Gaming Predictions 2020

Recommended Posts

Too soon? Relax, this can still be used for things that definitely can't be confirmed in the next 24 hours, whether that's because of release dates or whatever. :) I've started threads like this on Boxing Day in the past, so chill.

Nintendo announce the Game Boy Classic Mini - built-in games, Lithium battery, no GBA content.

The new Xbox gets an exclusive updated edition of Minecraft

Someone compares Elden Ring to Dark Souls

Remake or re-release of NieR Gestalt or Replicant announced

Drift Stage is still not released in a "complete" form, still in Early Access by December 31st 2020.

Final Fantasy VII Episode 2 news before 2021

Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie: The Game

Yay! Time to embarrass my future self with my total lack of insight on the one subject I know anything about...

--

Last DLC character in the current season for Smash Ultimate is from Fortnite.

Kojima Productions announce their next game. To all intents and purposes it's Silent Hills under a different name.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has way too much going on in it, to the point that it loses its laid back vibe and is a massive disapointment.

Both PS5 and Series X launches have two of the most dreadfully uninspiring game lineups in memory, but Microsoft 'win' the window with greater hardware sales by virtue of Gamepass.

The Last of Us 2 has a very sad bit in it where one of the characters plays a song on a guitar.

We hear absolutely nothing about Breath of the Wild 2.

But Nintendo do announce a new one of those games that all us oldies have been clamouring for. Most likely to be F-Zero, Wave Race or Pilotwings.

Playdate is ace! For about two months and is largely forgotten about by the end of the year.

Forza Horizon 5 is a launch Xbox One X game. It's set in Japan. The single player side is still a mess.

Nintendo release Mario Kart 9. It's full of character and cosmetic DLC.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is released, is critically panned and is a commercial disaster. The next chapters are all cancelled.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is announced.

The PS5 launch lineup is propped up with 'next-gen' ports but unveiled with some incredible looking games (Spiderman 2, God of War 2, Gran Turismo, release date 2022)

The console also makes a big song and dance around being the home of VR, along with a Half Life: Alyx console exclusive reveal.

Microsoft gain some traction again with a more powerful console and the excellent value game pass.

First party content still doesn't quite have the mystical allure the PlayStation brand has.

Nintendo have a very software focused year, rumours swirl of an actual Switch successor but no details.

Metroid gets its first airing, no BOTW 2. Super Metroid gets a lavish remake/reveal a la 'Links Awakening'

Rocksteady show us their new game finally goddamit! (Being far too hyped for it now I find it not to my taste!). A new Arkham game is unveiled developed by the Origins team.

2020 sees the return of (announced, not released):

Prince of Persia

Legacy of Kain

Kid Icarus

Advance Wars! (Pleeeeease)

One or both of the new consoles launch on 20th November so they can do the 11/20/2020 or 20/11/20 date thing.

GTA 6 announced as either Vice City 'Re-imagining' or set in the 80s.

New Zelda delayed until April 2021.

The industry as a whole finally decides to drop:

Crafting mechanics in non-crafting-based games

Stealth sections in non-stealth games

Levelling systems as nothing more than padding

Uncharted-style auto-platforming

Sonic Adventure/Uncharted-style run towards/away from screen while exciting things happen in the background/foreground sections

Uncharted-style Press-Forward-To-Squeeze-Through-Nook technology™

Anything else that can be prefaced with "Uncharted-style"

Oh, wait, this is the predictions thread, not the hopes thread. I guess we can just safely predict the above will continue apace, then.

Hopeful prediction: Disco Elysium sparks the development of a whole combat-free RPG genre, much as Telltale heralded the puzzle-free point and click.

Microsoft and Sony announce cross save / progression / play across all multiplatform titles for Series X and PS5.

EA tries to finally get on the Switch with Burnout Paradise for Switch

GTA V and Red Dead Redemption for Switch

E3 2020 announced as final one

Goose Souls announced (a soulslike Goose Game obviously)

Panel De Pon added to Tetris 99 package.

Nintendo announce a new Nintendo Online title in the same way they did T99 (maybe F-Zero).

This is almost certainly what will happen,

I expect.

I'd sooner put my money on:

Square Enix unveils a Legacy of Kain reboot, it looks sublime and everything we hoped for. Subsequently Final Fantasy 7 Remake turns out to be a a commercial disaster. Because it's made by the Japanese HQ Square Enix itself, Square Enix decides to double the budget for FF7 Remake chapter 2 and instead cancel the Legacy of Kain reboot, and close and sell off Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.

Nintendo

Ports of Super Mario 3D World and Wind Waker/Twilight Princess double pack announced and released.

