Collectors' editions of games?

Recommended Posts

I've had no previous history of buying these, but this gen I've had the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy edition, No Man's Sky box set with art book & Horizon Zero Dawn box with art book.

I do like the NMS & HZD sets, but I have no idea at all why I bought the Fallout 4 thing - it's a nasty, bulky bit of plastic tat that's just been stuck in a cupboard for 4 years. However - just checked Ebay & it's interesting to see that people will still pay £80 - £90 for it, for some reason. If I can dredge up some motivation, I suppose I should flog it.

what's in that black binbag pouch in the Halo one?

It's all the Lore stuff - Halsey's journal full of entries on Spartans, AI, the Covenant, the insurgency. Also a pouch of other bits, Halsey's personal effects - keycard, files, test results, loads of other gear that I have no idea what it is.

I’m a sucker for an art book and a soundtrack. My only statue edition is The Last Guardian.

The one that makes me cringe is DOA Extreme with the cleavage mouse mat. Classy. May as well have had a bottle of Sex Panther in the box too.

Panty Party collectors edition lol!

It wasn't one I actually wanted, but I couldn't find another option for the physical game.

Very few this gen really. They used to be my go-to editions during the PS3 era, I've got shelves full of the things.

This gen I bought the nightmare edition of Bloodborne and the art book editions of Uncharted 3 & Horizon... The Horizon one is lovely I must say.

Actually one of the rarer games I bought this gen was Tearaway for the PS4, which came bundled with a free plush of the main character. Strangely it was never released in the US or UK so I guess that must make it one of the harder to find collectors editions.

Oh and right at the start of the gen, I bought the funny copy of Infamous which included the jacket. That's nice.

I've certainly slowed down my purchase of those sorts of things though. For one I've bought far fewer boxed games this gen as a whole. I still buy 90% of the big releases I want in shops, but I've found that digital sales have largely taken the place of second hand purchases and indie releases make up a huge chunk of my play time these days.

Here's my lot. Not really special editions, they were exactly the same price as the standard game, just bought on release. They don't tend to do that these days.

The Fumito games came with postcards, Silent Hill 2 came with a Making Of DVD and Dark Souls came with a small art book and soundtrack CD, but I've never paid over the odds for anything with added models, etc.

I'm not talking about those versions of games which come in a similar size of box to the standard editions

Oh, guess these don't count then. Still, I quite like 'em and the thread needs more pics. :)

The PAL region Fire Emblem Fates has what is probably the most desirable special edition I’ve ever seen as not only do you get Birthright and Conquest on one cartridge, but it is the only physical release of the Revelation “path” in existence as far as I am aware (I think the NTSC version came with a download code).

Does the Ni No Kuni Collector's Edition count? It's not massive, but not that small either.

The wee art book is excellent TIDY, has a complete description of all enemies, tales etc. High quality stuff.

Just been looking up the value of some of mine. The PSP Persona games are OMFG expensive now. Now if only the two I have would offset the cost of all the other shite I collected.

Persona 2 collectors sealed sold for £160 last month, I think P3 Portable Collectors was something similar unsealed. I was a little surprised to say the least.

I have almost all of the first-party Wii-U collector's editions but I regret it a bit now as they basically have a couple of shelves to themselves. I used to have 30% staff discount on this stuff so it used to cost me quite a bit less than usual but it's all space I'm struggling to reclaim now.

My wake-up call was this stupid bloody thing:

Never again. Glad I managed to sell it in the end.

Ah, I was forgetting I had a GAME special edition of that Fatal Frame game for the WiiU - because it was the only physical copy within 100 miles or online. Cards and an artbook, I think.

And I've picked up a couple of Ninty 'Amiibo' editions - Mario Maker, Yoshi for the WiiU. But I'm trying to cut down on amiibo tat.

Zelda: Link to the Past,

Yooka Laylee ( Limited Run ),

Bloodstained : Curse of the Moon ( Limited Run ),

Daemon x Machina,

Xenoblade Chronicles DE,

Windjammers ( Limited Run )

Some of thos emight have been a bit over a year, but yeah, I am a right sucker for proper collectors ed's, and they're all still sealed as I'm a right mu, there are probably more, but it's late.

The last ones I bought were Halo 3 Cat Helmet Edition and Alan Wake Book Edition. The cat helmet is still on display in my man cave but otherwise physical tat always sits there unused and untouched.

I also realized I don't really like having bonus digital tat DLC, so nowadays I always buy the cheapest edition available with as few bonuses as possible.

Now that I think about it a few years back there was one collector's edition which did tempt me a bit. The Fallout collection which came in a nuclear bomb. It's gloriously silly:

It was like 20 euros  at some point at my local indie game shop* but I still didn't go for it though.

*It's called Nedgame. Yes, for real.

I get the World of Warcraft expansion special editions on occasion, but not for every expansion. Typically they'll come with a soundtrack CD (which are on Spotify), a mouse pad (which I don't use), an art book (which is what I'm really after) and some in game stuff, which is always nice to have.

I bought the collector's edition of Assassin's Creed Origins and gave a statue of Bayek, which I really like, but otherwise I don't buy any of the big expensive statue versions of games.

I thought Nedgame was a chain?

Ha, busted. Yes it is. But unlike every other chain their shops feel like indie shops. Way back when I still bothered with physical it was my preferred shop.

I remember years ago getting the BioShock one that came with a statue (I think it broke straightaway) and wondering why I bought it. Those big boxes come with tat that I’ll just stuff in a cupboard and forget about.

I got the GTA V one too (just remembered). I can’t remember where that is either (or what tat it came with). We’ve got so little space in our flat that, even if I put to one side the actual cost, I can’t justify the space stuff takes up. The only reason I still buy physical games is that they are cheaper (and sellable and returnable). They don’t even come with manuals anymore.

I’ve got the same Ico and SOTC but mine are much more battered-looking! I had that Silent Hill 2 version as well but lost it somewhere.

I miss games having nice non-special edition boxes like that.

edit: and the Dark Souls! 360 version though.
