tryhard with what felt like more 'fucks!' than Goodfellas and some quite horrendous gore but Ivy's marvellous and nervous breakdown Gordon is great so I stuck around for episode two and it was a big improvement. Sad Tom Hardy Bane owns, Kite Man owns, and crashing the Cobblepot bar mitzvah was amazing.

I just finished up episode three and likewise, it's got some inspired stuff going on (the LoD's canned PR response to Dr Pyscho's verbal, ah, 'slip' was perfect). I can see why purists will hate it but eh, can't please everyone. And I'm digging the less well known pulls like Maxi Zeus and the Queen of Fables.

It's not funny. It clearly wants to be edgy but it thinks shouting FUCK is the height of comedy. Nice animation though.

I expect they went 100mph with it in episode one just to demonstrate this isn’t typical DC fare, as the way it eases down from then on in feels too deliberate to be anything less than a strategy.

But yeah, this is pretty great. Most I’ve laughed in ages. It’s daft but not dumb. Would certainly recommend anyone who’s on the fence to give it a shot.

"YOU TWO STOLE MY FAMILY JEWELS!"
"..your balls?"
"OH GROW UP, SINESTRO."

The series has been great but this episode especially knocked it out of the park. (not)Tom Hardy Bane excitedly saying "I'm stomping on your fish! Stomping!" is basically poetry.

I don't know why but "It is I, the Superman from Kryptalon" slayed me.

It's hard to pick a favorite character in this - they all have moments.

I'd be worried if I were "Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" - this is already doing a great job of telling HQ's break/escape from the Joker

Series continues to bring the goods. This week introduces us to Harl's family, who seem straight outta Goodfellas, and as Noo Joisey as they come. Plus!

"How much of this am I hallucinating?"
"Just me. Weirdly, the passed out guy with the boner and the plant driving the car are both real."

Only a few episodes left and it's somehow become my fav recent comedy series. Episode 11 is all about getting the gang back together to help Ivy. Highlights include:

"They've...POISONED..Ivy!"

"Those pricks!"
"Yes. But it's nice to see they're recycling."

Holy shit at the ending though. Even by Gotham standards, things are ever so slightly up the swanny...

(Super Bad) Friends Episode 12 aka The One Where We Finally Discover What A Monster Ivy Really Is when Superman and Wonder Woman send the gang to the Phantom Zone.

"Poison Ivy! Did you do this?"

"We didn't do it! We are not responsible for the tree monsters! I secretly watch NASCAR, I take long showers, I think paper straws are stupid and get too soggy! I was excited for Jazz Fest!"

This show is a delight.

WTF was that ending :blink2:

I KNOW RIGHT?

It'll be fine, it's fine, everything's fine. They'll get right back up, everyone will have a good laugh then spend the next 25 minutes beating the living shit out of the Joker till there's nothing left but a bloody white smear, then go back to the mall and have a party.