E3 is a big blowout of Breath Of The Wild 2, releasing in March 2021.

Bayonetta 3 info in January direct, releases this autumn.

Shin Megami Tensei V is released at the tail end of the year.

Given how close Nintendo and Microsoft have come recently, they both announce a GoldenEye remake - coming out for both consoles next year. (Wishful thinking, that one)

Sony

PS5 releases in November with Horizon 2 and PS Kart - Sony's version of Mario Kart. The console is £399 and is sold out until well after Christmas.

E3 teases new Spiderman footage. But only a brief teaser, no actual footage.

The Last of Us 2 is released to critical acclaim, but at the end of year, people admit they preferred the first game.

Microsoft

The Xbox SeX is released 2 weeks after the PS5 - Microsoft suck up the cost and price it at £399 as well with 6 months free Gamepass.

They go all out at E3 showing numerous new IPs - most of which are still a long way off, but are designed to show their efforts to broaden their catalogue.

Halo Infinite is the best Halo since Reach. But not the second coming Microsoft hope.

Misc

Stadia is quietly canned about halfway through the year. Google promises we haven't seen the last of it, but goes away to rethink it's strategy.

After the critical and commercial success of Jedi Order, EA announce Knights of The Old Republic 3, with Bioware developing.

The Sonic Movie bombs hard and becomes a meme for a generation.

Someone compares Elden Ring to Dark Souls

Quote

FromSoftware only released its acclaimed action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019, but the studio isn’t done with the current console generation just yet. Releasing in 2020, Elden Ring is the next game from the studio, directed by Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki with the creative input of A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin. We will return to a dark fantasy setting, much like in Dark Souls, but make no mistake: Elden Ring is a different beast. Here is everything we know about Elden Ring so far, including its combat, setting, structure, and when we’ll be able to get our hands on it.

Published January 2nd, 2020. -_- Dark Souls confirmed for inventing the "dark fantasy setting".

Edge has a cover with the Xbox Series X on top of a PS5, after the critics heap praise over Microsoft's new console which is consider leaps and bounds over Sony's.

Resetera forum goes into melt down with the news of the power of the Xbox Series X.

343 Industries confound everyone to produce a Halo that takes the original game, and raises the 30 seconds of fun to the max.

Nintendo reveal Wave Race.

@Jolly is completely wrong about Animal Crossing. In fact it turns out to be the best in the series yet. It also sells a shitload of Switch consoles.

Jumpship's Somerville is finally released with everyone praising the animation as the best ever seen in a videogame. It also goes on to win lots of awards.

The Last of Us Part 2 reaches the papers for the wrong reasons, over some extremely violent scenes in the game.

The Daily Mail also complains about the lesbian love story, and the nude scenes.

Xbox Series X hits retail at the end of November. Comes in at £499 and will include 3 or 6 months Game Pass Ultimate.

Naturally the free code will only work with new accounts, and upgraders will be shit out of luck.

ah, I wondered where this thread was when last year's one was wrapped up! Alright, I'll have a crack:

- Phantasy Star Online 2 will be universally panned upon its English release. This will be because it's not really the original game - It has daily rewards and a bounty system that makes Destiny 2 blush, it has a whole bunch of F2P money gouging (not strictly P2W, though), and it's a whole lot more kinetic compared to the original.

- Doom Eternal ends up being not as good as 2016. Everyone including myself is dead sad about it.

- Cyberpunk 2077 will be a good game. but just good. Gets 8's and 9's across the board, entitled fans scream that it's awful and it should have been a next-gen title because "of course it should be!".

- Half Life: Alyx will be decent, but will get panned because you need expensive VR kit to really enjoy it.

- All Epic exclusive games that are due to be out this year on Steam will have the sales equivalent of a wet fart - Borderlands 3 included.

- Destiny Year 3 will continue to be mediocre. Year 4 will exist, but just be a bunch of piecemeal Destiny 1 content while they continue working on the new IP. Everyone will be fed up.

- Both Gen 9 consoles are out this year. They'll get COD, a bunch of mediocre Gen 9 games and slicker ports of Gen 8 Games (namely TLOU2 and Forza). Switch still sells gangbusters.

- Following Slay The Spire's success, Something that's already available in Early Access for PC will be in the top 5 of the RLLMUK GOTY Awards due to a Switch/Console port. Nods go towards Hades, Dicey Dungeons, Temtem, and Noita. Conversely, PC players will thoroughly enjoy Death Stranding.

- World of Horror will also be a banger. I haven't included it in the above because it's not out for PC yet either.
