Halfway through episode 3 and, fucking hell, it's just phenomenal!!!

Offerman is absolutely perfect. The

Spoiler

meal with Frank, Joel and Tess

is magnificent!

EDIT: Just finished episode 3. I really don't have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to describe how utterly incredible that was.

EDIT 2: At the end of the episode I realised that I own both the shirt that Joel is wearing and the tee that Ellie has on. Thanks InsertCoin!!

Is there any way of watching this series in 4K? It’s available for purchase on iTunes but only in HD.

Sky. 4K HDR

HBO Max via VPN.

Joel felt much more brutal. When you’re controlling him and I didn’t want to pull the trigger at that point, like many others l’m sure. Completely agree with JPL’s comment that the Infected weren’t enough of a threat except the mob in the city. Also that Ellie & Joel’s relationship isn’t given room to deepen, or isn’t convincing enough, to justify the ultraviolence purely on that basis. Makes his motivation seem much more about pure selfish daughter substitution, so it feels like the combination of playing the game and watching the last episode is a better blend and also more shocking as you aren’t in control.

Thought the “robbing her of her sense of purpose and uniqueness” came across much better than in the game.

Episode 4 was great.

Episode 5 was just fucking incredible!!!

Listening to the podcast after each episode is really interesting and hearing Mazin and Druckmann explain changes from the game for TV is fascinating.

Overall, this was a failure for me. It seemed to be trying to explore human relationships on a background of a post apocalyptic world, and did that reasonably well in the case of episode 3, the two brothers in episode 4, and even Ellie and her friend in their episode. But those episodes were at the expense of developing a convincing relationship between the central characters, as others have said. And that left the ending undercooked. The end of the last episode had a similar feeling to Game of Thrones in that they didn't really do enough on screen in the preceding episodes to justify what happened at the end of the final episode.

Oh man that last episode hit way harder than all the others, they pulled it off. Yes I wish it had been longer they could have easily split the first game over 2 series but tightening up to what we got will stand the test of time I think, it's concise but still hits all the major points of the game and it does it well. Bravo.

I've not finished the first season yet, but, knowing how the TLOU Part II (the game) pans out, I wonder if the second season of this will take place between the first and second games?

Fill in some blanks for what happened between Part I and Part II.

That, or TLOU Part II gets split into more than two seasons. The "event" that acts as the catalyst would be a season ending event in my mind!

Kermode and Mayo absolutely loved this. So much so they’ve done a podcast episode about it. Simon in particular is gushing with enthusiasm.

This is the first real impression I’ve heard from people who haven’t played the game which, if This Place is any yardstick, is more positive than people who have.

They’ve said it’s in the same category as The Wire. Fuck about.

I’m glad a lot of people seem to like this, but I personally find the hype hugely disproportionate. It’s a decently acted, big budget series that is riddled with loads of problems, that most of the people who are gushing about it seem to blindly ignore.

I haven’t seen The Wire, so I can’t compare, but I can only imagine something like Better Call Saul would absolutely blow Kermode and Mayo’s minds.

I feel like I’m in the minority, which is cool, but I wouldn’t rate TLoU much higher than The Walking Dead, for example, and it really doesn’t get anywhere near the level of Breaking Bad, The Soprano’s, etc.

I did enjoy it though and I really hope they get the time and budget to address everything about it that disappointed me for season 2. I’m just a bit baffled at the level of praise it’s receiving.

Its everyone else who is wrong.

How can this be 😜

What you on about? Where did I say anyone was wrong for enjoying it?

I’m just interested to hear why so many people are ignoring all the glaring issues with it and gushing about it so much. It seems to be getting a free pass, which a lot of other things don’t.

Dude I didn't say that. I just loved the perfect line there about being in the minority fitting into the "no its everyone else who is wrong" meme

I was trying to make a joke. Lesson learned.

And again with your popular thing is popular reply. Que?

Opinions and taste.

And, done! Phenomenal!

The casting was spot on. The cameos were nicely done.

The atmosphere was right, the locations were right, the music, the feel. Just, yes!!!

Mind blown! As with the game, I'm in bits. The dialogue still hits, the repercussions of actions will be felt in future seasons.

Not quite sure what to do with myself now. Play through the game again? Start watching again from episode one?

Ah sorry, I’m not aware of the meme! Make a joke, no problem!

Maybe I’m being a bit blinded by the forum to be honest. I’ve just checked on Metacritic and it’s only got a 6.2 user rating, which seems far more reasonable. I was under the impression if was reviewing better than any series in history, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Yeah, it’s no big deal. I’ll leave it if nobody wants to discuss my points. I was just interested.

Roll on season 2 (with massive improvements!).

Up to episode four now, really enjoying it. Not played the game and I'm not really sure what you actually do in the game, this just feels like it was made for TV.

Episode three is a real statement of intent isn't it? Stunning. Anyone know what that simple and beautiful string piece is in it? I've heard it before. Good to see that actor off white lotus again as well, he's brilliant.

Episode five, that's how you do it! Grinning all through that big set piece. I was so wrapped up in the human drama I'd forgotten about the background threat so it worked perfectly. Glad I waited to binge this.

I’m afraid it didn’t quite do it for me in the end. I mean it’s good just not great - aside from Episode 3 of course. I thought the casting was bang on and I enjoyed the performances. I’ve banged on about this enough, and it’s impossible for me to know for sure, but I feel having played the game recently has been a negative. I don’t care that they’ve painstakingly recreated the exact scene from the game. I just found that distracting. Impressive for sure but just fanboy fodder - what’s the point?

Neither my son nor my wife thought it was much to write home about either. Much to my total fan girl daughter’s annoyance.

I will definitely watch Season 2 mind. I’m still only about halfway through that game but there’s a lot they could do with it.

I’m pleased it’s done well though and that others have loved it. It’s got a lot going for it and deserves success even if it’s definitely not top tier TV for me.

Didn't stick the landing for me either, mainly because it had emotional beats from the game that it had to hit, but ultimately didn't do enough during the show for them to be particularly impactful.

Spoiler

I'd have had far more fighting against infected and raiders (not to mention setting infected on raiders as the pair become more of a team), but by diminishing the threat you also diminish the need for a cure.

Could have done with taking out the DLC and the mum flashback, allowed the sections to flow, may have helped the relief and levity of the giraffe scene to work. But I think the power of that is more down to the shifting perspectives also.

I may be crazy but the very last scene also seemed to lack the punch it needed - I didn't get that Ellie didn't believe Joel but decided ultimately that she would go along with the lie because of their bond...my missus just thought it was a really weird sudden ending of nothing. I'll need to rewatch that scene on youtube to see if I'm miss remembering it (or if I conjured that up in my mind due to the power of the previous scenes/game).

Overall though it was an enjoyable series, with some frustrating moments and some pretty great moments along the way.

Finished it. Perfectly watchable by the end after a shaky start but on the whole (baring the episode 3 outlier & left behind) it was a bit disappointing given the source material and budget they had to play with. Like is that it? Ok I guess.

Create a screenplay / script / shot list for a 9 episode TV show based on the playstation game the last of us. Can't be too scary or show gore. Change spores to a different infection method. Don't show infected that much.

On the whole: 6/10. Episode 3: 10/10

I still think Druckman should have been brave enough to hand his baby over to someone else completely to reinterpret the material for a different medium.
