I like Far Cry games but the edgy plots and stupid drug trip sequences really sour the whole experience for me. This doesn’t look like that’s about to change, unfortunately.

The timing has never been better for them to go back to a Far Cry 2 style structure, which was basically a first person Souls-like before the Souls games were a thing. None of the first-person Assassins Creed knock-offs they’ve churned out since FC3 have been anywhere near as compelling. It’ll never happen, of course.

Two of the very best games of the last gen, Far Cry 2 and Dead Rising. Both had endless complaints about their unforgiving structures and mechanics. Both had sequels which stripped those unique elements back. Both are now bland as fuck and not worth playing. Never listen to players, they’re idiots.

How do you mean, Far Cry 2 was Souls-like? I remember playing it and thinking it was great, but I can’t remember it being anything like Dark Souls.

Just a reminder, because we should all know that Ubisoft is in fact a company that is harmfull to the industry and that they are happy to take five steps backwards as long as they make money.

The gameplay loop in FC2 is based around you navigating an incredibly hostile environment, with respawning enemy encounters which you have to learn and adapt to, while you gradually unlock safe houses (bonfires) around the map to make your journeys easier/shorter. If you die you’re dumped at the last safe house you rested at to try again. Ammo and health are severely limited, your weapons are constantly degrading, and if you have a safe house in a particularly difficult area, you can choose to upgrade it so you start with more health/ammo, etc.

It’s purely coincidental of course, but I‘m amazed nobody has has a proper crack at that structure again since the the Souls series became so popular. It’s an open goal.

That’s fucking genius. I barely remember it aside from enjoying it but that’s an amazing structure.

I can't decide if I wish that I had this much spare time in my life or if I'm glad that I don't.

Rumour is that this is a prequel to Far Cry 3. If you look at the picture of the kid he has an identical scar to Vaas over his eyebrow.

And the Vaas actor (other guy from Better Call Saul) has said he may get to play the character again.

I got FarCry 5 free with my streamer mic, so figured I'd make it the first game I streamed purely out of courtesy.

I really wish I hadn't. It was my first ever FarCry and sincerely hope it to be my last. I can't believe anyone could stomach more than one game of this. I only sat it through because of the stream. Interestingly it was by far my most 'successful' game in terms of viewership. I was averaging 8-10 viewers and made something like 80 followers out of that one play through.

Clint Hocking, creative director on FC2, is the creative director on Watch Dogs Legion. I'm really hoping he brings some of that FC2 DNA to it.

I clocked up a total of 19days 7hours 51minutes on Far Cry 5, even though I hated a lot of it. Same time spent on Far Cry 4.

It's all formulaic, but I love some Far Cry.

It's like I have a holiday home which is very familiar, and the place itself offers no surprises, but I still want to revisit every year or two. A two week holiday to Ubiland.

Can't understand at all why everyone's suffering through dozens of hours of these if they don't enjoy it. There are so many other things to do instead that you'll probably enjoy more.

I really loved Far Cry 5, it felt great to play and all of the systems came together in ways that were genuinely funny in places. But then every 4 hours or so it would give you a completely awful linear story mission that just completely destroyed the pace of the game and wasn't any fun at all. All the freedom, all the mopping up fun stuff around an island as animals and AI and vehicles crash into each other because of stuff you've done is just thrown out of the window for these missions. Sometimes these lasted up to an hour, an hour of you walking slowly in drugged up shitemares, or making your way down grey corridors shooting people as one of "the family" drone on and on and on about some A Level philosophy crap that purposely doesn't make a point in order to avoid being "political."

So it's only an hour, you can blast through that to get back to the fun, right? There's literally a little bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up as you go around having fun to tell you how near the next bad bit you are. This lead to me starting to dread being interrupted to be told for an hour why The Family are brilliant and absolutely not anything to do with Trump's America because that would stop far right cuntboys buying the game.

It totally ruined what was at times a really fun, properly brilliant, sandbox for me. I stopped playing it half way through and, unless I hear this has been removed from the sequel, I wont be going anywhere near it. Which is a shame because the first 3 games all offered different, interesting takes on this sort of game.

Thank you for treating my light-hearted, humorous dig at Ubi's notorious penchant for icon-strewn, open-World, fetch-quest gameplay seriously.

But it was a joke. I know they sometimes publish other game types. Your epic and deeply thought-through rebuttal has been noted, but ignored.

Because I don't really care. Besides - I bet you get special versions in Canada.

Apologies. Not directed at you then but hopefully my list reminds some people who really do think Ubi are knocking out the same 3-4 franchises over and over.

Far Cry 2 was fantastic, now that is a remaster we could do with.
