I shall keep on trucking...

Yeah, I’d stick with it until the hub. It takes longer than it should in my opinion. It lets itself down a bit early on by pushing all linear story.

I've never played Psychonauts, should I play the original or the second one? It's unlikely that I'll play both, unless they really suck me in.

Definitely this one then. But try and watch a story recap of the first two games to have an idea of what's going on.

There's only one other game though?

The intro video shows it all as well really.

There was a VR game as well.

But you’re right, the intro on this one covers it all off.

Rhombus of Ruin is the set-up for Psychonauts 2 though.

Well i didn't play it and wasn't in any way confused or felt I missed anything so it's not exactly a requirement to enjoy this.

Played a  bit more last night and really really enjoyed it. Big smile on my face, lots of chuckling and oh that soundtrack. Just clicked more I think and maybe was too tired when I started, who knows. But I'm looking to lots of fun ahead.

Just got to the end of

Not to de-rail this thread but I noticed that I was dismissing a lot of games that I started while tired so i now avoid playing new games unless I am fresh and have a good hour of solid attention to give them. That means I start fewer games but I seem to be sticking with them more. I think the nature of release times doesn't help for us in Britain where quite often a game will release early evening, I'll download over tea time and then start it up just before bed, when really I should be winding down before bed and wait until the next day to start a new game.

Has anyone experienced this game intermittently dropping HDR?

I'm playing on a Series X with a LG OLED B6 and I get a few HDR drops on each session I have with it.

I've never had this on any other game. 😢

Totally agree with this and usually try and avoid in recent times but with kids sometimes have to just go sod it...then promptly fall asleep! ;)

Sounds odd, anyone/where else reporting it?

I'm playing on PC/OLED so not got it on (I think) as Windows HDR is bobbins usually.

I can't find any other reports at the moment. I'll do a full restart on the series x and see if it persists.

Finished this last night, and crossposting my final thoughts from the Games You Finished thread:

I've said it before in here, but the original Psychonauts is one of my favourite games of all time. A fun platformer wrapped in incredibly inventive storytelling and art design, so I was expecting to love this.

Unfortunately, it's been a massive disappointment. The core platforming is passable, but a lot about the gameplay just feels archaic. It's got one of the most clunky combat systems I've ever encountered, with crap attacks that take ages to recharge, poor control mapping (the weapon wheel in Ratchet and Clank makes so much more sense) and a diabolic dodge mechanic which is nigh on pointless. The game is choc full off pointless collectibles - there are a few different varieties but they really all just merge into one and are a chore to collect.

The story doesn't fare much better - some of the best characters in the series (Coach) get very little screen time, the writing just isn't that funny (and the conversations are slow and often not worth pursuing) and all the main characters essentially have the same "I couldn't save my friends" dynamic going on in their minds. None of the levels come close to the heights of the first game. The game is constantly interrupting you as well.

Very disappointing. It feels like a 15 year old game with a lick of paint.

Yeh, I'm sorry to report I played further last night, it all opened up, and ended up switching it off after a few more hours as I just got bored of it again. Endless bloody conversations that go nowhere. Just let me bounce around. Not sure I'm going back tbh at least for a while. Eek.  :(

Have you done the Psi King level yet? Please do that before you give up on it. It’s one of the best levels I’ve ever played in any game. It probably helps that I was a raving trip head in my youth though!

Decided to give up on this. Got to the mail room level and I have just had enough. I love the world and imagination but the platforming, general gameplay and controls are frankly dogshit.

Shame because I fucking loved the first game.

I’m similar, I quite enjoyed the story but I found the play forming very clunky and hated the combat - I used the accessibility options to make the combat quick & easy, it’s was still annoying just less frustrating.

As you say much of its design feels old fashioned.  It’s a shame as I love the original, and that’s what pulled me through this to see where the story went.

What makes it one of the best for you?  It looks cool but what your doing in it isn’t any different to 90% of the other levels.  Learn to interact/use thing, now do it three times (because that’s the magic design number).  I don’t think any of the levels in this live up to the inventiveness of the levels in the first.

I finished this last week and loved it. The story and visual design were wonderful. The gameplay is maybe straightforward but passable imo, the only fiddly aspect for me was constantly switching powers in the more involved later levels.

The difficulty was okay, very easy tbh because from very early on there's nothing stopping you stocking up on healing items and auto-revives. I decided to invest all the purple currency into upgrading the pouches for those items, which meant I was rocking a shedload of healing items and auto-revives, which made it near impossible to die.

Some of the levels were incredibly impressive and I loved every bit of bonus background story content. The writing really is top-notch imo. Overall, I loved it but I can see it's not for everyone.

@The Bag As I said, I was really into LSD when I was younger, so that level really resonated with me. I think it’s an absolutely excellent game anyway, but the culmination of everything and the obvious real life experiences of the designers really came together on that level for me.

The only things wrong with it are the amount of mini cutscenes that break up the gameplay too much and the combat, but I’ve made myself invincible, so that doesn’t bother me too much.

I honestly think the creativity on display is so far ahead of most other games, that it’s up there as one of my all time favourites. It looks absolutely stunning in places on the Series X as well.

You can go into the back room, through a shelf on a desk iirc.

Cheers thought I tried that but may have gone in the wrong one. I was deep into a bottle of red at the time so that may have affected my ability.

I think it might even be where the letter flies off from? Or next to the typewriter? It should be relatively obvious.

Well, when sober maybe :P

I got up to the boss fight at  the end of the food cooking bit and after a few attempts where I kept getting done at the last part I just switched it off again, tedious is not the word. So disappointing as I really want to love it but aaarrrggghhhh. Psi is next isn't it then I'm done, if I can bothered to do the boss...again.

I know it is, and mostly blame Nintendo, but do you have any more theoretical background as to why three is the magic design number?
