Well RE4 must be this gens best looking game. It's doing some insane stuff in those pictures. I love the new ideas behind the game (just read the description of one scene.... TEXAS CHAINSAW!). RE needed a change and a new direction and its gotten it. It just goes to show how powerful the GC is. The little machine that could.

Forwards/backwards and rotate? Pretty much all first/third person games have the same basic system for moving. It'd probably need a strafe, though.

Yeah what Squirtle said. Ghosthunter plays like a first-person shooter, as in you have strafing and look abilities. If RE4 has the same controls as RE, as is rumoured here, you'd just have back/forward, rotate and some kind of auto aim, which contradicts the bit that says it plays like a first-person shooter.

being chased by man with bag on head = being chased by Nemesis in resident evil 3

The more things change, the more they stay the same

I 100% agree on the mall location that Discostu mentions. There must be loads of great locations they haven't explored- hospital, school, themepark, high street (explore various shops, expand on re2 a bit), houses (NOT mansions) etc

Whilst I'm moaning, some different zombies wouldnt hurt either- like Zombie kids in Dawn- have to aim low

Anything exciting happen in the spinoff?

Not that I remember, but it was ages ago and I didn't play it all the way through anyway because I didn't like the way it played. :D You're on a ship with Leon though (where he subsequently disappears and you have to find him) so it may even tie in with RE 4 because it's supposed to take place somewhere between RE2 and RE: CV I think. I'll see if I can find more about it...

I guess the answers just aren't there because Capcom isn't that bothered about narrative, despite the fact that in the first two games it was what captivated me the most. Maybe Capcom WOULD just ditch the whole Umbrella storyline mid-swing...

Same here. I really enjoyed the story to it, until I just got thoroughly confused.

Trying to follow the story now just makes me feel stupid (more so).

For more info on just how convoluted it is:

The plotline for the whole of RE: Gaiden is explained here: http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbcolor/fi...gaiden_plot.txt (you'll need to copy and paste the URL into the browser). They're supposed to be members of and organisation consisting of former S.T.A.R.S. members and ex-Umbrella employees trying to bring down Umbrella. Personally I've completely lost track what's supposed to have happened throughout the games despite owning them all. :s

Like most spin-offs the story will probably be forgotten anyway, especially as it was developed by a UK company and I don't think Capcom had much involvement with it.

There used to be a timeline for the RE (which I don't think included Gaiden when I last saw it) on anewblood.com (now residentevilfan.com) but I can't find it now.

I see your point, sprite, but I think you miss the point.

RE is all about the evil Umbrella corporation, the T/G Virus and the ongoing story of the characters against this faceless corporation and its genentically engineered mutants.

This seems to have moved away from that.

This begs the question: Why? To what end? I don't think Mikami will want to move so radically away from the backstory created over the last 5 games.

I don't think we've seen anything like everything here.

But this game, with a different main character would be excellent. But as a Resident Evil game, it seems a little odd.

I'm in agreeance here - what this game seems to be is decidedly removed from what Resident Evil is - they might as well have started with a fresh IP. It sounds very promising, never the less, like Resident Evil Chainsaw Massacre! The fella with the sack on his head looks demeted. All I can say is - I hope he gets to kill one of the previous main characters, if they do indeed make an appearance.

One man concern, though - I hope they don't include an aiming reticule, as it would become a first person shooter in that case, and that wouldn't be all that scary - it would be MUCH cooler to have no crosshair and jst you aiming, and hoping your bullets hit. Think of the tension as you frantically shoot at an approaching chainsaw-wielding maniac, with no game-assist in trying to shoot. Provided the enemies aren't too fast, this could actually work wonders. Just, please don't make it a FPS!

Also, just a thought, but maybe the stuff that was previously shown will become known as Resident Evil 3.5? who knows if that stuff will still be included (the environments looked incredibly gothic, and no hint of the ghost-like enemy in these new shots), and if not maybe it was again a case of the team scrapping what they originally came up with and starting again?

Note the laser pointer. I loved it in MGS2.

The gamefaq links aren't working at all. Irritating. Could you maybe quote them? or give manual site directions to them? (Sorry to be a nuisance)

Sorry- I pasted in a tonne of crap from gamefaqs, but it filled all the space and was only a tiny %

I find the gun-jumping opinions in this thread a bit surprising.

I also don't agree that RE is all about Umbrella, zombies and viruses - to me, it's all about suspense, claustrophobia and survival horror. I see no reason why it won't be the case with this iteration.

A lot of you people seem to think Resident Evil will end soonish with a great Umbrella finale.

But you are wrong. Resident Evil is going to live on for decades to come - I'm sure they'll kill off Umbrella soonish, but don't forget that similar organisations have already been mentioned, like the one Wesker works for now. Umbrella will die but the menace, and series will remain with the new corporations they've added to the storyline. Probably with new characters and epic storylines.

You won't see the end of Resident Evil for a loong time.

And I don't know why a lot of you are critising the direction they're taking it in. We should be dancing around the campfires with glee that Capcom are FINALLY doing something new with one of their key IPs. Of course I hope they still make Resident Evil games with the emphasis on the old style survival horror, but anyone who thinks RE0 didn't feel amazingly old and rehashed needs to take away the blinkers. For me Code Veronica was the pinnacle of that style of survival horror and I'm glad they're taking things in new directions.

Also I have a feeling that they may be doing it because they have quitea bit of competition in the genre these days - games like Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren are doing the rounds. Maybe they want to innovate before the competition to stay ahead of the game?

I think the thing for a lot of fans is that they've invested a lot of time in the franchise's characters and storyline so hearing that all that's been thrown out the window in favour of some wierd, more supernatural direction is only naturally going to receive a disappointed response. After all this time to be told it's 10 years later and there is no Umbrella Corp is something of a letdown considering this is Resident Evil 4 - it's akin to setting Halo 3 on an Earth undersea research facility, with an some anonymous, ordinary grunt killing mutated half-human/half-fish schoolchildren instead of the Chief and his epic war against the Covenant. It could still be completely ace but a frankly bizarre switch in terms of storyline...

Indeed. I actually didn't read that much about the plot for fear of spoilers. If that's true then it will screw up the suspense of the plotline a lot. But to be honest I reckon those rumours are untrue, or a deliberate seeding of a fake plotline by capcom. It'll generate more interest in the game is they get people arguing about the plot and stuff.

Exactly. After Resi 2 (which I adored) I was fully psyched up to take the fight to Umbrella. Playing through Jill's escape from Raccoon City was nice and fresh in Nemesis, but by the time Code Veronica rolled around I began to feel that they were sidestepping just a bit too much.

I imagined the eventual Resi 4 to be a multi-character switching scenario featuring Leon, Claire, Jill, and Chris getting to the bottom of things in Paris (and undoubtedly fleeing the area to the accompaniment of an apocalyptic countdown in the finale, naturally).

I'm not saying that Resi 4 will be a disappointing game because it's not what I expected and hoped it would be, but that in terms of the story I've become engrossed in, it will seem alien and something of a letdown.
