I dunno, someone who's directing experience consist of 6 TV episodes (3 Fargo, 3 Legion) and one film, "Lucy in the Sky", which has a 23% rating on Rotten Tomatoes maybe makes you think just what Paramount thinks of Star Trek.

Or counterpoint:

They use more than a 30 second IMDB search to make hiring decisions?

Further counter point, they need the money for Pine and Hemsworth so spent less on a director. Of course I'm being pedantic and thats probably not the case.

I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness and I remember fuck all about Beyond, so I'm not overly bothered by this news but will watch it when it's out on home viewing.

I’d like the next film to explain how going into a black hole sends you back in time for some reason.

Same way they've already explained before - the black hole sucks in everything including time.

Where is the Tarantino version of Shatner going medieval on a Clingon's ass?

All the press is finished for "Once upon a time in Hollywood" now so he doesn't need to talk about Star Trek any longer.

Noah Hawley's saying that this film will probably have a new cast:

So then, would you be doing it with the cast that’s already in place, or would it be a new thing?

HAWLEY: It’s still early days. For me, it’s definitely an a new direction, but it’s still early, in terms of who exactly would be in it or what the characters would be. I don’t think of it as Star Trek 4, to be reductive. This is a new beginning.

Asked if the film would involve a new cast, he responded, "Yeah, I think so. Yeah."

Pressed if anyone from the cast last seen in 2016's Star Trek Beyond would return, Hawley added, "It's early days. I don't know. But new characters often involve new cast."

I rewatched ‘09 and Beyond fairly recently. They already feel dated, and you can see the seeds of Discovery in them. Plus in retrospect the (mis)casting wasn’t exactly great. I’m genuinely surprised that they’re aiming to bring back that crew for another go, but I’m not holding up much hope that’ll it be worth watching. Particularly with JJ Abrams involved.

In terms of the Kelvin timeline movies, I thought all of them, while not especially top tier movies in terms of story/writing etc, were still really good fun, mostly due to the surprisingly good cast. They all seem to fit into the roles really well - Pine made a pretty decent Kirk and Quinto is actually a great Spock - the same goes for Bones, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov (RIP, very sad). Perhaps Pegg is just a bit too silly/slapstick in his Scotty role, but besides that they all did a great job of reprising classic, well loved, nostalgic characters.

I'd quite like to see another with the same bunch. :)

The Khan remake was the weakest of the trilogy. It just felt needlessly slapdash with plot holes that could have been fixed with some decent writing.

The guy was a war criminal from Earth's history. Even if they did not know his name someone must have said "hey, doesn't he look a bit like that evil villain from the past who we learned about at school?".

I can forgive the sloppy physics to fit a plot. After all, the Enterprise managed to get to the centre of the galaxy pretty quickly in STV. But dodgy physics, inconsistent characters, and bad writing together do not get overlooked for some neat effects.

With the remake I guess the writers have decided to mix things up by making the even numbered films the bad ones.
