Call of Duty: Warzone

I am suggesting that we start a new thread on Modern Warfare's Warzone - the new Battle Royale mode that launches today.  Since the mode is free to play, cross platform and the lifecycle will seemingly go way beyond the main game, I think it makes sense.

IMO, this is looking mighty tasty.  I have watched a lot of in-depth videos last night and this morning and I haven't been this hyped for a BR in a while.  Here's a few that showcase a lot of details on how the main mode works, what you can buy for in-game cash, etc.  We're also going to find out about another mode called Plunder later today.

HYYYYYYPED!!!

I don't think it's up yet. It unlocks a few hours earlier for people who own the new COD and for the other scrubs it unlocks at 7pm GMT.

In-Depth Information On Downloading

For owners of the full version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Warzone will replace the previously named ‘Classified’ panel in the Main Menu. A one-time early access will give Modern Warfare owners the ability to download Warzone at 8AM PDT. For Modern Warfare owners who are current and have the most recent title updates, the download will be a 18-22GB. Once download is complete, Modern Warfare owners will “unlock” the Warzone panel, which was previously classified, and can enter the lobby and play.

For non-owners of the full version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Warzone will be available to download free in respective first-party stores starting as early as 12 PM PDT. Head to the store and search for ‘Warzone.’ Choose Call of Duty: Warzone to download. Warzone is a 83-101GB download for new, free-to-play users. Download could take up to several hours depending on bandwidth, service provider, additional regional factors and will vary by platform.

My biggest gripe right now is that there seems to be no solos - which is usually my go-to mode.

There seems to be some confusion over this. I’ve seen some reports saying it’s Trios only, and a bunch of others saying you can do Solos and Duos as well.

Higher FOV kills your framerate on anything less than ridiculous hardware.

Tests on Apex (default console FOV 70, default PC FOV 90) showed that playing at 90 FOV on a base PS4 didn't affect frame rate significantly, and that playing at 110 FOV (Apex's max) didn't affect frame rate significantly. I play Apex at 100 FOV on a PS4 Pro and the frame rate is stable 60 fps. No streamer players console Apex at anything less than 100, and lots use 110. All PC streamers use 100+.

And Dead Silence increases FOV (a bit, but it's clearly noticeable) on console in Modern Warfare and that doesn't kill the game.

Most videos I've seen seem to say trios only, which would suck.

I do wonder if the reports saying it has solos and duos are just wrongly assuming it’s the case, as opposed to actually checking to see if it’s possible.

I'd be surprised if there was no single mode.  Having said that, I'd like there to be larger 8-10 teams.  The most fun I had in PUBG were 10 person teams, it really made it feel much more like a protracted battle against the opposing team and introduced plenty of new tactics and possibilities.

Edit:  This site suggests the following:

And trios is the only mode available in Call of Duty: Warzone. Infinity Ward does not have solos or duos options in game at launch. The reasoning for this is to ensure quality matchmaking and not separating matchmaking into many different pools with so many options or combinations of team styles.

Players can opt to play on their own or with a duo through Squad Fill settings, but they will be competing against standard trio teams in the same matchmaking pool.

I'm talking about Modern Warfare, Apex has much lower system requirements and a lower player count.

I was using Apex to show that raising FOV need not kill rate rate on console. And anyway, Dead Silence on console MW noticeably ups FOV without seeming to hit performance. I'd take the higher Dead Silence FOV all the time given the choice. Wouldn't everyone?

In any case, my original point was that cross play will put low FOV PS4 players against PC players who can up their FOV to 100+ (assuming they've got a reasonable PC and/or don't mind lowering visual settings to compensate). This gives a huge advantage to the PC player. PC players can also opt to lower visual quality to make players easier to see etc, again giving an advantage.

If the servers are going to place me in matches with PC players, it's only fair that I have access to the same options. Close quarter battles between someone on 100 FOV and someone on 65 FOV aren't a fair fight...
