Planetary is another must-read as well.

But it is a lot of inside-comics. Works much better when you’ve immersed yourself for a few years to get the references.

Sandman is less so, though being a story about stories about stories its still pretty strong on allusions, they’re not all quite so silver and golden age (and draw on a wider range of influences).

NEXTWAVE. Agents of HATE.

Because this is what they want. Yes a lot of references but done in a way that you won't care.

See. It tells you everything you need and it's one self contained story that never got a sequel because Marvel are complete shit rags. Thankfully this version of Machine Man finally showed up again in Iron Man.

Just read it

Yes. I know it's Warren Ellis. I can give up Transmet but I can't go as far as cancelling Nextwave.

Having (partially re-)read Nextwave last year I will second that - it is hugely entertaining nonsense.

Speaking of which, 'entertaining nonsense' is one of my favourite things in comics, so it you want to try something a bit different then The Goon and Chew are a couple of my favourites (though I have to be honest and admit that I'm actually yet to finish either, having had a few years where I just didn't find the time to read anything comic-wise).

I'll also secong Saga, and I'm also a big fan of the Mignolaverse (with Hellboy, BPRD, etc), though that's not anywhere near as (tonally) irreverent.

I've still got a page from Fell up on my wall. Conflicted....

Atomic Robo as well, has a similar feel to the Goon and Hellboy.

I love me some Atomic Robo

Where’s the best place to buy full Marvel/DC type graphic novels from? I already have Civil War, Red Son, Batman Year One. I want to get Immortal Hulk, Michael Bendis’ Secret War, the Death of Spider-Man, and some Miles Morales, etc. The problem is finding what I actually want. A full collection of the whole story, rather than individual comics. It’s a confusing nightmare

Speedyhen and Booksetc are the best and cheapest places to get collected edition comics.

Just finished reading Batman: The Long Halloween. Have to say I was a bit disappointed. I know it is supposed to be Batman “the detective” but no one seems to actually do anything. The story just moved along without Batman, Jim, Harvey et al having any real agency on events.

Catwoman and some of the other characters also seemed to be pretty much shoehorned in without any real purpose. I am assuming that this is a plot thread from some other Batman story out there. Shame, had high hopes.

I am not a fan either, to be honest Jeph Loeb is incredibly overrated and has also managed to write one of the worst comics of all-time.

Any other good recommendations? I’ve not read anything I’ve enjoyed more than year one and dark knight returns which are probably also the most obvious. I did quite like Batman vs TMNT  though for a bit of fun.

I’ve enjoyed Saga but think there may be more volumes out now (prefer to wait until they are in larger collections.

I recently read the first compendium of Fables and was really fantastic and you get over 50 issues of it for only £35.

That’s the one, DC seem to be releasing a lot of these kind of books now and it’s a great and inexpensive way to read some classic titles.

I've read this a dozen times, and every time I wonder why it's held in such esteem. There are some nice touches, but I'm still not entirely sure how the ending works. It's almost like a scooby doo episode, "it was him all along and he's mad".

Glad to know I'm not the only one mystified by its popularity

I don’t like it much either, I don’t think Jeph Loeb has written anything that’s better than average and with Ultimatum, he’s probably written the worst comic of all-time.

I still really like Superman For All Seasons. I'm definitely fonder of it than I am of The Long Halloween, which I found a bit disappointing when I finally read it not long after The Dark Knight movie came out.

He’s got a kind of bland, middle of the road style, a lot of his stuff is just fine but not great. I quite like Hush, but I suspect that’s because I read it at an important moment in my life and it’s the first big Batman story I read issue by issue as it came out. Also I’m a sucker for Jim Lee art.
