The most uncanny thing was the locations, which felt exactly like the games in some cases. The starkest example for me was that crowded street they end up in in the pickup truck when it all kicks off. But there were loads of example - Joel's house, all of the QZ, the bombed out road at night just outside the wall etc, plus of course the very final shot.

The bit with the crowded street only differed in my memory from the game because one of the pedestrians didn't glitch out and levitate vertically up the side of a fire engine that got in their way. :D

EDIT: I found the video I made at the time on the PS4!

Spoiler

Also, I hope this bit makes it into the show...

Listened to the official podcast (which is great btw) and it's already got me wanting to rewatch ep.1 as apparently there were lots of easter eggs sprinkled throughout.

Would you recommend listening to this before watching the episode? Haven't had time to view it yet. Deciding which way round to listen/watch.

I’m not sure I agree with that, yet, can’t quite put my finger on it though, general mannerisms and expressions perhaps. Early days though and it’s probably just a case of getting used to her portrayal vs game character.

I wouldn't want a carbon copy of Ellie from the game - so far Bella puts her own stamp on the character which is a good thing.

Just a heads up for anyone eager to give the remastered game a try after watching yesterday’s opening episode.

Sony have released a two hour timed trial on PS Plus Premium, to coincide with the launch of the show.

No absolutely not. Do not listen without seeing the episode first. Major spoilers throughout

So irritating that they lock it behind Premium, not that I want to download a full game for only 2hrs.

That’s fine, I don’t think her portrayal is bad in any way, but for me, Pedro is Joel but Bella is not yet Ellie.

So, ignore the virus/setting etc. The core of LOU has always been about that central relationship. That’s what makes it stand out, understandably they don’t quite get there with episode 1.

Am really curious how those that know nothing about the games make of it. I mean based off this episode, I wouldn’t blame them for thinking ‘oh no another walking dead’.

Thankfully I think the hype/acclaim/word of mouth will be enough to get people to stick with it for another episode or two which is when I would imagine the banter/relationship truly begins.

A solid 6.78 / 10. And why was it 80 minutes later long?!

Ha, it took me a minute to figure out what the final song was trying to convey, I have to admit.

  Hide contents

I didn't know the song or even the artist, not sure if it's because I was only born in 85 or because I was never exposed to Depeche Mode growing up. So I knew it was relating to the code but wasn't initially sure what it was trying to say.

I quickly figured it must have been a song from the 80s because it would just make sense for a cliffhanger as the code means 80s song = danger. But it wasn't an instinctive reaction.

They probably needed to pick a song everyone and their mother knows is from the 80s even if they're a young 'un.

Agadoo?

I thought episode 1 was lovely. I was weirdly nervous going in, as I hold the game in such high regard, but it exceeded all of my expectations. My wife enjoyed it a lot as well, and she's only seen snippets of the game over the years, so really wasn't familiar with the material.

Going a bit "full immersion" at the moment, playing through Part 1 (again) on the PS5, watching episode analysis videos on youtube, and listening to both official and unofficial podcasts today. Not sure I will keep that up for the whole season, but it's taken such a long time for this to happen I just want to absorb it all right now.

What a great start.

Can we give a shout out to John Hannah? He was superb in that opening scene.

The other scientist is a recognisable “that guy” actor and the part seemed a little beneath him!

They absolutely nailed the casting of Tommy. I gather the show will use a flashback structure so I’m sure we’ll see plenty of him going forward. Not to mention the potential for season 2.

I actually think Part 2 could result in a 2nd and potentially 3rd season of the TV show. There's a lot happens in that game.

If they remove the bits where you sneak around in grass waiting for dogs to pass, I think they could easily cover it.

Did I imagine it or was the ‘you’re about to be spotted’ humming sound part of the soundtrack? I thought I heard it a few times and it kept triggering me. Very clever if so.

I reckon the storyline of the 2nd game will be season 3 or 4.

I think they’ll (game spoilers)

Spoiler

use the time jump between games to tell some of their own stories and let the actors age up a bit. Gives everyone more Pedro time too.

I think anyone who complained about Bella Ramseys casting before we even saw anything can get fucked after that first episode. She nailed Ellie imo.

Exact opposite for me. I thought the show was excellent with the exception of Ramsey. She’s terrible. Why on earth didn’t they go with the actor who played Joel’s daughter for Ellie. She was exceptionally good.

That was great, really looking forward to seeing the rest of the series, especially some gruesome clicker action and how the bond between Joel & Ellie develops.

Also, any program that ends with Depeche Mode is a winner for me.

Us DM fans have been spoiled of late, 2 songs in the public eye in just over 12 months. Must be a record!

First it was an episode of Hawkeye that ended with the instrumental Christmas Island, and now Never Let Me Down Again.

Fingers crossed for an upcoming Star Wars project to end a Jedi/Sith battle with Get The Balance Right.

I played the game when it came out but have forgotten almost all of it except the main characters names. So I went into this pretty much blind and I thought it was decent enough. Fairly standard end of the world stuff with a HBO budget and production values - not a massive step-up from The Walking Dead and the like.

I'm sure I'll stick with it but I expected a little more from a Sunday night HBO drama.

It would be brilliant if you had misremembered their names and you continually used their wrong names for the entirety of the thread. e.g. Jobe and Erin's casting was on point. And we never correct you.

Just me.

I thought this was good but not great. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in but I found some of the QZ stuff felt a bit low budget. Can’t quite put my finger on it but it felt like a set rather than a living breathing…QZ. It was nice to see a bit more of life in the QZ though.

It’s also obviously hugely spoilered by having played the game. And my daughter and I are annoying my wife and son by exclaiming: ‘That’s exactly like the game!’ the whole time.

I like that they extended the intro as it’s a brilliant and iconic start to the game which they improved upon. I mean it’s great that they’re paying homage by almost exactly recreating certain scenes but I hope they continue to diverge and go their own way whilst preserving the Joel/Ellie relationship. I don’t mind the odd nod but I don’t need it to be super gamer fan service although there’s clearly a market for that.

On the Joel and Ellie front, I thought they made a great start. Some nice interactions between them and whilst Ellie seems a bit more feisty from the outset here, I think it works well. Pascal has nailed Joel and it’s cool they’ve given him a slightly different motivation.

I’m unconvinced. I’ve got the uncanny valley thing but in reverse.

@El Geet you are not the only one, I did feel QZ was a bit low budget. I was a bit shocked really. Such a high budget and it all looked a bit.. well I’m just hoping the proper meat of the game show looks the part.

I don’t recommend trying this, I did and then went on to buy the game, and it’s not on offer at the moment. I’ll probably buy the PC version as well
