Things that make games feel complete

Playing PoP today something hit me, theres just little touches which really really add to the whole game and make it feel complete. When the camera moves the blurring and the noise, the way the camera automatically changes to a set view point and shows you something of interest or a set piece.

Games like Perfect Dark where you saw the guns reload rather than disappear off the screen, shooting out lights.

shenmue where you can turn off lights and go through peoples draws.

Mario where you can wall jump of any object.

Its just these little touches which just make the game feel more complete. For instance in PoP, without the noises and the special effects, it'd be a good game, but they'd b the feeling of the production values missing.

I like the way as driving games have gotten more sophistcated you get things like the brake disks glowing under braking, or the dirt collecting on the windscreen in CM4.

And in the likes of Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie etc when you go swimming the sound goes all muffled as it would underwater.

It would be even nicer if the camera wasn't so fucking shit.

Despite not really getting on with it, I think Metroid Prime really stands out on how well made and slick it is.

Oh yeah, the first time I got to Penandra Drifts(sp?), my just hit the floor, and I spent minutes just running around through the snow and shooting birds without even looking at where I was supposed to go.

Small writing in MGS2 when NPCs are whispering or in another room (not just difficult to hear but difficult to see too). MGS2 as a game mind was absolutely full of such perfections.

Becoming a seagull in Zelda TWW. Sea colour as well especally when a storm is coming in.

Beehives shaken from trees in Animal Crossing.

Hud reflections in Metroid Prime (in fact everything about the hud in MP)

Grunting when you climb things in Zelda OoT (and TWW). Using chickens to fly small distances.

CO backing music in Advance Wars 2 (especially Lash's and Senseii's)

In Mace Griffin, you can get these light emitting grenades thrown at you. When they go off, your vision blurs and a high pitched ringing goes off. Very auhentic. Aside from that, I love the fights in True Crime. Everything brakes, throw your enemies into an oven, and watch the thing blow up and your enemy running around engulfed in flame.

That sounds rather sadistic doesn't it :D

Getting a bomb out in Viewtiful Joe and holding it on your foot.

The Starbucks rip-off in Jet Set Radio.

Learning that stupid uppercut off the guy who gives you a job moving boxes in Shenmue.

But taunts are the best. Especially when pulled off effectively (and not done when you're about to get a face full of pummel).

Has anyone ever pulled of Dan's super taunt in Capcom vs SNK 2 without receiving such a faceful of pummelling?

I also like Joe Higashi's taunt. It's cheeky and fast enough to be pulled of repeatedly.
