I still think they put the water pack in because the open worlds they created were difficult to navigate and making a mistake could send you so far back that it was an easy way to save yourself if you made a mistake. Sunshine arrived a year before the Sands of Time and this was Nintendo's solution to easing some of the difficulty in 3D platformers.

No way, the water pack came first and they built a game around it. It’s why every stage is either filled or surrounded with water.

Sunshine was clearly a Mario game first, and yes I agree it represents experimentation. But movement is too twitchy and imprecise; Mario does the backflip too easily; the high speed at low stick tilt makes accidentally falling off edges a more frequent occurrence than in other Mario games.

Don't get me wrong, it’s still great fun, but it can be frustrating.

Were the dynamic pools of paint-like substance always so pixelly in their edges? I remember them being smoothed out automatically in to curves.

Hoovering up Star Bits is still amazingly satisfying even with the Joy-con version of the pointer. I think that pointer controls in the Prime trilogy might work pretty well.

I agree but only if what is implemented follows the Splatoon model. The pointer drift is pretty bad in Galaxy. Perfectly fine for the task at hand but I think for Metroid Prime you’d have to dial right down the sensitivity to being just corrective, fine grain aiming like Doom, or it’ll just be annoying.

Does anyone remember when Sunshine was first unveiled and loads of people thought there was some big visual trick to it Nintendo would later reveal - involving 3D glasses? Something about there being more to the graphics than meets the eye? Was that on this forum? Some said the graphics were too disappointing for that to be all there was to it - that some aspect was being held back. Others said it was was it was, that what we saw would be what we got. Unless I’m dreaming that...

(That I can clearly remember the online chat preamble to Mario Sunshine’s release is making me feel extremely not-young...and that my former life existed in forums.)

I remember being sat about fifteen feet away from a typically cheery Miyamoto at Tokyo Big Site when they announced it. Everyone who wasn't not from America were crying about Wind Waker as we left, so Mario taking a holiday looked fine and was largely forgotten.

Three things about Sunshine:

1. How the actual fuck did I deal with this level of camera jank in 2002?

2. No invert? Really Nintendo.

3. I ha e just had to kill a Giant Blooper by individually pulling off its arms one by one then pulling off its lips while it makes noises indicating it's in distress. This is a lot darker than the jaunty music would really suggest.

The sound effect when one of its legs twangs off is one of my favourite in a game ever.

Yeah this was a big deal on the edge forums. There was one or two pictures that showed what looked like two frames over lapping which people latched onto. It wasn’t motion blur but it was something that looked off at the time. Ultimately it probably was just a badly taken screenshot.

This screenshot I believe.

I think you might be right about that screenshot. I remember it happening and actually tried finding something about it recently. I'm pretty sure there was at least one journalist from IGN or GameSpot pushing the idea at the time.

Edit: Found reference to it! Although not what I was thinking. Maybe it was the IGN forum I was thinking of. And yeah, it was that image that seemed to spur the idea.

One quote in there:

That could account for why the graphics didn't look too hot.

Ouch.

Admittedly I'm very early but I already remember why I didn't like Galaxy.

Having finished the first universe it's been 2 things.

1 - Tiny planet worlds with an awful camera that gives you no view of where you're going and jumping

2 - Frantically clicking through so much dull story text I think I've spent more time doing that than watching @Fuddle finish the whole of Super Mario World today.

I'm sure it gets better from here but the first 30-60 minutes have been absolutely dire.

Personal preference and all but I think Galaxy is one of the best games ever made. I found Galaxy 2 too difficult, but the original is so good.  Yes there's a slow opening but it's nothing (in a world where people say The Last of Us gets good after the first 4 hours).

Loving revisiting Mario 64, and not seen any of the issues people have described regarding frame pacing or 4:3 display, and the Oled screen really shows off the colours.

Nintendo were actually researching 3D displays at that time (it’s the reason that the GC had a digital video port) so it’s not a completely daft idea.

Yeah, you're right, and I'd allowed myself to forget about it again. There's actually reference to Penny Arcade mentioning something about a 3D display for the GameCube in that thread. I found this making the connection with it being for Sunshine.

Why Mario Sunshine looks terrible in still-screens... 3D display for Gamecube!

Not sure on the specifics, but all the info is in Gabe's posts near the bottom of http://www.penny-arcade.com.

This explains why Mario looks so boring and has those weird depth of field effects. It also explains world hunger, if you think about it.

What the fuck was it with people saying it looked terrible? That wasn't the general consensus at the time, was it?!

Sunshine was knocked for poor textures at the time. But graphically it’s held up well.

Gameplay is borderline unNintendo though. Do some really quite technical platforming, fight the camera and oh, you’re at the top and hit the wrong button? All the way to the bottom you go. I am not even at the hard bits.

Sunshine looked technically really good at the time, a real showcase for the power of the gamecube (and it still does impress in that sense) . I think the art style was never very strong, a lot of it is downright ugly, and as result now it doesn't match with how great every other 3d Mario looks, if you didn't know better you'd think it was a spin off made by ubisoft or somebody. Obviously it plays really badly in comparison to every other mainline Mario game.

Mario 64 at the higher resolution here has a stark beauty to it.

I thought the opening cinematic for Galaxy was really quite grim as well. Bowser takes out that little town with no mercy.

Is it just me or is the Wing Cap a complete arse to control?

Trying to get the Wings to the Sky star on Bob-omb Battlefield is proving to be a complete bastard. The last set of coins of high up but the game doesn't draw them in until you're close by which time I realise that I'm too damn low then have to circle around for another attempt and just argh.

You don't need to steer to get that star. You point and shoot the cannon and that's it.

Not the best example in my personal case, Last of us before the DLC might be my pick for overrated game of both the last 2 generations. :)

I'll push in further but at least I've confirmed I wasn't completely mad back in 2007 when I tried someone else's copy probably this far and never played it again.

Yes, Def stick with it, it's a really brilliant game.  (And yes, TLOU isn't worth the praise it gets, I agree totally).
