Xbox Series X | S

Recommended Posts

I have an Xbox One S with a hard drive full of games that I never play and a subscription to Gamepass, with access to games I never play, that expires sometime in 2022.

I like this setup and was wondering what the advantages of spending £250 upgrading to an Xbox Series S would be.

Things I like the sound of:

1) Better graphics

2) Quicker loading times

Things I don’t like the sound of:

1) Limited space for games

2) In 12 months feeling like my console is last gen

I am not really bothered about buying new games as I have an impossible backlog already. Essentially I like the idea of upgrading my Gamepass Jukebox until they fuck us all with massive subscription hikes in a couple of years when we’ve got no disc drives.

Has anyone else done this and, if so, are you happy with your decision?

Go!

I think in your case, when you already have the gamepass machine I'd hold out until either

a) An S with more storage exists

b) The X is cheaper.

Because really it's just those loading times that you'd actually notice if you're that kind of gamer.

They won't because there is competition. People will go elsewhere.

Suppose in the end depends what you actually want 4K? 1080p? If you are not bothered about 4K go for it. The chipset in the S is next gen - just the X is more geared towards 4K gaming with a more powerful GPU. The processor is the same spec as is the SSD (lower capacity of course in the S). So don't think it will get "left behind" just the visuals won't be as pretty.

I guess the last thing to bear in mind is how many games do you have on the go at once? Will the standard storage be enough for your needs? If not then there isn't much difference in price between an S (with the official 1TB expansion card) and the X.

I was toying with idea of an S because of the price point and my use case. Then I got the opportunity to get a X and just went for it. Think I'd have been happy with an S too. Although it is nice to finally utilise my 4K screen here for 4K gaming at less cost than it would for a PC GPU.

It sounds as though you’re thinking about spending £250 to continue to not play any games.

No, it's like plugging in a USB 3.0 device into a USB 2.0 port - it will just run at the lower standard.

HDMI 2.0 can do 120Hz, just at 1080p (or 1440p, strictly). But not all HDMI 2.0 TVs support this.

Can you, or anyone, recommend a good HDMI splitter that does 120htz at 1440?  Has anyone experienced any latency with theirs?

The only difference between the two is one is 1080 the other is 4K. Depends on what you’re wanting in a console.  I had an S (and original), never got on with them, and I think that the Series S is a big leap over the S, night and day like a next gen machine should be. Fast loading times, quick resume, a far more snappier and efficient UI, as well as the next gen graphics and performance. The X has 1tb storage but it also has file sizes that are on average a third bigger than the S due to the 4K assets in its games. So the amount of games you can fit into an X over an S is less than simply double because of double the memory. Both console owners will be hoping that the SSD expansion drops in price over the next year.

If you’re the kind of gamer that frets about games dropping under 60fps and have an expensive 4K set up then it’s not for you. But if you simply want to access the next gen with a console that will be supported for many years to come and are happy with 1080 then definitely consider it. You might find that the improved hardware, UI and the S/X enhancements on some of your back catalogue will motivate you to dig through some of your pile of shame.

Correct.

I try to download all the shiny new games on GP so I can ignore them in favour of chipping away at miserable old clappers from years ago for whom the fun has long since evaporated.

I really want confirmation on this. Can't find it anywhere. I'll be getting one though when it's confirmed.

I can confirm it does fit, sort of. I've used the moga one for a while and as long as I tighten the little screw bits it's fine. It doesn't click into place nicely though, which I feel it ought to.

However, I'm stunned by how good the remote play on this is. I played The Outer Wilds and Forza in bed with remote play, and apart from some music stuttering on Forza it played like a charm. Really impressed.

If your TV supports 4k120, yes. If not then you have to consider if ,for example, you'd prefer 1440p120 over 4k60

I’ve got an CX oled so yea it supports 4K at 120. So just keep it at 120 then?

I assume Xbox doesn’t record party chat in game clips but I just did one on Fortnite, 1min vid of me and a mate playing duos with him on PS4 and me on Xbox..... it has recorded his party chat but not mine! Any settings I need to be messing with?

Nah, MS don't invade your privacy that way.

Someone mentioned where to find all your old 360 downloads rather than just searching for them individually - any idea where they are? It's been 7 years since I was in front of my Xbox so I can't even remember what I owned digitally.

If it’s like the One, go to My Games And Apps and then select full library to see everything you own that’s compatible with your console.

If you go to 'My Games & Apps', there is an option to view your full library (or something along those lines).  There are then 4 options (for me) which include the Gamepass list and 'Things you own' list and 'Xbox Gold' list.  That did it for me.

Ah I did look the, but I can't have gotten enough sleep last night as my eyes glazed right over the option.

Unfortunately it seems I don't own as much digitally as I thought. I guess these were the years 2005-2013, when I only really got Live Arcade games, with "full" games all on disc and all this was just fields.

I only got the S too so my discs are going to go to waste. Don't be too sad though, as they have been about 6000 miles away from me for the past 6 years.
