You can get a 2TB NVMe SSD for PC for a bit under half the price of the Xbox expansion so its probably just the traditional "memory card tax" that consoles have long suffered from

It's a smaller (and rarer) form factor SSD, so it's going to be more expensive than a standard M.2 before you factor in markup and the like.

I think I might have posted this before (sorry), but does anyone else routinely have issues with games not opening from the dashboard (on a series S but I guess the software is the same)?

Wondering whether it's just bugginess, but people rave so much about the XBOX UI that I doubt it. Could be the external HDD?

I get it all the time on my series S (without an external HDD tho) It feels like it’s unable to verify an online license and just hangs on the splash screen. Have to do a reset then it normally works.

Used Xcloud on my Mac for the first time this week. Doing a massive house reno so the consoles are packed away for a while.

Old man stuff I know, but I didn't realise that it was done through a browser and you didn't have to install anything. Just launched Safari, paired my Series X controller and was playing all the latest Gamepass releases in a couple of minutes. Just amazing technology. Occasional frame dropped here and there and the bitrate dipped a couple of times, but mostly solid, stable and completely playable.

Loved not having to install anything and just dipping in and out of whatever I fancied.

Incredible stuff.

Yeah tried it without the HDD and it happened again. At least I’m not alone I guess?

One of the more annoying things about the Series X|S is the length of time it takes to boot, and thankfully Microsoft have shaven 5 seconds off it. Rolling out to insiders.

I take it you’re being sarcastic as my Series X boots up faster than my TV. It’s always waiting for me by the time the screen decides to flick on.

Are you using standby or power save as your off mode? This is the later which takes (apparently) about 20 seconds before, now 15. The later is the much lower power one. The former uses more power and is basically instant on.

Are MS ever going to fix the broken energy saver download feature? I’m honestly sick of seeing a bunch of updates waiting to download whenever I turn the console on.

It's not just Energy Saver mode. Automatic updates just seem to be broken altogether.

Energy saving mode, but it still boots up quicker than my C7.

Downloading updates in Energy Saver mode is a strange one, it doesn't necessarily work the way you think it does.

Basically the Xbox turns itself on once every 24 hours to check for and install updates. That appears to be around 3AM. At that point it should download any "new" updates that have appeared but it will NOT continue downloading anything that is already in the queue. So if you are downloading a Game Pass game, or possibly even an existing update, that won't be completed by the automatic update process.

So sometimes when I think an update hasn't downloaded properly it's been because it's come out after that 3AM window. If I'm playing something regularly (every evening), there's actually a much greater chance that an update will land during the day and not get picked up until I turn the Xbox on.

I also suspect the 3AM "window" is time-limited, and those of us with a lot of stuff installed on our machines may be timing out before all the required updates have been detected. But that's much harder to prove.

Please god can the 5 seconds be the really fucking loud BWAMMMM that announces to the house I’m going to start playing videogames when I should be going to bed?

This feels like the sort of thing that would have inevitably gotten shutdown not that long ago but I don't know are Microsoft all that bothered nowadays.

I'll probably end up giving it a go just to see if it works and then never use it but its cool all the same.

It's been this easy for months.

I knew it was reasonably straightforward to setup and use if you were using the dev mode stuff but I hadn't realised it was this straightforward for people who didn't want to have to switch between modes.
