It’s a cool trick, shame it’ll probably be banned before we can see it in a race.

You’ve got to love grey areas in the rules. Apparently it helps to stop the tyres cooling down on the straights and would take other teams half a season to copy. This has to be the most left field trick since the McLaren F duct.

How utterly tedious are Autosport's videos? Their presenters have some of the most boring voices I've ever heard. There's never any shred of enthusiasm on display and the content is laborious in the extreme. I've lost count of the times I've failed to make it all the way through their videos. Fuckin hell.

Mercedes seem confident its within the rules, and apprently have kept the FIA informed of what they were doing.

It must make such a difference in the starights with your tyres not scrubbing speed due to the toe.

The more I learn about it, the more I think it's in the rules. The only slightly questionable part of it, is whether adjusting the toe can be considered adjusting the suspension or not. Such an interesting day though. Love that F1 is back and we have some tech drama :D although this really doesn't bode well for an interesting title battle.

What's weird to me is that I find it hard to believe no one in motorsport has tried anything like this before. Anyone know if they have?

Yeah. Magnussen was in the car yesterday. You know what that means.

Give this man a prize!

16:22 Grosjean's had our first proper oopsy, spinning at Turn 4 and hitting the wall backwards! He's recovered to the pits, but today's highest mileage-coverer will be slightly chastened by that issue.

I 100% agree. I've been an Autosport+ subscriber since it launched but this year I have cancelled by sub. I think they've had a lot of staff changes and replaced the talented people with hopeless ones. It reminds of kids at school trying to do a magazine. Furthermore,  Autosports videos remind me of Moss' Board Game Review show on The IT Crowd.

The articles on Plus are utter garbage and often  bullshit clickbait nonsense. Some genuine examples I can remember were..

Title: 'The secret weapon behind Mercedes success'

Content: Nothing secret, they're just good at their jobs

Title: What does a Le Mans winner get from playing iRacing?

Content: He enjoys playing iRacing

Title: The dark secret behind a failed GP2 racer

Content: There litterally wasn't one. He wasn't that great and was a bit unlucky at times.

They also seem contractually obliged to say the name Georgio Picola every 5 minutes.

Although to be fair, the article they did on Mercedes new 'DAS' system was ok, albeit you didn't really learn anything new from it.

The grey areas are what the designers live for. Adrian Newey says new technical regulation day is like Christmas morning as a kid, and he loves nothing more than poring over them to work out the difference between what they’re intended to mean and what they actually say.

I don’t think there are any good online F1 news sources any more. Autosport used to be great, and I quite liked GPUpdate when that was a thing.

I used to love James. Allen’s website. Think I looked at it twice since it moved to Motorsport.com - was just an unpleasantly designed place and really put me off ever going back. Is it still going?

Oh yeah that used to be an excellent site. I think it still exists but is a shadow of its former self. James Allen is I think the chairman of the motorsport.com network now so other people write his site for him last time I looked. I think motorsport.com will eventually go bust, they’ve bought everything up and don’t know what to do with it - look at the shambles that happened with Autosport recently.

If anyone other than mercedes win a race this season, it'll be a miracle.

If Valtteri and Lewis share the wins equally and Max gets all the 2nd place finishes, can he still win the championship? :D

No.

He'll lose 7 points to each of them every time they win but only gain 3 of them back when its that Merc's turn to finish behind him.

There's 21 races (in theory) so Lewis would win 11 for 275 points and get 10 3rd places for 150 making 425.

Bottas would win 10 for 250 and get 11 3rd places for 165 making 415.

Max would get 21x18 or 378.

Yes I am putting off other work, why do you ask?

Full disclosure, had completely forgotten that.  But yeah, as Carrot points out and you'd also clearly realised it can't change anything, except maybe allow Bottas to beat Lewis. (lol).

Oh well. Max is just going to have to win a few then and Red Bull do sound quietly confident. They gave Merc a good run for their money in the second half of last season so hopefully they can get out of the gate a bit quicker this year and make things a little more interesting.

And I am done with Formula 1.

Ridiculous to have another "illegal" car that will run away with races because the lawmakers are so inept.

I highly doubt that the DAS system is responsible in any significant way for Mercedes performance so far. In fact, as far as I can see, Valtteri didn't pull or push the steering wheel once during the fastest lap of the week.

Just to be clear on the rules changes , the DAS system hasn’t been Suddenly  banned from 2021 . It was always banned , the steering wheel circular motion rule has been in there since at least October .
part of the joy of F1 is seeing what designers do to innovate and come up with new ways of finding critical tenths . I’m with @mexos . Well done to Mercedes for coming up with something to potentially squeeze the last drop out of the current configuration .
