Run silent. Games where you command a submarine

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get a selection of submarine games.  Arcade shooters or sims, doesn't matter.

So far I've got:

Submarine Attack - Master System

Steel Diver - 3DS

The Hunt for Red October - GB

The Submarine - PS

Turbo Sub - Lynx

Underwater Unit - PS,2

Battlestations midway _ 360

Dive Alert - NGPC

In The Hunt - PS

On the way are:

Silent Service - NES

Poseidon Wars 3D - Master System

Can anyone recommend any more?  i'm only into console games, so won't be getting Silent Service 2, which only got a PC release AFAIK.

Anyone else play submarine games?

Terror of the Deep for C64? It’s more of a diving bell craft, but it was quite unique as you juggled maintenance of the craft (oxygen, fuel, generating energy) with navigation of the surroundings... that said, I never got very far in the game before everything went awry. :P

All three of those sound interesting.  I don't suppose Sea Quest made it onto any compilations on more modern consoles.

Don't know I'm afraid. There's also Seaquest DSV on the Mega Drive.

I remember that.

In a similar vein RMS Titanic.

Silent Service was originally a PC game and that's probably a better place to play it. Same goes for 688 Attack Sub.

Started as a micro computer game IIRC. OP was after console games though.

C64 right? I remember seeing it demonstrated in department stores. By the time I got a C64 it was out of print.

There's Harpoon on DOS, written by the naval guy who collaborated with Tom Clancy on Red Storm Rising and Hunt For Red October

And there are two games based on The Hunt For Red October - the original strategy game based on the book, and the later film tie-in (which is more of a shoot 'em up with Ocean-style minigames)

Seaquest - Atari 2600

Treasures of the Deep - PSX

Seaquest is a great little game and I still play it from time to time.

There's a neat trick you can use on higher levels where oxygen runs down more quickly. If you aren't ready to fully surface having just a bit of the tower of the sub above water will stop the oxygen counter from ticking down.

Are you emulating it?

This thread is beginning to remind me of this classic:

Does DEFCON count as a game where you command a submarine? Unfortunately, I don't think it fits your criteria, because you command squads of submarines, rather than individual ones. And it's not a console game. Also it came out in 2007 and so is only pseudo-retro rather than genuinely retro. :(

It doesn't count in the sense that I won't be picking it up, but it counts in that it sounds worth a look.  I'm interested to see the submarine games  people played on their computers anyway.  I spent many hours playing Silent Service on a Dos PC in the 80s.

My NES version has been dispatched.
