Seems like every controller is suffering with stick drift these days. My dualsense started doing it last week and I've only had the PS5 a few months.

Some of the recent 8bitdo controllers are using Hall Effect sticks that are meant to be drift-proof.

They all use the same ALPS components until they start using things like hall effect sticks they will eventually wear out as they are just carbon tracks and something that makes physical contact with the tracks.

It's odd because the triggers in an Xbox One controller use hall effect sensors but not the sticks.

Sure they could have figured out a better solution after all these years but I guess if they never wear out you can never sell people new ones. Cynic that I am. :D

I think it's grounded in fear. Big companies have fucked people over before, and it's easy to get locked into thinking that it'll happen here.

Personally, I'd say it's more likely the Series S and X will get phased out together in favour of a further leap, than focus shifting entirely to one.

True when the processor architecture moves on. So Zen 3 based machines for example. Also allow BC.

I do wonder if we are actually going to see the end of generations of machines especially from MS. They seem be focussed on GamePass and subscriptions now so bring what you have to play on.

Makes sense given they are the same architecture however I take what companies say with a pinch of salt at times.

So essentially what we have then is a Xbox One and Xbox One X scenario where everything will work on both consoles but you'll get a richer experience on the higher end machine in terms of frame rate, texture quality and resolution.

Sort of, but these S and X were developed in tandem, so in theory their plan should work out a lot better for developers this time around.

I guess we won’t find out until the end of the generation, but I’d be surprised if they started to lock S owners out of games before the next gen arrived.

Well hope so.

TBH not really that fussed if they start to lock out at some point. Kind of expect it but it will be a while - like mentioned above expect they release a Zen 3/4 based set of machines at some point down the line and then things will shift along much like they do with PCs. In the end its all x86 based architecture its whether things stop being playable on the low end hardware - even with everything dialled down to the lowest. Even then MS are investing heavily into streaming tech so still not the end of the line for the low end hardware.. depends on what experience you are happy with.

I would be all over this for my PC, but for whatever reason my existing Series controller doesn't connect to my Xbox Wireless Adapter, and my PC being such an old bastard doesn't have Bluetooth.

I suspect my adapter is too old, as it's longer than the current model.

Just get a USB Bluetooth adapter for a few quid.

When I started hearing about these Hall Effect analog sticks on stuff like the Aya Neo Pro Air Turbo II or whatever model they are on now I just assumed that they were extremely pricey and we'd only ever see them on Elite style controllers.

I saw a video about this Gulikit controller with hall effect sticks on one of the LTT YouTube channels a few weeks ago and it's about the same price as a Switch Pro Controller.

And apparently the Dreamcast was using sticks like that 20 years ago?

Yep Dreamcast used magnets and hall effect why you never got drift.

Sad that even the Xbox Elite controller uses the same ALPS sticks even at its premium price point!

Guess at least the high end PS5 pad has removable/replaceable sticks although at over £200 you'd expect them to have used some tech that doesn't suffer from drift after a while.

Shame given the Dreamcast is what over 20 years old and the tech in current pads can't even beat that. Although I expect it's by design.

Have they fixed the Bluetooth issues? I recall something about Xbox controllers being shite on PC compared to the wireless dongle but for the life of me I can't remember or find the specifics. Maybe someone here knows.

Forza Horizon 4 seems to have outlived its predecessors, in that the previous Horizon games were killed off almost exactly four years after they were released. Admittedly, it's only about a month over four years, but Microsoft announced the de-listing of those games a long time in advance, so maybe they licensed the cars and music for a longer period this time round.

it was the first Forza game to be released on game pass, that might have something to do with it

Spoiler

also it's a much better game than FH5

Exactly what I did ~£5-7 from Amazon. Works really well. Not noticed any lag anyway...

Bluetooth has a habit of really killing frame rates on some games, causes some weirdness when the batteries run low and also doesn't play too nice with the Xbox Wireless headphones for some reason.

You can still get the wireless adapter (Msoft are selling the Series pad with an adaptor for £45 currently) - worth the money in my opinion as removes all the above issues.

Warning though they are fragile as hell things - I recommend using the extra wire it comes with and hiding the little stick thing away somewhere safe where it will not get knocked - I've killed two of them so far where they've taken a gentle blow whilst sticking out of a USB port on my laptop.

Boring accounts question:

I have a series x, my nephews bought a series s. I have gamepass on my account. Can I set up my account on their Xbox, set it as the home console and install games on it so that they can play them on their own accounts?

Sorry to bump my own question but I'd love to confirm this is possible, otherwise I'll have to buy some xbox live gold cards for them.

Yea this should still work, it's called console/subscription sharing.

You may need to add his profile to your machine and set it as HIS home console but I'm not sure if that's necessary anymore (it was back, years ago, when me and my brother set it up).

The process is explained here in clear steps... https://www.thegamer.com/game-share-xbox-one-series-s-x-consoles/#:~:text=How To Set Up Game Share On An,Select 'add new' to add the other account.

👍

It's not bragged about on official Microsoft sites or help pages because, God forbid, they might miss out on a few more quid 🙄
