Essential local multiplayer games

Recommended Posts

Another vote for Heave Ho. We play a bit of Road Redemption, simple, easy and has enough randomness to keep it entertaining. Plus sticking C4 to trucks doesn't get old too quickly.

We still play Goldeneye (albeit emulated) with the occasional game of Track & Field on the N64.

Sportfriends is great for people who do not usually play games. It is a bunch of mini games, of which Super Pole Riders is the standout game for comedy value :

Johann Sebastian Joust is also cracking. Basically every player has to try to nudge each others' controllers whilst protecting theirs.

Johann Sebastian Joust is funny, as it is quite coy about how you are supposed to play it. 'Jostle' my arse, it's obviously intended to provoke all out assaults (but done ever so carefully).

My preferred tactic was always to put my controller on a shelf and tackle my son. That was a few years ago, mind. These days, with him approaching my height, such horseplay is likely to result in me losing a tooth and putting a hole in the wall.

it's amazing... but yeah it's probably not easy to get the required stuff - saturn/multitap/up to 7 pads/quake/duke nukem (i think those are the right games?) not sure if the 360 version is any good these days.

Was it not on Exhumed as well?

Awesome thread. Request please though. If people could put platform(s) they've played the games on that would be helpful. I'm having to google almost everything.

Thanks!

This would be really helpful if people don't mind! Else when I have some time I can do some research and update the original post.

Yet another recommendation for Heave-Ho (Switch). Utterly hilarious and with real staying power, although it does get a bit tricky later on.

As well as that, my completely non-gaming wife and I enjoyed what we played of Super Chariot recently (Switch), which was going for peanuts last month. It's strictly two-player co-op however. Another Wife-Friendly game is Until Dawn (PS4). I controlled the character but we took it in turns to make decisions. It was pretty fun as I purposefully always chose the stupidest option which was bound to end in certain death, while she was a lot more sensible.

Lastly, there's an overlooked puzzle game called Tumblestone that's available on everything going but is still great fun. It's sort of like a Bust-a-Move clone but more of a puzzle, as you have to pop the blocks in the right order otherwise you reach a dead end and have to reset. In 4 player mode, with all the boards adjacent to each other and each person having to solve the puzzle the quickest without cocking it up, it's fantastically tense. There's a few different game modes, too. I think it cost me about 99p.

This is 90% off on Switch in the weekly sale, making it all of £1.79. Worth it!

Mount Your Friends

It's on PC so I don't see why they don't port it to Xbox One and PS4.

If you like same screen platforming brawlers like Towerfall, Samurai Gunn is well worth checking out IMO. It's like Smash but pared down to the absolute essentials and with really tight, responsive controls and a really cool samurai flick vibe to it.

possibly. But seeing as we're getting some specialist interest japanese games being released on the consoles anyway it shouldn't really stop them.

I mean it's on Xbox 360 but apparently too hard to port becuase it's on XBLA so BC isn't straightfoward?  At least that what I have read on the internet so it must be true.

To everyone that recommend heave ho, many thanks, it's bloody great. Me and my two gaming friends had a hilarious evening with it the other day and I'm sure it will go in regular rotation.

The circus level with the spinning wheels had a terrible record on it as we were having too much fun just spinning up loads of momentum and flinging ourselves about.

One thing we couldn't work out though; we unlocked the basketball mini game by grabbing on to a rope but didn't see a single one on any other level and we finished all of the normal run levels. Is there a special trick to finding the ropes?

Overcooked, though I find it mores stressful and frustrating than fun.

In the Humble Bundle, I got Think of the Children. It looks very much like a mobile game upgraded for the PC (though I could be wrong). You play a parent tasked with looking after six kids while also doing other tasks, such as tending to a BBQ, setting a table. It's pure chaos and had us laughing (and shouting) last night. Be warned though, the difficulty curve is high almost instantly.

Another one going cheap at the moment is Iron Crypticle. It reminded me very much of Gauntlet and oddly, Bubble Bobble. It's a four player top-down dungeon crawler-twin stick shooter. There are some very light RPG elements, a cat who runs the shop and killing things often gives you fruit (this should make a comeback). There's also a guy who appears who is unstoppable, if you take too long.

Played 3 hours of towerfall yesterday with 4P.

It's pretty much the perfect local multiplayer game and i'm unsure if anything can come close!

I've got a free code for Think of the Children, if anyone wants it. More available here:

Spent far too much money on the ps store after reading this thead thanks guys!

Probably a daft question but is there any suggestions for any coop games on the ps4 that allow guests/local players to also join in? Ideally wanting to play against/with my brother and his partner.
