My mate finished this on hard Friday night  Started right up again on badass around lunchtime yesterday and holy shit it looks tricky but he's almost to the end again after stopping around 3am right before the Grandmaster. It's definitely worthy of the reviews

This is brilliant fun! And just the right side of difficult (on Normal). I'm halfway through Area 2 and haven't felt frustrated once.

Thanks for the thread because i never would've discovered this on my own.

Yeah, this is something really special.Highly recommended.

Also - for those who've got it. Try the CRT filter. I know we all hate them as garbage. I do. I might be way off, but to me, on my TV this one is really something special. Doesn't replicate what a CRT did, but what it felt like a CRT did. If that makes sense. Makes me feel like I'm playing it through time.

Finally got round to starting this last night.

I played Blazing Chrome last year, and thought it was on par with the 16 bit Contras and Gunstar Heroes it was aping, but this is better.  I just finished the Messenger, another very good game, but this is a degree of greatness above that.

If you look in the Streets of Rage 4 thread, you'll see the opinion crop up a few times that SOR4 is the best in the franchise, possibly the best in the entire genre. I'm just past halfway through the initial 4 gangs (unlockable 5th for a finale? maybe...) but my feeling so far is that Huntdown is at that level. Every short stage has the feel and pacing of an extended 80s action movie gunfight - like the Nuke factory bust in Robocop or the hospital finale in Hard Boiled. I've gone through about 10 boss fights so far, each one perfectly judged and individually distinct from the others. The sound design, especially the pitch perfect mix of 80s overacting and underacting is flawless. And the visuals, this isn't just a good looking game, it's masterpiece. It's a mashup of Flashback and Elevator Action Returns, so you couldn't pick a better starting point IMO. But then layer on the advantages of modern hardware and the 25+ years of pixel art technique development that have happened since.

There's proper back and forth exchanges of fire, ducking in and out of cover, plenty of opportunities to go high or low to flank enemies. There's 3 briefcase stash collectables per level, sort of like Super Mario World's Yoshi coins, but sometimes one of them is just being carried by a random grunt who starts to run when he catches sight of you, forcing you out of cover to give chase. This leads to frantic rolling gunfights, full of improvisation and opportunity to showboat.

Can't stress enough how good this is.

This is excellent. Reminiscent of Metal Slug.

I was thinking Metal Slug crossed with Rolling Thunder / Shinobi. The mixture of the different weapons and only being able to aim horizontally.

I feel like whatever your genre favourite is you'll find the spirit of that game reflected in Huntdown. It's a love letter to run and gun games as a whole.

This is criminally overlooked. There has been a glut of retro themed shooters in recent years (Blazing Chrome, Xeno Crisis etc), but this beats them all. Some of the set pieces are up there with the best from Metal Slug, Gunstar Heros or Strider, and it just plays brilliantly. Tough but fair, with nice platforming and traversal. The art and animation in the briefings reminds me of the ones in X-wing or something. The cityscape backdrops are stunning. The music amazing. It's just full of character and a real joy.

Yep, this was criminally overlooked in best-of-year lists. It deserves to be right up there. A belter of a game. So well designed. So much fun to play. It's fantastic.

And on sale in the eshop.

Not by me, was number 2 on my 2020 list.

I was happy to take a punt on it at a tenner in the Switch eshop, but I'd have been very happy at £16. It's just an overall polished gem. And surprisingly long for a game of this type if you play on Normal.

Maybe next year's GOTY awards can have a 'Best 2020 Game That Sounds Like Yet Another Battle Royale/Survival Game That You Skipped".

This game is 100% my jam but I didn't even see a trailer until this week. Terrible name.

I’d forgotten I’d already seen this thread as I’d already posted the OP. Huntdown got mentioned in another thread recently when discussing authentic pixel art games. Id probably wanna get this as a physical copy id if it does happen one day on a limited run. I have the Blazing Chrome one already.

I’m sure this dropped at the same time as a load of other stuff (on Switch) so put it on ice (watch list).

Just to echo everyone else, it’s great. Very much reminds me of something that would have came out originally on an Amiga rather than arcades/consoles.

it’s dripping in atmosphere (and humour).

(can’t say I think it’s better than Blazing Chrome though.  Probs just my preference.)
