My Series X has a wired internet connection and is left on energy saver mode, which I’m told means it will download stuff when there is stuff to download and when there isn’t, doesn’t do anything.

i thought energy saver was the one that doesn't download stuff when it's off? (except it maybe checks for console updates once a day maybe?) although i'm not sure because i originally thought energy saver completely turned it off, but it doesn't, because i used to turn it off at the plug and the console didn't like it.

In energy saving mode it'll check once a day, I think in the wee hours? So if updates are pushed after that, it won't know until they time the next day. Although if it's every day then yeah, something isn't right. Not sure how often it checks in powered standby, whose name I forget.

I turned it on last night and it downloaded 11gb of Fortnite, which I think got pushed out on Sunday.

I think it only auto updates recently played games - I know I have to manually start COD updates etc as I don’t play then but have on just in case…

Oh yeah, remote install is very much a roll of the dice, too and I usually have to do it manually from the machine itself. It’s quite surprising considering it’s Microsoft. I mean, I’d think they would know all about networking and remote stuff.

I feel I should add that leaving my PS5 in rest mode (which I understand is quite economical on energy consumption) works perfectly and I never have to download anything when I turn it on.

Remote install doesn’t work in the lowest eco mode do they, pretty sure instant on is needed for all the remote stuff. PS5 uses way more in standby so you can only compare it to instant on.

It might just be me, but it feels like Microsoft have sped up the Eco mode startup on Series X. I'm sure it used to take longer than it does now.

I think they announced that in an update not that long ago, its quick enough that its not really worth using instant on esp if you have fast broadband for any updates it doesn’t catch.

To be fair, remote install hardly ever worked when I had it set to instant on mode either.

Fucking finally, I'm tired of alerting the entire neighborhood.

I'm one of the weirdos that really likes the startup sound. My subwoofer sometimes doesn't connect on startup, so the deafening BWARRRPP from the Xbox when it turns on is a great way of checking whether it's all working or not.

I got quite disappointed when they shortened it recently. They definitely need the option to make it longer again, and maybe add some bagpipes.

Is that just in the new eco mode? In the standby, my XB1 always updates everything (I'd use eco mode but it takes 400 years to boot up).

The new system update seems to have messed up the hdmi-cec power stuff, and no amount of faffing around with the many options seems to get it working properly again. It’s not impossible to work around but it’s annoying that a feature that’s supposed to make everything work together, doesn’t anymore.
